Facebook neighborhood groups are the worst thing ever

Unfortunately with maps and waze, people are being rerouted all over the place avoiding traffic; it has become a disaster with traffic. So the riffraff have learned about our convenient little bypass and speed through like maniacs. I can't tell you how many people don't even slow down at half the stop signs on the whole stretch of our street. It's definitely no longer just us. I am thinking about the neighborhood, the children, the dogs and trying to hold on to a tiny bit of whatever convenience is left for us, with the taxes we pay to live in the area.
The street really needs to stay closed.

I forgot I had this one from a Google Group. (I pretty much join them all and then play the quiet game when a mod wants to know which house is mine.)

two months pass...

My wife, a public school teacher and current stay-home mom, posted an ad for her tutoring services. Among said offered services was tutoring for the city's gifted-and-talented test, which is given in Pre-K. Thread turned into a 100-post clusterfuck about (1) whether the test shoudl be given at all (2) whether tutoring is some kind of unfair advantage -- notably, most strenuously argued not by people who can't afford it, but by people whose kids "didn't prepare" and still got in, therefore they are special snowflakes, therefore anyone who prepares might just be "getting into a program they can't really handle" (3) whether all of this implied that the regular schools in our neighborhood aren't good enough (4) those damn yuppies coming to our neighborhood (which was always a middle to upper middle class neighborhood)

My grandmother belongs to a Facebook neighborhood group and according to her the only thing anybody posts about are "suspicious" (i.e. non-white) young people walking around

here's a classic i meant to post

I can't wait till it [public school being renovated] closes, very few students that walk down Berry Street towards the light rail show any respect to the people that live in *******.The school should allow children in the area [almost entirely white area] to attend the newly renovated school,Children that appreciate the school, the people that live there and the neighborhood This will keep the trouble making students out of *******.

assawoman bay (harbl), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 01:21 (seven years ago) link

there is certainly no prohibition on "children from the area" attending and the kids in this neighborhood are not that great, does it even need to be said

assawoman bay (harbl), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 01:23 (seven years ago) link

now that the police dept has joined there is a lot of "thank you for getting these criminals off our streets!"

I know that this is just an "innocent" picture that someone shared, but as a lifeguard, can you see the potential dangers here?
If you saw a child alone, looking down at the water and knowing children are curious, this child is in a dangerous situation. Then again, I guess you're not a lifeguard so you don't see the potential danger here. Even if it is just a painting, it's set up in a very dangerous situation. Sorry if you don't get it. If this was a real situation and that child fell into the water, he could drown in less than 2" of water if he fell in and couldn't stand up. Look at the height of the deck. It's about 3" . It's an accident that can and should be avoided.

I don't get it, what part is a painting?

jmm, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 01:57 (seven years ago) link

look at the top, it's not even a reflecting pond, unless those people are standing on top of water

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 02:01 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it's clearly not a pool, it's just some sprinklers on a soft surface. I've been there. But the woman was undeterred when people explained that to her. "Children can drown in 2" of water" etc.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 02:05 (seven years ago) link

I hope I'm not wrong, but I'm pretty sure the scenarios where children drown in 2" of water are where the kid is unattended and therefore winds up unconscious face down in water for more than a few seconds.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 02:06 (seven years ago) link

author is thinking of kid as unattended i think but has forgotten the pov presence -- obv if the kid fell the painter would rescue him.

The hot topic right now is continuing to mourn the already now-closed Barnes & Noble and complain about the Target soon to replace it (sort of a mini-Target or Target Express or something).

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 03:34 (seven years ago) link

Shoshanna ____ this community desperately wanted B&N to stay. Petitions were filed. Pleas made. Our B&N was a place to browse, hear stories, linger. To gather as a community.

Evan G____ [to particular poster] if you don't understand that reading and lifelong learning is essential I hope you're teaching your kid(s) more than just materialism/consumerism.

1/3 of B&N is Starbucks, Lego sets, and overpriced notebooks

At least Target has soap

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:51 (seven years ago) link

i realize this is prob the 3rd or 4th most bizarre part of the post but:

"Look at the height of the deck. It's about 3"

so the kid is what, 10 inches tall? is 3 inches too tall for a deck? what does this have to do with drowning?

dynamicinterface, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 13:06 (seven years ago) link

I guess if it's between Barnes & Noble and Target I'd take Barnes & Noble, but honestly in the age of Amazon there is no reason to go into a Barnes & Noble -- shitty selection and illiterate staff. People in my neighborhood mostly went so their toddlers could play with and fuck up the toy stock, or for free storytimes. That was my impression anyway, never a lot of people in the cash register line.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:50 (seven years ago) link

The actual problem in my neighborhood is that commercial rents on the main strip are almost inexplicably high, which favors chains.

Right now there's a group with a kickstarter project to open an indie bookstore in the neighborhood, and while I find starting a private business to be a slightly weird use of kickstarter, they've managed to raise almost $60K, and good on them I guess.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

I was halfway joking about the random stuff at B&N, but I actually was impressed by their selection of Funko Pop figures, some architectural lego-style kits, and some other random stuff they have these days. They also have a lot of vinyl records. 2016 is a hell of a time for large chain bookstores.

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

As easy as it is to laugh at them, I do sort of sympathize with people who make the categorical error of thinking the capitalist sphere is democratic, and thus "petition" for a store to stay open when it no longer can or wants to pay the asking rent.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

**shrug**

I love Barnes and Noble. Have a membership and shop there at least once a week.
