Stanley Siegel, goofy New York TV morning-show host of the '70s who had himself psychoanalyzed on air for 10 minutes every week. I also remember him interviewing a coked-up Truman Capote, who'd just come from Studio 54.

Somehow completely missed that Brett Smiley died! Love this album so much

Really weird series of events: I posted "Va Va Va Voom" on a friend's FB wall Sunday morning, not because I knew Smiley had died (I didn't...actually, I thought he'd been dead for a few years, and that's why someone made a documentary about him), but because I'd finally burned his album onto a CD after it had sat on my hard drive for a year-plus and I thought he might like the song. Someone pointed his death out to me in a comment, then later that day news of Bowie's death.

Man, Alan Rickman was great in everything, wasn't he? Great as a villain, great as a romantic lead, great at comedy, great in kids movies.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 January 2016 14:16 (eight years ago) link

even good in Dogma

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 January 2016 15:01 (eight years ago) link

Which might be the nicest thing I've seen you say about anyone, Morbs. Gawker is shitty, but they are otm when they referred to him as the star of every movie he is in. Rickman even made the Kevin Costner Robin Hood worth watching.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 January 2016 15:05 (eight years ago) link

i actually haven't seen him in much, made biggest impact in Truly Madly Deeply; wish i'd caught him on B'way in Liaisons Dangereuses.

Dan Haggerty - Grizzly Adams

Mark G, Friday, 15 January 2016 16:23 (eight years ago) link

Might remove bookmark for a bit, just for the sake of my nerves (no disrespect to Dan Haggerty, your influence (and presumably death toll responsibility) lives on).

That's sad. Nice seeing those photos of him. I always found Grizzly Adams a singularly strange and relaxing show.

The New York-based writer and activist Bryn Kelly has died: she wrote about HIV stigma, femme culture, the labyrinth of medical bureaucracy, and the tangles of queer relationships with verve and incisive wit.
