OMG A BIG ROCK CONCERT I'M GONNA DIE OF ANGST

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 02:32 (eight years ago) link

All of them are too afraid to invite Fogerty because his current live show would put them to shame (perhaps even Neil)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 02:40 (eight years ago) link

As soon as Frey was gone, the promoters were like "Thank God - we can finally do this show without those assholes."

... (Eazy), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 03:38 (eight years ago) link

I'm interested in what the Millennial version of Oldchella would look like, if society still exists in its current form at that point.

all of these artists have made great music. you just need to ignore the boomer industrial complex/critical hagiography establishment.

Treeship, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 04:18 (eight years ago) link

they've all made bad music too, which adds to their charm.

Treeship, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 04:18 (eight years ago) link

i'm kinda dying to know who turned them down. zeppelin? springsteen? the kinks? (i wish!)

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 04:23 (eight years ago) link

Stevie Wonder.

the rolling stones in 30 years? i could see that if they underwent experimental gene therapy or something. knowing how the world goes, we'd experience some disaster where the technology is lost, and the rolling stones are the only ones granted immortality. so each successive generation will get to watch them at their own oldchella. then one day thousands of years in the future when the earth is dying, each rolling stone will fly off to space to colonize their own planet, including Android Brian Jones and his mysterious Planet X. each millennium the 5 rolling stones take off from their planetary kingdoms to reunite on earth to stage the biggest show in the galaxy. that's how i see it working out, at least.

like this isn't a cash grab, this is someone laying in bed at night after devising cash grab schemes all day thinking "what if I just... took all the cash at once?"

this gave me a really great lol, thank you

tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 12:31 (eight years ago) link

How will they determine who opens? They should just all play at once.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 13:29 (eight years ago) link

the dead are supposed to have played their final final show right?

anyway, think the boomers will b p disappointed w/ modern times Dylan since it's not much like what the teaser/nostalgia might have them thinking

https://www.facebook.com/bobdylan/videos/10156802076230696/

seen him once in a huge venue, doesn't suit his style well imo

Indeed they do.

This might be the case if Fogerty's drummer was absolutely anybody other than Kenny Aaronoff (including, but not limited to, paramecium).

He's not ham-fisted; he's pig-roasting-on-a-spit-with-an-apple-in-its-mouth-fisted.

haw, "standing pit," sounds great.
$399 really isn't *terrible* -- doesn't it cost that much to see the stones on their own these days? still way too rich for my blood.

tylerw, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 14:48 (eight years ago) link

pit is gonna be a madhouse of angry rich people throwing elbows to get closer to the stage, very american psycho workout chic

ulysses, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 14:50 (eight years ago) link

seriously, security will maybe wallow in if somebody goes underfoot but there are gonna be a lot of free for all alpha males NEEDING to be up close to get that guitar pick

Average daily high temp in Indio in October is 92F. There are gonna be a lot of 65+ people with heatstroke.

God these old farts make me nauseous. I'ts such a sellout, not like all the acts who play coachella these days, they're doing it for the music man!!!

the boomers will b p disappointed w/ modern times Dylan

boomers have been known to be p disappointed w/modern times neil as well (meaning anytime neil's played an electric gtr in the past 30-ish years)

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 15:02 (eight years ago) link

yeah if dylan sticks with his current set it'll be more than half material from the last 15 years ... which will be unique for this kind of thing.

tylerw, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 15:03 (eight years ago) link

I'm just imagining Bono and Sting sitting their folornly waiting for their respective phones to ring.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 15:12 (eight years ago) link

they'll be doing it in 5 years (or less), mark my words.

tylerw, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 15:15 (eight years ago) link

they should hire the Hell's Angels as security

ejemplo (crüt), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 15:20 (eight years ago) link

the fact that this is a seated event kinda undercuts the primary (sole?) appeal of this kinda festival -- which is that, if you get there early and really commit, you can generally get up-close to multiple acts for which up-close tix would ordinarily be prohibitively expensive.

but i also understand why it's seated, given what's likely to be the average age of the attendees.

last show neil played down by the river for 35 minutes

rockpalast '82 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 15:36 (eight years ago) link

saw him last year at a somewhat star-studded willie nelson tribute. he was the only one to play multiple songs and the only one to refuse to play with the house band. (i like to think this was in part due to his wonderfully uncooperative nature and not solely because of the nelson family connection.)

promise of the real a great backing band, though.

this fest is also good cuz it's the last chance a lot of gen xers will get to rail against old people, enjoy the moment

OK, now there's a poster (apologies if it's huge):

http://www.billboard.com/files/media/rolling-stones-coachella-poster-2016-billboard-650-1548.jpg

Also, from the Billboard piece: "The campgrounds will be open, but heavy use is not expected, other than cabanas and 'glamping' similar to the top end VIP at Coachella; like Coachella, VIP packages and various shuttles and travel will be overseen by CID Entertainment, doing business as Valley Music Travel. Other enhanced experiences will include travel, dining, hotel/resort, and golf packages (there are even discussions of a tournament attached to the event). A release announcing the event promises 'an all-star lineup of world renowned chefs and 40 of the best restaurants from Los Angeles to New York.'"

Pretty sure $399 at the Stones at least gets you a seat.

the location is kind of a red herring -- it's the desert, but unless it's windy, you'd only notice that due to the dryness. the absurdity of the coachella festival aside, if it's still like it was in 2008, it's an amazing venue. the polo field is immaculately fertilized and trimmed grass and you can very easily go barefoot. virtually no humidity, and avoiding the middle of the summer, means that it's hot during the day but in open air it's much, much better than any outdoor festival with 90 degree heat would be in the midwest. and after the sun goes down, it's in the 60s/70s (much like the heydays of this festival's attractions).

camping is great at those temperatures, and it's within commuting distance of palm springs, and even taking amtrak from los angeles is less than an hour iirc

Rolling Stones came last year and mostly filled up the Citrus Bowl. a whole buncha locals were like "omg who would pay to see THIS" and posted cherry-picked photos of a frail looking Keith Richards. lot of my friends (ranging from like 20s to Medicare-age) went and said it was great, albeit setlist was predictable, but still - if you've never seen em, who cares?

I mean the whole 'who wants to see them, they're old' applies more to former golden-throated singers whose voices have been ravaged by the cruel hands of Father Time, but Mick Jagger ain't exactly got that problem, and unless Keith Richards is decrepit enough to have handlers on stage move his hands into the correct chord positions, why not? kinda wished I'd gone.

the Who, on the other hand, Daltrey has sounded bad for decades and I could see being put off dude trying to croak out "Lurv, reign o'er maaaaaaay"

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 19:26 (eight years ago) link

Neil's voice is still in pretty good shape. Lost some of it's super-high upper register on stuff like After the Gold Rush but that's about it.

so this is probably the single most unpunk thing in music history right

it's funny how a similar thing w all the OG punk bands is basically impossible cuz too many people are dead (Ramones, Joe Strummer, etc.)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 19:35 (eight years ago) link

Daltrey sounded very iffy for most of the '00s, but this year and last, he's sounding great (though, tbf, the climactic "Won't Get Fooled Again" scream is on tape). I last saw them in March, and he was hitting notes he couldn't hit in 1989.

There is one reason to not miss the Who: Townshend's playing. He's been exploring this insane Coltrane-esque fingerpicking thing since the late '90s. The setlist won't surprise you, but his playing will.

doesn't McCartney sing all of his songs in their original key?
