found this one quite bewitching. teen plainsong lent an odd sorrow by just the merest touch of acid tabla/gamelan that almost mightve come off black dog 'spanners' or w/e

jacquees tape is superb. most legit r&b debut since idek when

r|t|c, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 13:08 (eight years ago) link

male r&b debut i should have said

dunno who's really exec producing him but someone knows exactly what they're doing... so many little 90s refs on the low (and not-low, lol that cover art)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 13:16 (eight years ago) link

damn this tape is really good

"know you" is great, love "pandora" too

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9pKC-wQd1A

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:11 (eight years ago) link

this tape feels like what a lot of these torey lanez type dudes are trying to do in terms of atmospheric production & melding singing and rapping but with actual musicality underpinning it

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:12 (eight years ago) link

idk yeah, maybe, but also not rly? several moments on this literally seem like baby and slim hopped out the phone booth to kidnap usher in 98. without being super retro it carries its modernity very lightly

r|t|c, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umeoz-4nBqU

i don't disagree that u shouldnt still slowly place your jeremih album in the trashcan after listening to this

r|t|c, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link

more like place your bryson tiller in the trashcan imo

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 27 January 2016 23:33 (eight years ago) link

have some ambition

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 January 2016 00:53 (eight years ago) link

without being super retro it carries its modernity very lightly

you've put it poetically as always

J0rdan S., Thursday, 28 January 2016 00:54 (eight years ago) link

have some ambition also

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 January 2016 08:42 (eight years ago) link

i mean we all agree that bryson tiller is horrible, the most horrible, and we weep bitterly for society's youth

my point was more that jeremih's, which is an album i like somewhat, suddenly sounds p dumb and juvenile next to this cos of the way it collapses any real sense of trends and times and waves by virtue of realness

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 January 2016 08:50 (eight years ago) link

I like the jeremih. It's a flop so it's hard for me to be concerned about those things you've said that I'm not sure I wrap my head around, whereas Bryson filler is selling 30k/week and becoming a legit star/phenom. Also I think jacquees' approach to vibe is gleaned from a more tiller-sequel 90s infatuation (via drake)

Um but here's a funny thing I found out, much of the jacquees is written by (and on "r&b gentleman" produced by) fortebowie, who Ethan Padgett put me onto on his 2011 year end list and who I posted on fad3r back in the day. As a solo artist he ended up roped into a rough label situation involving the dudes responsible for both Trinidad James & rich homie quan's um situations. But he wrote a bunch of the records on here

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 28 January 2016 12:30 (eight years ago) link

That's good to hear. His Gucci Mane song was pretty good!

Thought I'd pop in for more information on:

Alexandria - Promise EP

But it doesn't seem to have attracted notice. Its the sort of glitchy R&B I enjoy.

Lurkers of the world, unite! (Sanpaku), Monday, 1 February 2016 19:14 (eight years ago) link

the dreezy is a rap song

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 1 February 2016 22:50 (eight years ago) link

it's almost entirely sung and not having known who dreezy is beforehand i failed to realize she's mainly a rapper, soz

let's not pretend mainstream r&b and rap lately feature radically different production styles anyway

dyl, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 01:20 (eight years ago) link

It's an r&b song to me.
The Anderson Paak is actually a rap album, but no one is talking about it as such.

Thoughts on the anderson .paak album, please?
I think I like it a lot but I can't seem to get past his kendrick voice. It's like there's a huge kendrick between me and him.

Several xposts...

I love that Alexandria EP. Was coming here to post it, actually! Imo it builds strength as it progresses, with Pour as the pinnacle. Glitchy R&B is the best. She's on the same label as Abra too and there's a slight correlation there in vocal dreaminess to my mind.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 5 December 2016 07:04 (seven years ago) link

could you do a thread that's just "bump this when the rolling spotify playlists are updated" and just once a month by like "here is the link for X, here is the link for Y" etc and that way the people who get something from using them can still enjoy them without frustrating those who don't?

boxedjoy, Monday, 5 December 2016 07:38 (seven years ago) link

i have a plan that will undoubtedly still find a way to rile killljoys but should serve the same purpose.

but if someone else would take the wheel (or build a script, though good luck with that), i would DEARLY love to pass this off either to a committee or an individual. ILXmail me if you're feeling froggy.
