deep thoughts sounds the way i imagined all vaporwave sounding before i listened to any of it

i think most if not all of the sounds are from the same palette as the casio i had growing up

clouds, Friday, 29 January 2016 14:25 (eight years ago) link

i'll invest some more time in it :)

one month passes...

Have been listening to this most of the morning:

I don't remember being this nostalgic when I was this young.... but maybe I was and have just forgotten?

Dominique, Friday, 15 April 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

is that sampled from something?

ejemplo (crüt), Friday, 15 April 2016 16:06 (eight years ago) link

seems like it would have to be. apparently, the crowd ambiance is actually field recordings by the producer, but not sure if music is too, or he found it elsewhere. If it was actually music he made and produced, that would actually raise this stuff to something pretty cool, like the bassist stuff posted above, but with ambient filtering

Been enjoying these, not drone or ambient at all, but almost a disco-edit/filter disco take on vaporwave:

can't stop playing the bit 1:05 into the first track on Floral Shoppe where the sax solo comes in and just immediately gets all distended and out of tune. it really makes me laugh.

A good vaporwave album is ライフMIDI - VIRTUAL REALITY '97 「PLATINUM EDITION」 - can listen to the whole thing here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM7bGb4-N5A

It is a bit too on-the-nose but I do like it when these guys try to naturally freak you out rather than distort every third bar or whatever

this genre was awesome. i especially liked how 80% of the notable releases seem to come from vektroid under various aliases.

thats great

ciderpress, Saturday, 21 May 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

nice. i must point out that *ahem* it's deaths dynamic shroud.wmv :)

would like to gently rebuke treeship's point that vaporwave "was" rather than "still is". the straight up eccojam phase is over, i guess, but a healthy output of excellent ambient/illbient/ "derivative products" exists. (see dream catalogue, for ex)

and there seems to be an array of (mostly useless) EXTREME eccojams where recordings are slowed to the point where it just sounds like muffled garbage trucks

love vektroid's Sacred Tapestry release, it's a bit of a harbinger to this extreme sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3bxhofufFg

http://www.zero-books.net/books/babbling-corpse

In the age of global capitalism, vaporwave celebrates and undermines the electronic ghosts haunting the nostalgia industry.
Ours is a time of ghosts in machines, killing meaning and exposing the gaps inherent in the electronic media that pervade our lives. Vaporwave is an infant musical micro-genre that foregrounds the horror of electronic media's ability to appear - as media theorist Jeffrey Sconce terms it - "haunted."
Experimental musicians such as INTERNET CLUB and MACINTOSH PLUS manipulate Muzak and commercial music to undermine the commodification of nostalgia in the age of global capitalism while accentuating the uncanny properties of electronic music production.
Babbling Corpse reveals vaporwave's many intersections with politics, media theory, and our present fascination with uncanny, co(s)mic horror. The book is aimed at those interested in global capitalism's effect on art, musical raids on mainstream "indie" and popular music, and anyone intrigued by the changing relationship between art and commerce.

tried out dds.wmv's I'll Try Living Like This and I thought it was great. Vaporwave is oftentimes such an empty promise and there's just so much of it out there, but this album (on first listen) feels like the real deal, freaked me the hell out in a few spots (and it samples Susumu Hirasawa, and therefore automatically gets my thumbs up)

Saint Pepsi - Hit Vibes is another good one. Sounds like what Daft Punk's RAM really should've been. Something you could actually play at a party, how about that?

Thus far my favorite vape thing is "Death 2 Snitches", a collab between Nmesh and Viper the Rapper, who is (you could argue) an originator of vaporwave. I guess it's not really a collab, Nmesh just paypalled the dude 35 bucks for a verse and then tweaked the hell out of it. Wound up not finishing it because Viper turned out to be a seriously strange and dishonest dude that he didn't want to be associated with. But the demo version still totally rules:

That death's dynamic shroud.wmv album is amazing...

the Saint Pepsi sound seems to be the road taken for vaporwave artists not going full ambient (see also Android Apartment above), cf this comp from Future Society:

https://futuresocietycollective.bandcamp.com/album/single-series-volume-i

(curiously, Saint Pepsi artist himself seems to have gone into Neon Indian territory afterward...)

Dominique, Thursday, 9 June 2016 13:53 (seven years ago) link

the death's dynamic shround.wmv album does become amazing at some point halfway through track 5, and stays amazing thereafter
