otm, it transcends the ideas of cash grabs and festivals

and tbh aside from Bob and Neil i haven't seen any of them live so this would be a way to cross a few names off my concert bucket list that i was starting to think i never would, so i'd go if i was able.

I second this except that I've never seen any of these folks live. Man, if you've got the time and money, GO!

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 2 May 2016 21:54 (eight years ago) link

for some reason I'm having a flashback to an article in the local paper over the weekend about confused concertgoers showing up at the wrong time

it was a multi-show weekend where they added additional shows to match ticket sales. initially there was only an announced saturday show, then they added friday, and then a couple additional dates

a bunch of people showed up on saturday only to be told they missed their concert as they had tickets for friday. people insisted they bought tickets for the concert they showed up for. the purchasing website had the right date. the email confirmation had the right date. the tickets they'd printed and showed up with had the right date. they showed up on the wrong date.

however, the venue _anticipated this would happen_ and had set aside an entire area for people who showed up to the wrong concert night

I can only imagine what will happen at this festival

man mh I think you underestimate how much people like to make a lot of money

I know, like, who am I to talk, but wouldn't it be cool if at least a sizeable portion of the surely mind-boggling proceeds from this festival held by multi-millionaires who (let's be honest) probably don't have that much longer to enjoy their multi-millions went to a charity of some sort?

This is definitely a case of giving people what they want. But I really don't think I'd want to hang out with the people that want this.

Grabbing the top critical/financial successes of a narrow set of years that's 100% white rock dudes is so high concept that this transcends being a cynical ploy. It's like replacing the pitcher on a baseball team with a pitching machine that just spits the ball directly into the center of the strike zone at a low speed.

This is exactly how I feel about this. (Well, this plus total loathing for Paul McCartney.)

Now that you bring it up, I would totally fly out there for a Genesis reunion:

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 00:56 (eight years ago) link

like this isn't a cash grab, this is someone laying in bed at night after devising cash grab schemes all day thinking "what if I just... took all the cash at once?"

Ok so literally any show done with a professional promoter and venue, basically any show that's not like pass the hat basement punk or a benefit is done to make money why is this particular show being held to some weird standard?

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:21 (eight years ago) link

i'd ask the music publications that create "best albums/artists ever" lists, year after year, and have put these artists on them for decades!

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:37 (eight years ago) link

searched google for "rolling stone best artists"

numbers 4, 2, and 1 were: the rolling stones, bob dylan, and the beatles. they booked the first two, and got the only touring member of the third

the high concept is literally "can we book the most popular/best artists ever"

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:43 (eight years ago) link

i mean...festival promoters are always trying to come up with the best festival lineup they possibly can, and for a certain kind of consumer, these guys succeeded. that's...bad?

some dude, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:48 (eight years ago) link

Revenge against the Boomers, I guess. But it only guarantees the same treatment 30 years down the road when Washed Out plays the future Oldchella.

larry appleton, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:50 (eight years ago) link

did you ever see the invader zim cartoon episode where he has tryouts for his "best friend"?

i mean, a bunch of really great artists, no buffer, sounds like complete overload! it's cool they're doing long sets, time to wander around, probably some breaks between acts

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:53 (eight years ago) link

not bad as much as a possible misunderstanding, or different interpretation, of what is good

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 01:55 (eight years ago) link

like when I get one of those prix fixe menus where you have your choice of several appetizers, a couple entrees, and dessert and like an idiot I choose the most fatty, savory option for all courses, wash it down with red wine, and feel like i'm gonna vom

It's the Roll 'Em Out Before They Die Tour. A little depressing, I guess, but that's life. I'd be disappointed if they didn't pass out LSD in the so people could embrace their mortality Huxley style.

I'm interested in what the Millennial version of Oldchella would look like, if society still exists in its current form at that point.

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 02:32 (eight years ago) link

All of them are too afraid to invite Fogerty because his current live show would put them to shame (perhaps even Neil)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 02:40 (eight years ago) link

As soon as Frey was gone, the promoters were like "Thank God - we can finally do this show without those assholes."

all of these artists have made great music. you just need to ignore the boomer industrial complex/critical hagiography establishment.

Treeship, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 04:18 (eight years ago) link

they've all made bad music too, which adds to their charm.

Treeship, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 04:18 (eight years ago) link

i'm kinda dying to know who turned them down. zeppelin? springsteen? the kinks? (i wish!)

Stevie Wonder.

the rolling stones in 30 years? i could see that if they underwent experimental gene therapy or something. knowing how the world goes, we'd experience some disaster where the technology is lost, and the rolling stones are the only ones granted immortality. so each successive generation will get to watch them at their own oldchella. then one day thousands of years in the future when the earth is dying, each rolling stone will fly off to space to colonize their own planet, including Android Brian Jones and his mysterious Planet X. each millennium the 5 rolling stones take off from their planetary kingdoms to reunite on earth to stage the biggest show in the galaxy. that's how i see it working out, at least.

How will they determine who opens? They should just all play at once.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 13:29 (eight years ago) link

the dead are supposed to have played their final final show right?

anyway, think the boomers will b p disappointed w/ modern times Dylan since it's not much like what the teaser/nostalgia might have them thinking

seen him once in a huge venue, doesn't suit his style well imo

This might be the case if Fogerty's drummer was absolutely anybody other than Kenny Aaronoff (including, but not limited to, paramecium).

He's not ham-fisted; he's pig-roasting-on-a-spit-with-an-apple-in-its-mouth-fisted.

3 day pass General Admission: $399.
Reserved floor/grandstand: $699-$1,599.
Standing pit: $1,599.

haw, "standing pit," sounds great.
$399 really isn't *terrible* -- doesn't it cost that much to see the stones on their own these days? still way too rich for my blood.

tylerw, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 14:48 (eight years ago) link

pit is gonna be a madhouse of angry rich people throwing elbows to get closer to the stage, very american psycho workout chic

boomers have been known to be p disappointed w/modern times neil as well (meaning anytime neil's played an electric gtr in the past 30-ish years)

yeah if dylan sticks with his current set it'll be more than half material from the last 15 years ... which will be unique for this kind of thing.
