The pay-to-speed-up thing has always been there, I think. It's a fairly minimal fee and the speed only seems to throttle when you're really doing it loads (someone else said they thought it was related to traffic on the site in general but for me it always seems to be full-speed for the first one in a day and then chokes on the fourth or so, that could just be coincidence though).

ah, thanks for the tip! I wonder if these sites all use the same algorithm...

same source photo, same filter. I like the higher resolution on the dreamscope collage, but the deepart one is seamless whereas the dreamscope one is way too busy and artifact-ridden for my taste.

yeah, I've run the same photo/filter combos more than once and gotten slightly different results.

I've been reading this article about the history of neural networks. apparently deepart.io and ostagram.ru use a more recent open-source algorithm developed by German researcher Leon Gatys, who isn't affiliated with Google's DeepDream project. the Dreamscope app (which everyone was using itt a year ago) originally used Google code, but I'm not sure if it still does. it doesn't seem like any of these apps has customization settings at the moment, but I'm sure that will come eventually.
