The Anthony Hamilton record is quite good. Super churchy, super Delfonics-y.

He's gonna be performing on a bill with Fantasia near me, in May. I wanna see that

Anybody feeling this Gallant album? Rich, forward-looking R&B with shades of Maxwell and Frank Ocean. Sounds v good and v well crafted, if a little over familiar

The Gallant album is gorgeous!

K-Major just did this song for some friends of mine. I think it's amazing but I'm biased of course.

was very impressed with how gorgeous the gallant album sounds, less impressed that after a few listens i can't really recall any hooks, early days yet i guess tho

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 8 April 2016 14:03 (eight years ago) link

i'm listening again and was trying to work out what the melody of the "episode" hook reminded me of and it's... "i wanna sex you up"

cher guevara (lex pretend), Saturday, 9 April 2016 09:21 (eight years ago) link

def a lotta familiar sounds on this one.

not an uncommon groove, I guess, but "bourbon" reminds me a lot of king's "the greatest."

That Toni Romiti song is impressively low wattage.

Tim F, Friday, 15 April 2016 21:03 (eight years ago) link

right yeah that's what's fascinating, like the style/delivery of the original was completely incidental to the actual underlying anthem they were attuned to and hollering out. real culture tunes like this are the very rarest pokemons

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 21:29 (eight years ago) link

another example i've long thought this about is sizzla 'give me a try' from idk 2003 (actually usually the rihanna version later maybe). like it was always just around in a way nothing to do with what we think of as ~heat~, it wasn't a minor hit that came/went/was remembered, it just became a lowkey standard that everyone knows off by heart with no paper trail whatsoever. and if you play it out now you will shell down any gathering guaranteed

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 21:41 (eight years ago) link

(current party update fwiw: there was a big grime section, lots of krept n conan love, and then some guys came round and the coven lost focus TUT TUT. standard dancehall now mostly, lots of alkaline ofc because they are real ppl and not herbs on the internet) (he says)

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 21:53 (eight years ago) link

toni romiti collab'd w/ speaker knockerz back in the day iirc, id heard that song before but it didnt stick w me at the time, there's this whole world of like, unprofessional R&B (lol) that im not privvy to

mcdonalds parking lot wave

i mean that song's understatement rested on its specificity rather than lo-fi platitude but tim's kehlani throughline is viable here i think

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 22:49 (eight years ago) link

wave is too strong obv lol, try core

just thinking about that early 00s kinda amateurish girlishness minor rise that keh tapped into, like 3lw or w/e, but maintained alongside foundational relatable rnb blues (young person "blue collar" ugh)

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 22:58 (eight years ago) link

^^^^^^^ gets it

That whole Sizzla album is fire, on incidentally. But "I've got to stop them from compelling you" is forever my jam / pick up line.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 21 April 2016 11:21 (eight years ago) link

What do the people think of Bryson tiller? Has this been discussed? Is it more than a literal mile marker for some current R&B aesthetic center? Are ppl bonding emotionally w such a Cool Guy? Wtf is the deal anyway?

everything old is new again

ulysses, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 15:04 (eight years ago) link

Thread doesn't care for him, the general public likes him a lot. I like his aesthetic and I like the singles (they're super durable) but the album was pretty one note and I don't connect with him emotionally.

Evan R, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 18:55 (eight years ago) link

the album is HUGE. he's one of the biggest new "stars" in R&B rn

even tho hes like the R&B equiv to idk john goodman's character on roseanne, the loveable schlub

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 23:38 (eight years ago) link

just some meat & potatoes extremely modern but not very self aware type ish

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 23:39 (eight years ago) link

i think i've defended him on ilx before. not sure why his on record persona is so douchey, i feel like the songs would work regardless.

anyway "don't" and "exchange" are pretty solid radio jams. i get why people think he's extremely corny but the gatekeeping around him feels like drake stans trying to keep their own turf for themselves. also do think there's a good chance he grows into his own as an artist and that if he hangs around for 5 years we'll look back at this stuff as the typically generic beginning to a career.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 April 2016 23:42 (eight years ago) link

do u believe there's something attracting ppl to him, an ineffable state of being, or is he merely the man for his time and place, an everyman if you will

this article resonated w/ me http://noisey.vice.com/blog/why-is-bryson-tiller-so-popular

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 23:44 (eight years ago) link

maybe im just bored by the aggressively relatable

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 23:44 (eight years ago) link

I love PJ so much. She's very relatable in a non-aggressive way, lol.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 28 April 2016 20:54 (eight years ago) link

what's wrong with relatable in an aggressive way?

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 April 2016 21:47 (eight years ago) link

idk. That the aggression goes into making it relatable vs. aggression itself being presented as something you can relate to?
