feel like "sneery" is the stumbling block here; maybe come up with an alternative descriptor for yank bands

i can't think of a sneery horrible person in Metallica that's not Lars. but Lars is also the complete tool.

Lou Reed could sneer, I'll give him that... & Kid Rock possibly? though I'd be inclined to view the latter as "corny but basically okay"

Zappa was surely King Sneery though.

xp mentioning Kid Rock has made me realize that perhaps our closest cultural equivalent is the jackass? horrible person, can manage a passable sneer when the need arises, but is generally too busy braying

like my feelings aren't hurt or anything but i can't believe Nirvana didn't elicit a single "spot on" or whatever. Smear's hired-gun status in the band aside, i think it fits *perfectly*.

not sure Kurt Cobain is widely thought of as a horrible person

I reckon Cobain was probably quite nice basically.
