new zo! album is quite good, quiet storm/'80s smooth r&b vibe with a rotating cast of guest vocalists incl. phonte

usher's new single with young thug is not good :(

leans a little too hard on the master p references too

it's cool but sounds like it can't decide if it wants to be a rap or r&b song

solitary posts that effortlessly summarize the spirit of 2016 R&B

Ant thoughts on why A. Keys' In Common doesn't seem to be taking off (yet)? It's pretty awesome!

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 16 June 2016 12:59 (seven years ago) link

it's very dawn richard

the hallouminati (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2016 13:13 (seven years ago) link

it is - but it is also very Sorry/Work/OneDance/afropop so a pinch of Dawn really shouldn't hold it back.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 16 June 2016 13:34 (seven years ago) link

really like it but it's a bit anaemic

||||||||, Thursday, 16 June 2016 16:52 (seven years ago) link

I'm happy for every drop of anemic Alicia Keys we get.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 16 June 2016 16:53 (seven years ago) link

i like that song a lot, wasn't expecting anything else from her to be good after the atrocity that was "girl on fire"

as for why it's not taking off... at radio it seems to be struggling to find the right fit format-wise. it's making decent inroads at urban and urban ac stations, where it sounds very unique compared to the rest of their fare. meanwhile, the rhythmic stations, where i think the song would fit best sonically, are barely biting at all (maybe they're waiting for it to become a bigger r&b radio hit?). i think it's been performed on tv once or twice, but i'm not sure if it's the kind of song that'll sell a bunch off of live performances.

dyl, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:12 (seven years ago) link

oh, and it's nowhere to be found at mainstream pop radio because of course it's not :\

dyl, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link

I really don't get the dawn Richard comparisons, it's this super warm reggae/afropop record which sounds nothing like her colder tactile electronic ish to me

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

It DOES sound imho like sevyn streeter's "consistent" one of last year's most underrated songs although I hesitate to make the comparison only bc it makes "in common" seem slight

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

The song is heavily influenced by tropical music,[1][2] as well as dancehall,[5][6][7] having a Latin beat.[1] It is also marked by clipped phrasing over a minimal beat[2] with trendy Caribbean vibes,[17] Afrobeat instrumental[18] and icy drum patterns.[19] The instrumentation also features collage of electronic beats and tropicalia-infused rhythms.[20]

r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2016 14:06 (seven years ago) link

How[1][2] could that[3][4][5] even go[6] wrong[8][9], huh?[12]

I'm feeling June's Diary, the band Kelly Rowland put together on Chasing Destiny. I'd post YouTubes but I'm on a train.

"LANCE" is an awesome record

I am not that into the k michelle but do love tweet and King and maxwell

After the influence of a few friends I'm coming around on the DVSN

I'm more looking for new artists or singles a little off the beaten path tho, like tweet and Maxwell have been making music for 1-2 decades

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 7 July 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link

the dvsn was not as bad as i thought initially but i still find it pretty ponderous (prob the point)
