i guess it's a really equal collaboration between max bemis and the drummer from mutemath, and apparently kanye...consulted on it?

it's a real disaster

omg the opening minute or so of "Attaboy" might be the funniest thing I've ever heard

this has to be one of the worst-produced albums ever

it's like a really thorough fusion of emo and alt-country which normally i'm like "no" but the songwriting here is incredible

my friend just sent me an ep from this band called blessed state. it's from last year but it's pretty much all i want out of punk music, and would prob sit as well in the rolling punk thread as it does here https://blessedstatema.bandcamp.com/album/slipstream-ep

i think at this point the Pinegrove album is my favorite of the year. it delivers so much so effortlessly.

Maybe my favorite emo-ish thing so far this year is the new album by Brightr, which I think is definitely emo despite mostly being just singing and an acoustic guitar.

I am sick that a festival like that would never exist in the UK.

Really enjoying the Brightr album. It is so wide-eyed and summery. No weak tracks either - all completely infectiously upbeat.

Trapped between this thread and the metal one, but the new Fall of Try album (which they've offered as a free download) rips. And the long break has made their vocalist 25% less grating.

I mean, they are the Yuck of 2016, but that is OK w/ me.

alpine static, Monday, 2 May 2016 00:34 (seven years ago) link

A friend of mine loves that record and pitched it to me sounding a lot like early Jimmy Eat World, but I don't hear it. Unless "early-Jimmy Eat World" is just code for 90s emo, and even as early as Static Prevails, Jimmy already sounded more ornate than most of those bands.

I should probably listen to Jimmy Eat World at some point. I only know The Middle and Lucky Denver Mint.

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 22:42 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, the Brightr album has remained a very nice listen for me. And it turns out the guy is from my hometown! I messaged him and he was very nice. There's a gig coming up this month that I'll likely go and see.

Looking forward to that FoT album though I only ever listened to the first really. I was always amazed that someone could sing and play guitar along such detached lines..

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 June 2016 22:29 (seven years ago) link

So many big releases recently! Hotelier/Tiny Moving Parts/Pup/Into It. Over It...all excellent.

I tried the Thrice album, but haven't been able to get behind them since Vheissu. I much prefer when the emphasis is post-hardcore.

Not sure if this is really the right place for this, but The World is a Beautiful Place... released a great two-track single ('Long Live Happy Birthday') that's much darker than their previous album. 'Katamari Duquette' is like a condensed Silver Mt Zion song.

boys night out are putting out a new ep! this song sounds really good http://exclaim.ca/music/article/boys_night_out-obsequiarch

anyone in this thread who hasn't heard trainwreck i really recommend it

In addition to most of Brad's list, the releases by the following are also really worth hearing:

Katie Ellen (of Chumped)
The World is a Beautiful Place...
Martha
TTNG
Brightr
PUP

(Sorry for no album names - walking)

The Joyce Manor is quite pop-punkish in parts.

I love emo but I don't really "get" JEW. (shrugs) "It Matters" is nice.

Rosentock and Joyce Manor are prob the albums I've listened to most this year in any genre

Gonna give the Look Mexico album a try, glad someone is keeping the "ridiculous song titles" aspect alive

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:42 (seven years ago) link

That Look Mexico album is wonderful!! Can't remember if I've stressed my enthusiasm for it yet or not. That's top 5 emo of the year for me and favourite find itt.

for me JEW is almost exclusively about Bleed American

Mordy, Friday, 9 December 2016 19:00 (seven years ago) link

Understandable, though I think the entire Static Prevails/Clarity/Bleed American/Futures run is essential.
