Heard there was a fan theory that this is an alien invasion, is that at all widespread?

It was a running joke by the writer of the comic that, when he reached issue #75, he would reveal it was an alien invasion. When he got to issue #75, there was a joke section included after the proper issue where Rick gets killed, and wakes up in an armoured suit alongside all the others who were killed, now fighting aliens

Kirkman has said he's written the end but could do 1,000 issues if demand is still there. I'm also pretty sure he said that if the show ends first it will be different from the one he has in mind for the comics as he wouldn't want to spoil it for the comic fans.

I take it I'm the only person still watching? Should/could have quit with Glenn's Not Dead but hung on in. A few intense scenes aside the second half of S6 was shit. Negan character had a good one intro but it felt like a waste to leave it till the last ten minutes.
Fuck the "who died" cliffhanger.

I'm still watching on and off. There isn't much in it for me. I don't really feel any real payoff through all these cycles of struggles.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 00:06 (eight years ago) link

Started blowing through these a week ago after they'd been piling up on the dvr and at one point thought "wait isn't there an ilx thread about this show that nobody's updated in ages?" I think I stopped expecting anything at all from it so I'm no longer disappointed. It's fine to watch for 45 minutes once a week or whatever.

I actually do kind of like that our group of protagonists found their niche and have become a crew of straight up proactive murderers.

joygoat, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 04:57 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, stopped watching. Not enough time for all the good TV, let alone a show that has so often been straight inexcusable, inexplicable garbage for several seasons. Which they then divide up into momentum killing half seasons.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 12:01 (eight years ago) link

I am going to quit unless they announce an ending. can't do it any more. being saying that since s 2 though

Better Pau Gasol (Spottie), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 16:39 (eight years ago) link

Is this still popular enough that they aren't taking a risk by making these storylines so long? Because the creators said this new phase will be long.

I hope they aren't just working for that guy for a long time, although that situation is interesting, there needs to be more.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 17:32 (eight years ago) link

this show has become entertaining for how bad it is

all the tension in any given episode comes from "will the writers fuck up the finale/resolution or will they somehow not". like in that final scene i was genuinely mostly on tenterhooks re: whether they'd actually go with the stupid, stupid cliffhanger rather than who actually died

also quite amusing on a weekly basis just to see which characters will behave in inexplicable ways entirely inconsistent with their previous portrayal (or the kind of canny survivors they're meant to be), and just how out of character the writers will take them just to clunkily move the chess pieces around the plot board

(they're still capable of some Actually Good TV on occasion, like the carol/maggie/paula episode - paula was a way more compelling "villain" than pee-pee-pants negan. irl lol when those were the first words of the most heavily built-up big bad of the entire show)

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 5 April 2016 18:11 (eight years ago) link

oh and they really have fucked up carol's latest arc. not that a breakdown is implausible on her part but they just don't bother showing things, they sort of present radically altered characters without showing us how they got there (cf gabriel's transformation from useless wuss to avenging fist of doom)

and i'm so bored of these ~ideological battles like the nonsensical killer carol v pacifist morgan. it's ridiculous to imagine anyone, at this point, would be anything other than deeply pragmatic about what needs to be done in the moment

Reflections on Season 6 (which I just finished watching.)

I liked that it wasn't so Rick-centric. He was everywhere, but everything didn't depend on him. Even though it did.

Daryl is too nice.

Glenn had me scared there for a minute.

Carl's hair took some getting used to.

Michonne is a God.

Carol is my lord and savior.

Abraham leaving Rosita...was rough.

There were too many close-ups of Morgan thinking hard.

Sasha is better than you or me. But being as strong as Sasha is something to strive for.

Eugene was entertaining but ultimately distracting.

Denise...look, I'm sorry. I enjoyed your company. And the whole: Tin woodsman, you make me feel safe, and Cowardly lion, you make me feel brave...*THWACK* was certainly memorable. I only hope you didn't exist to provide that moment.

Deanna finally became real and Spencer still needs to go.

The kids, Sam and Ron...how do you feel when you watch and people are weak and you just want them to pass swiftly into the night's cold embrace? It's a complicated feeling, isn't it? And it happens over and over.

Jesus's Jared Leto routine can get the hell out of Dodge. I don't believe in Jesus.

Hate Gregory. He's the boss in the real world you would have hated to see every morning.

With the exception of Alicia Witt and her insane accent, all the saviors are interchangeable baddies who are walking body counts.

I think this was my favorite season. From beginning to end. Which feels miraculous somehow.

So much happens that I almost completely forgot about the beginning episodes with the whole luring of the herd.

Enid is a drip. Kinda.

The truck filled with supplies going into the water...that almost killed me for some reason.

Cheese maker episode definitely top five for me. What's your name? Kill me! That's a terrible name, that's dangerous, you should really change that.

Clock tower falling...just epic. Kudos. And everything that came after...whew...love!

Crazy Alicia Witt episode with Maggie and Carol...wow. Just a stunner.

Ending: a proper cliff to hang on. This show never had a problem with that though.

In the END end: Carol 24/7. So much love for Carol.

My brother asked me last week if I'd started watching this show yet, because on paper it's totally up my alley, and I told him I hadn't yet because I'd heard that it was an occasionally frustrating experience and I wanted to wait and see if that issue was ever resolved, if there was ever any loose consensus that the show had found its groove and was worth checking out. But after reactions to the season premiere, I feel like I can pretty confidently state that I'm no longer on the fence.

Lol! going all Gaspar Noe isn't going to revive this corpse, it should have been canned at least 2 or 3 seasons ago. The problem is no matter how bad it gets - it still seems to maintain decent audiences.

it lost me earlier this year when, after building carol into one of the most formidable and satisfying characters anywhere, decided to throw it all away by making her go soft and emo for no apparent reason. now i'm only staying on to see how bad/funny it gets, hoping for the odd "clear"-grade episode to make it worthwhile.

(the glenn fake-out was crap too obv, but at the time it felt like a misstep, not a pattern of behaviour)

That verge article is funny to me. Glenn getting his face bashed was their breaking point, not a son cutting his younger sister out of his mother, or a young girl killing her sister, or the old man uselessly getting his head cut off, etc. I have friends who read the comic and have been telling me for awhile now that someone is coming who is worse than the Governor and that everything will get very dark. I'm still on board with the Walking Dead.

we put it on, the show is slow/stupid/manipulative, we lose interest and do other things. eventually we'll take a shortcut and just stop putting it on. it's not the dumb writing decisions that'll kill ratings, it's this.

action sequence occurs, action music plays to tell you it's an action sequence. clearly alive character is clearly alive on screen, talking head says "she's alive". this has become a show to watch while you're doing the ironing.

I'm still watching, though I've been in the increasingly frustrated 'not sure why I'm still watching' brigade for a while now. I've just started Season 7 and at this point I'm going to persevere pretty much whatever happens (already made it through episode 1's brutality), but if I can summon the energy or enthusiasm I have a huge amount of criticism and all-out moaning to do.

this happened. recently i tried to catch up where we left off (episode 4/5?), saw michonne walking down a deserted road (again) and immediately lost interest.

the story has been told. unless something properly major happens, like the world is cured or zombies evolve into scientists, it's just going to keep forcing a drawn-out underdog plot out of this negan/saviour thing, and presumably plant hooks into the ftwd spin-off which apparently is even worse.

it's a sad indictment when z nation starts as a frivolous cash-in and ends up being the better show.

watching a show collapse can be more fascinating than watching it at its peak, because what they're doing wrong can reveal what they once did right. takes incredible stamina though.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 19 January 2017 01:27 (seven years ago) link

I never thought this show was that good, but I have definitely enjoyed it, some times more than others. I can't pinpoint any consistent peak, but on the flip-side things have just seemed to get increasingly poor as season 6 progressed, mainly in the writing stakes to me. It seemed they were tediously belabouring dull plot points while rushing through or side-lining potentially interesting ones.

I got myself up to date on season 7 over the last few weeks and actually quite enjoyed it, especially the last two episodes where they brought multiple storylines together rather than pursuing a single arc per episode. Still a lot of problems, but hey ho. I have to admit I'm looking forward to the latter half of season 7. Any other ilxors on board still?

NWOFHM! Overlord (krakow), Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:10 (seven years ago) link

I'm still on board! Midseason premiere was great. My only complaint is AMC's not letting a show run the full season.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 13:59 (seven years ago) link

It's been a while since I've read the trade covering the current episodes, but I don't remember either the Amazons or the group at the end of this premiere. Were either of them in the comic? I remember the Negan resistance being just Alexandria, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom.

Still feels overly manipulative as this episode's toothy henchman is an over-the-top bully, slapping the truck repeatedly to get his point across, so that the viewer hopes his demise will be a highlight. Same with pretty much every male on Negan's side, and many of the females - they're slavering bullies, and lend no credence to the "but what if we'd been following Negan since the beginning and our sympathies were with him?" argument against Rick and the Alexandria folk. Negan's group is just the Stanford Prison Experiment actualized.

Glen's humanity is missed.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

when Tara was in the Amazon's camp they talked about having their men getting slaughtered so they were on the run until they settled in the current hideout

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

I haven't kept up as such but it's sometimes been on in the same room as me so I've tangentially been following. That midseason premiere was shockingly good by TWD's standards (adequate by normal standards). Characters talking to each other! With humour at times! Things happening! And Negan (worst, least menacing, most nonsensical villain to date which is saying something) kept firmly off screen.

But every single character beat is so artificial, the plot drags everyone and everyone after it rather than being driven by organic or even realistic characters and events. Like, even in this episode I assume Rosita was snippy with Sasha out of nowhere, despite making up in literally the last episode, because the writers have to clunkily set up one of them saving the other at some point.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 09:46 (seven years ago) link

Maybe it's just because of the few weeks break that I'm not used to it, but the dialogue felt terrible in this episode. It was so clunky in the non-action scenes. The one big action scene on the highway was really excellent, but I could have done with a little more throughout the episode.

I thought it would be the community that Tara met that reappeared to join the fight, but these seem folks at the end seem to be something new again. I'm also sure Ezekial will come round too, though probably only when the Saviours cross the line and do something bad to his people, sadly.

just finished season 7 on netflix. i didn't hate it but there was absolutely no reason for them not to kill the Savior people every single time they showed up for an offering. why Carl didn't kill Negan 20 times over when he was making Carl spaghetti(!!) is beyond me. why Carl didn't kill him when he was standing in front of Negan in the back of that truck and carrying a huge gun is WAY beyond me. why give up all your guns? just kill them all as soon as they drive up to your gate. it just seemed so phony that they would take so much shit for such a loooooong time. all the way to the last episode. and rick vowing to kill him in the first and last episode in the same way was beyond pathetic.

it was a little too much to overlook. it was the basis of the whole season and it didn't really make sense. they should have been out for blood from day 1.

and i know the whole numbers explanation. but who cares. just start picking them off already. just to spare us from all those long "hilarious" baseball bat monologues at the very least.
