Me & my friend were planning on forming a one-off covers band called Vanity Sick (we were gonna do 'Nasty Girl' and Janet Jackson's 'Nasty', because that's not obvious at all), so I can't vote for anything other than Vanity.

Wouldn't call it the greatest, but 3x2=6 has been what I've most wanted to listen to in the last week. Would love to hear Dylan's take on it.

I'm so happy to see so many people plugging 'Love, Thy Will Be Done'! I figured my vote would be lonely. I mean, I really, deeply love a lot of these songs, but that one in particular is just mega-transcendent.

P.S. I was going to make this poll happen but I got overwhelmed by the sheer number of songs that might've fit and gave up.

You completely forgot Chaka Khan's 1998 album, Prince produced it and co-wrote most of the tunes. I particularly like this single from it, which was originally recorded by the New Power Generation (with Prince on vocals) for the soundtrack of Spike Lee's Girl 6. It's a beautiful song, so I can understand why Prince and Chaka wanted to redo it as a single instead of letting it stay buried on the soundtrack of a flopped movie.

The whole Girl 6 soundtrack is well worth acquiring btw, it includes a few exclusive tracks, and a couple of Prince protege tunes ("Nasty Girl", "Screams of Passion") that are otherwise hard to find on CD.

the TLC remake of the time's get it up is the sexiest, dirtiest thing they ever recorded. they totally get the sleaziness of the song (if not quite the weird unexpected melancholy)

dangelos shes always in my hair i think is vocally brilliant, but i just hate that snare sound, and its way too restrained for me to really work like it should. it sounds canned and held ransom by questlove.

It's crazy to me that Prince and Springsteen were both so prolific that at the peak of their powers and popularity they were writing and recording entire albums for friends and idols.

Reminds me of my favorite quote about Shakespeare's genius: if it wasn't easy for him, it would have been impossible.

Who did Springsteen do that with? I am ignorant of Bruce related matters

Springsteen did a couple albums for Gary "US" Bonds in the early '80s.

He also did a couple of albums for Southside Johnny (good ones!). And obviously he wrote hit songs given to Patti Smith, Pointer Sisters, Donna Summer, etc.

I'm choosing among the Time songs: Jerk Out, Ice Cream Castles, and 777 - 9311 are all extraordinary. The hi-hat programming on 777 is jaw-dropping. And the guitar solo, jesus!

It's naturally nowhere to be found online because Prince and because SNL but if you're able to track down Sheila E.'s performance of 'A Love Bizarre' from Saturday Night Live, you're in for a real treat. Maybe one of my favorite SNL performances ever.
