That's one of Marvel's big things, that it's not glittering Metropolis or cloud-scudded Gotham, it's New York (which has a slight magical sheen anyway to a lot of their audience a) because it's where Marvel happens and b) anyway)

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 14 May 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

thought this was ok. disappointed that they still haven't pulled the trigger on miles morales - don't get what they're waiting for.

Mordy, Saturday, 14 May 2016 17:40 (seven years ago) link

they haven't had Spider-Man at all until this movie. when could they have done Miles Morales?

glandular lansbury (sic), Sunday, 15 May 2016 00:18 (seven years ago) link

there was some dumb argument about whether Sony has the rights to Spider-Man or just Peter Parker as Spider-Man

also people who think Sony would reboot using Miles instead of Peter yet again

μpright mammal (mh), Sunday, 15 May 2016 00:29 (seven years ago) link

This was solid, better than AoU.

Crazy Eddie & Jesus the Kid (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 15 May 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link

Its international total has hit $645 million, making “Civil War” the fourth-highest -grossing superhero movie of all time behind “Avengers: Age of Ultron” ($946 million), “The Avengers” ($895 million) and “Iron Man 3” ($806 million).

bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Sunday, 15 May 2016 20:55 (seven years ago) link

apparently if you pile all 13 Marvel Studios pictures together they've now made over $10B

bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Sunday, 15 May 2016 20:56 (seven years ago) link

Yet somehow Disney didn't meet quarterly expectations. How?! These, Pixar, Star Wars ...

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 15 May 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

Expectations were too high, though not by much, and the in-house toy and cable parts of the business didn't do as well.

bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Sunday, 15 May 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

the bar for success is generally set right above attainable levels when shareholders are involved

μpright mammal (mh), Sunday, 15 May 2016 21:40 (seven years ago) link

So it's already beat Superman v. Batman's total worldwide gross, and it's just about caught up to SvB's total US gross after nine days in release. Nice.

Peanut Duck (Old Lunch), Monday, 16 May 2016 03:09 (seven years ago) link

disney owns espn, which until recently was a huge profit driver for them, about $15 billion a year iirc. only not cord cutting has become normalized to have an impact and espn's revenues have started to drop, right when they paid ridiculous af sums for various tv rights. disney's media properties (networks) have been responsible for 50% of their profits and while abc and disney channel and abc family and a&e are nice, espn is obv the rainmaker there. or was. when the thing that was responsible for around 50% of yr profits suddenly might start losing money it's a problem.

This doesn't really work as a standalone film does it? I've seen (I think) every single one of the preceding movies, and have a fair working knowledge of most of the characters from the comics, but I was scratching my head trying to figure out what was going on in parts. If I'd watched all the other films last week I would've been fine. Also they weren't very good at deliniating the different sides or making the stakes that clear or compelling, also they chickened out of giving Cap and Iron Man a genuine and convincing ideological greivance really, basically everyone was being big babies (maybe the point?)

BUT it was amazingly enjoyable nontheless, and the big fight scene was, I thought, INCREDIBLE. The most accurate screen recreation of a comic book superhero fight in both spirit and visuals I've seen. And the new Spidey is totally on the money and totally stole the show. Blows the Maguire and Garfield versions out of the water with a mere cameo. Black Panther was great as well.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Saturday, 21 May 2016 12:11 (seven years ago) link

What do you reckon you were missing beyond "These cities got trashed"?

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 21 May 2016 12:19 (seven years ago) link

The fact that nobody made an argument that the world sould havd fucking ended each time without intervention was kind of a plot canyon nest pas

But again, plot, i mean it's irrelevant however much ppl try to expound on thematic strengths or intricacy and consistency of internal motivations and does it speak to our times these movies work because the gorgeous ppl in the tight shiny outfits did cool things while saying cool things.

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Saturday, 21 May 2016 12:29 (seven years ago) link

this was good, highly entertaining, but yeah all these movies are starting to run together to me, quality-wise at least.

the conflict was more believable than SvB (a low bar, i know) but still, yeah, kinda confused about the ultimatum presented to the superheroes. either sign with the UN or.... stop saving the world?

honestly everyone should have just flown to a tropical island to wait it out until the next alien invasion.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 21 May 2016 16:42 (seven years ago) link

Was that alien invasion being at least partially blamed on the team?
Looked a bit like since they happened to be there the damage was being put down to them & I can't remember the set up in the original film. It was really localised wasn't it. But military high command should have known.
Has there been some explanation given to the population mentioned elsewhere? Cos I think I've heard something & can't think where.

Stevolende, Saturday, 21 May 2016 17:10 (seven years ago) link

more importantly Stark should have remembered that he personally had to save NYC from being nuked by committee.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 21 May 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

& the "or else" was go sit in this prison in the middle of the ocean that we designed for supervillain containment

El Tomboto, Saturday, 21 May 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

good. espn's stranglehold on sports broadcasting needs to be broken. back when I grew up a child could kick a ball in the street with curt gowdy and howard cosell for free. now you can't watch a little girl play beach volleyball for less than an arm and a leg.

two weeks pass...

yay I'm finally seeing this movie tonight so I can go back and read this thread

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Friday, 10 June 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

It's quite a ride! I'd say the third best Marvel movie, after Guardians of the Galaxy and the first Thor.

Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2016 17:44 (seven years ago) link

Ugh I still haven't seen it. My daughter was born on opening night. Inconsiderate of her really.

The movie or the thread

El Tomboto, Saturday, 11 June 2016 13:28 (seven years ago) link

lol

Just finished reading the thread. I'm not sure what the people complaining were looking for from this movie. I thought every character was fantastically portrayed and that everyone's positions made sense based on who they were. I also thought this reimagining of Zemo was a much more compelling figure than the ranting maniac from the comic books. Kind of bummed that Crossbones blew himself up, makes it much less likely that a Thunderbolts movie will happen.

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Saturday, 11 June 2016 15:48 (seven years ago) link

But if they'll do a Thunderbolts movie, presumably Zemo will still be their leader, and the movie Zemo would never have a HYDRA follower in his team anyway.

Tuomas, Sunday, 12 June 2016 13:20 (seven years ago) link

Sure but Crossbones was in the "felons controlled by Luke Cage in a thinly-veiled version of Suicide Squad" iteration, not the Zemo iteration

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Sunday, 12 June 2016 14:57 (seven years ago) link

Think the actor who played Crossbones has suggested his character might return, not that it seems all that plausible.

albvivertine, Sunday, 12 June 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

one year passes...

i'm sure everyone's forgotten this already but it was very convenient that it happened to be bucky who killed stark's parents and it happened to be captured on cctv which happened to make it back to siberia (i think??) and it happened to be only stark and cap am and bucky who turned up there (plus black panther who happened to redact himself). i know, forget it jake it's comic book town.

lana del boy (ledge), Friday, 19 January 2018 14:25 (six years ago) link

It seemed pretty inconvenient if I'm honest it made it very tricky to resolve the issue without conflict

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Friday, 19 January 2018 14:26 (six years ago) link

yeah i would have been happier without the extra 20 minutes of 'enhanced' white dudes slugging each other around. which maybe begs the question why i bother watching these things.

lana del boy (ledge), Friday, 19 January 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

I thought this movie was a humourless clusterfuck (with good Spider-Man bits) and not sure why everyone went crazy over it. Maybe it just got overpraised in the wake of BatVSupes showing just how bad one of these movies *could* get.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 19 January 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link

well the real civil war was a humorless clusterfuck so

El Tomboto, Friday, 19 January 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

Huh, I would've sworn this was before BvS.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 19 January 2018 14:50 (six years ago) link

funnily enough i rescreened this again recently and it's fine - didn't like it as much as i did upthread but it does a good job of keeping a lot of characters moving and it's got some cool moments

ledge's point about enhanced folks slugging each other at the climax is fair but i still much prefer the small, personal nature of the conflict to yet another 'gotta close the portal in the sky!' finale

winter soldier is a hard act to follow tbf

grim-n-gritty hooty reboot (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 19 January 2018 14:52 (six years ago) link

oh and the fight choreography is fkn rad, even if there is a bit too much of it

grim-n-gritty hooty reboot (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 19 January 2018 14:52 (six years ago) link

i didn't love it but it's still fine. i don't really get why tony and steve *have* to fight at the end, it's all too idiot plot

but iron man 2 is still the only flat-out bad marvel movie, i think.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 19 January 2018 15:23 (six years ago) link

Dr Strange. Awful.

Didn't think winter soldier was any better than avg for marvel tho

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Friday, 19 January 2018 15:34 (six years ago) link

xps no the REAL Civil War was the friends we made along the way

Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Friday, 19 January 2018 15:39 (six years ago) link

Winter Soldier was basically Marvel's Bourne movie.

russo era marvel makes it obvious that punching is the only way to solve any problem.

(punching was also the solution in the whedon era, but he managed to hide it well.)
