Heh, point taken.

I kind of think you're underselling The Top but I stopped going to bat for that album in 1993.

Fools' I mean, "Piggy in the Mirror"!

Oh I can still go to bat for The Top, I just stopped doing it!

Dan (Wailing Wall, Piggy In The Mirror, Give Me It, Bananafishbones, The Top, Th, Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Exactly! Who cares about "acid-casualty ethnocentrism" if the songs are great? I mean, "Dressing up"! "Wailing Wall"! "Bananafishbones"!

I never really understood why Dreamhouse is so often considered their masterpiece. 'Green Fingers'

The answer's right there after the full stop! And that's before I even mention Obsession (when the strings kick in after 'can you forgive me... for not understanding your ways?' - possibly the best Banshees moment ever), Cascade and the not-at-all-overrated-thank-you-very-much-Mr-Perry Melt, amongst others.

This thread about Cure reissues makes me want to listen to the Banshees more than any of the three Cure albums due out in July. I may have to have a drunken vinyl mostalgia night this weekend.

Cure in Orange is coming out on DVD first

that awesome beginning where RS takes off his wig!

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:12 (eighteen years ago) link

"Looking Glass Girl" is a weird prototype of what Cocteau Twins would become later, to a small degree. And also Loveless to a small degree as well.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 03:10 (eighteen years ago) link

"Melt!" is maybe the most boring Banshees song that isn't "The Passenger".

what ever happened to that landray person?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 08:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe she returned to her profession? You lot are seriously overrating this, it's nowhere near as good as The Top!

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Except this is wrong, but yet there is love.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:37 (eighteen years ago) link

is CURE IN ORANGE really coming out on dvd or were that a joke?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you, Ned Raggett, claim Blue Sunshine to be better than The Top? RS was talking last year of doing a second Glove album, it'd be pretty interesting although i can't see that happen in a million years

Le Baaderonixx de Benedict Canyon (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:59 (eighteen years ago) link

blue sunshine has the fine distinction of being the album I listened to the first time I dropped 4c1d

-- Onimo (gerry.wat...), March 15th, 2006.

Onimo, you are so on there. Actually used to think Dreamhouse was one of their weakest, but when lesser known tracks like 'Obsession' reveal themselves like that ... it's glorious indeed.

Very anxious to see how well they'll be able to clean this one up. The previous U.S. vinyl and CD sound pretty bad.

bkjj40a (bkjj40a), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

is CURE IN ORANGE really coming out on dvd or were that a joke?

Robert said so himself in an update a couple of months back.

Do you, Ned Raggett, claim Blue Sunshine to be better than The Top?

Both are equally splendiferous.

RS was talking last year of doing a second Glove album, it'd be pretty interesting although i can't see that happen in a million years

I remember him saying in '86 that he was working on a solo album that was going to be "the 2nd Glove album", but using just acoustic guitar, The Roland drumbox used on BS, piano and cello (!). He was going to call it the Glass Sandwich . Twenty years ago!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah yes, the nonsensical Ten Imaginary Years book. Classic RS drunk-talk in that one.

Severin also has been shepherding a reissue of 1983's "Blue Sunshine," his lone album with the Cure's Robert Smith as the Glove. The set is tentatively due in July to coincide with a new round of Cure reissues. The album's bonus material will comprise "rough mixes" of songs with Smith singing "all the guide vocals," according to Severin.

He is being curiously quiet... Maybe too busy talking about morans...

Le Baaderonixx de Benedict Canyon (baaderonixx), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha yes I was.

I actually like the vocals on Blue Sunshine so I'm not as gaga over that as one might think I would be. I really want to hear songs that were worked up during that time period that were rejected.

Dan (Yay Reissues) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I have no problem with the Blue Sunshine vocals at all either -- it'll just be nice to hear some alternates.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I am furiously ga-ga with the prospect of an RS-howled Blue Sunshine.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Excellent, I was going to hold off on the Glove but not now. All will be bought very fast.

b-b-but "Mermaids aka Torment" is the song written by Smith and Severin and then recorded by Marc Almond on his Mambas album? August, please come soon!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I fear, Marco, that we must suffer!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:45 (eighteen years ago) link

hmm, trying to answer own question - Severin's MP3.com album had a track called Tormented, which could be the instrumental of:
And All Around The Mermaids Sang (AKA Torment) (Robert Smith Vocal)

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 5 May 2006 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

this just adds to the mystery. The 83/84 era is one of my favourites: druggy, unfocused and way out of control. Sometimes excess can be good.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Yep, I have to say that over the years, that phase is the one I find most interesting. The range of the stuff coming out at that time, from Shake Dog Shake, Throw your foot or New Day, is pretty crazy.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Meantime, there's also the Siouxsie Nocturne DVD, with some fun bonuses:

"You have got to check out the Siouxsie & The Banshees Nocturne DVD. Not only does it have the original live concert with Robert, but two TV
appearances with Mr. Smith as well. Plus one of the Bonus features is a BBC TV Special that i'd probably only read about, but had never seen.
It is basically filmed LSD. Robert, Sioux, Budgie, and Severin all dressed as Alice visit Wonderland (also the name of the Banshees record label). While in Wonderland, Robert gets interrogated by surreal clowns, then there's a segway into a Creatures' video, then a Glove performance (!!) of "A Blues In Drag", Sioux tells a story, and more bizarro mini-films. It just has to be seen - a must for any Cure fan."
