What do the people think of Bryson tiller? Has this been discussed? Is it more than a literal mile marker for some current R&B aesthetic center? Are ppl bonding emotionally w such a Cool Guy? Wtf is the deal anyway?

Thread doesn't care for him, the general public likes him a lot. I like his aesthetic and I like the singles (they're super durable) but the album was pretty one note and I don't connect with him emotionally.

the album is HUGE. he's one of the biggest new "stars" in R&B rn
even tho hes like the R&B equiv to idk john goodman's character on roseanne, the loveable schlub

just some meat & potatoes extremely modern but not very self aware type ish

i think i've defended him on ilx before. not sure why his on record persona is so douchey, i feel like the songs would work regardless.
anyway "don't" and "exchange" are pretty solid radio jams. i get why people think he's extremely corny but the gatekeeping around him feels like drake stans trying to keep their own turf for themselves. also do think there's a good chance he grows into his own as an artist and that if he hangs around for 5 years we'll look back at this stuff as the typically generic beginning to a career.

do u believe there's something attracting ppl to him, an ineffable state of being, or is he merely the man for his time and place, an everyman if you will

maybe im just bored by the aggressively relatable
I love PJ so much. She's very relatable in a non-aggressive way, lol.

what's wrong with relatable in an aggressive way?
― cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 April 2016 21:47 (eight years ago) link
idk. That the aggression goes into making it relatable vs. aggression itself being presented as something you can relate to?

lmao what the fuck is this comparison
― some dude, Friday, 29 April 2016 01:09 (eight years ago) link
He makes very-current R&B music that sounds good and he has some good singles. Not sure why writers have cast his popularity as this inexplicable mystery.
― Evan R, Friday, 29 April 2016 04:36 (eight years ago) link
Because the songs are boring and forgettable and derivative full of extremely general and generic lyrics?
I mean obv that's what people like, but I think it's fair to be like, weird that this is the standard bearer for r&b male rookie class

Was looking for a regular Joe ass character in popular culture broadly relatable but not especially fleshed out or, like, deep

oh haha i meant artists whose aggression is relatable, i agree w you about the type of artist whose uninteresting ~relatability is laid on so thickly, which seems to be like 75% of genuinely popular charting artists right now

― the hallouminati (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2016 13:13 (seven years ago) link
it is - but it is also very Sorry/Work/OneDance/afropop so a pinch of Dawn really shouldn't hold it back.

― human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 16 June 2016 16:53 (seven years ago) link
i like that song a lot, wasn't expecting anything else from her to be good after the atrocity that was "girl on fire"
as for why it's not taking off... at radio it seems to be struggling to find the right fit format-wise. it's making decent inroads at urban and urban ac stations, where it sounds very unique compared to the rest of their fare. meanwhile, the rhythmic stations, where i think the song would fit best sonically, are barely biting at all (maybe they're waiting for it to become a bigger r&b radio hit?). i think it's been performed on tv once or twice, but i'm not sure if it's the kind of song that'll sell a bunch off of live performances.
― dyl, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:12 (seven years ago) link
oh, and it's nowhere to be found at mainstream pop radio because of course it's not :\
― dyl, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link
I really don't get the dawn Richard comparisons, it's this super warm reggae/afropop record which sounds nothing like her colder tactile electronic ish to me

It DOES sound imho like sevyn streeter's "consistent" one of last year's most underrated songs although I hesitate to make the comparison only bc it makes "in common" seem slight
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link
The song is heavily influenced by tropical music,[1][2] as well as dancehall,[5][6][7] having a Latin beat.[1] It is also marked by clipped phrasing over a minimal beat[2] with trendy Caribbean vibes,[17] Afrobeat instrumental[18] and icy drum patterns.[19] The instrumentation also features collage of electronic beats and tropicalia-infused rhythms.[20]

How[1][2] could that[3][4][5] even go[6] wrong[8][9], huh?[12]
