scene in observe & report was rofl too

J0rdan S., Saturday, 11 April 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i never even realized that (darryl-from-office guy) is the batter in the first episode when kenny powers has his meltdown in the majors. such a great scene too, the announcer is just subtle enough leading up to the "the nail in the coffin of a career" line for it to be hilarious

lucas pine, Monday, 13 April 2009 01:49 (fifteen years ago) link

office darryl craig robinson and danny mcbride have pretty similar awesome dumpy dude charisma and fascinating speech - theyre both fringe players in the apatow world prob too enigmatic and strange for starring roles in that broad approach - should do a buddy picture together

aw buddies^

its far out that david gordon green has fallen in w/the bizarro apatow b team - george washington to eastbound and down is some pretty strange logic

btw anyone else find the eyeball episode to be like way better than the rest

c?rvel (ice cr?m), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link

ya it's really strange that he's gone from malick guy to pineapple express comedy guy

s1ocki, Monday, 13 April 2009 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

its cool tho to see in his comedy work theres still an attention to detail and strangeness that doesnt usually come w/straight up lolz

yrs truly did a big thing in a magazine on how it ISN'T that weird coz (eg) david o russell was in on 'anchorman' and what's-his-name wrote 'i now pronounce u chuck and larry' ETC.

though obviously it is pretty weird.

except terry malick's favourite film of the 00s is... zoolander.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

'what's-his-name' = guy who did 'election'.

it's weird in the same way the altman guy who did 'magnolia' then did 'punch drunk love'; or that the guy who co-wrote 'the royal tenenbaums' then did 'starsky and hutch'.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

not to impinge upon yr important magazine work but both david o russell and alexander payne have been making funny relatively big straightforward movies their whole careers while david gordon green was down south bootstrapping weirdo shit w/non actors

c?rvel (ice cr?m), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:33 (fifteen years ago) link

'magnolia' then did 'punch drunk love'

these aren't that difft!

goole, Monday, 13 April 2009 15:37 (fifteen years ago) link

not quite true of dor, who was making documentaries about immigrant labour or whateverthefuck early on. and 'spanking the monkey' can't have been *much* bigger than 'george washington' rite?

but for purposes of the article, all three are 'sundance kids', to use the inherited discourse, with 'indie cred' but less well-known 'frat pack' connects.

xpost

other purpose of article was saying "these aren't that difft!" lol.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago) link

and shit what's her name from 'spanking' was in 'undeclared' so well there you go.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

what was weird was when pt anderson took a bunch of time off directing to write for snl!!

s1ocki, Monday, 13 April 2009 15:47 (fifteen years ago) link

i have learned from wikipedia that maya rudolph is his gf - this maybe has something to do w/it

c?rvel (ice cr?m), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

a lot of ppl ask me, "kenny powers, you're a giant star, you can get any woman, have you ever paid for sex?" the answer is yes, I have, several times in fact. and it's actually kinda cool. you can negotiate practically anything and sometimes even just kinda do stuff in the moment which you never agreed to pay for and it goes by without much argument.

this whole thing is hilare.

the intonation on 'just a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a fucking cannon' is amazing, the way he kind of slows down the last two words.

like the shape of the series, how the start of the fifth ep, following the end of the tape, sort of replays the start of the first, and now he's 'just an average man with execeptional hair'.
