She’s a strikingly eloquent teen, who looks and sounds much older than her years, lauded as the voice of her generation. To western liberals, she represents the archetypal poor brown girl saved from barbarians, the perfect symbol of oppressed exoticism. Even her name sounds like an ululation, though it gives plenty of people trouble: poor Naomi Campbell fell victim to autocorrect and called her “Malaria” in a recent congratulatory tweet. But, and I’m sorry to say this, she doesn’t half bang on.

Malala is perhaps the only 17-year-old in the world who doesn’t have a mobile phone. “I think it’s important that we use social media, but for a good purpose,” she recently told the New York Times. “For instance, it’s good to take a selfie to say hey what’s up and those things, but I think it’s also important that we use it for the good purpose of highlighting the issues that children all over the world are facing.” Well, excuse me for tweeting!

Yiannopoulos's favorite political tactic is trolling. In the alt-right worldview, nice, normal white dudes are told they're racist and sexist by "social justice warriors." In retaliation, they've adopted a strategy Yiannopoulos calls "double down, don't back down." He explains: "If someone calls you an anti-Semite, you go to their page and put up swastikas." Then those he's offended, he says, use this prank as false proof of the original accusation of anti-Semitism to gain power through sympathy. Yiannopoulos's mob of trolls then mock them for taking the prank seriously and whining. Nobody's actions can be taken at face value. "Everybody is trolling everybody, and nobody knows who is winning," he says. And at least his side is enjoying it.

Professional right-wing troll Milo Yiannopoulos has declared himself no longer homosexual. In an interview with the right-wing LifeSite, Yiannopoulos claims he is “ex-gay” and will direct his future endeavors to St. Joseph: “I treat it like an addiction. You never stop being an alcoholic... I hope people will support and pray for me, if for no other reason than they share my delight at the prospect of Milo Yiannopoulos furiously and indignantly railing against homosexuals for sins of the flesh.” He announced a new vocation as well, a dedication to the discredited and widely banned practice of forcibly subduing homosexuality: “Over the next decade, I would like to help rehabilitate what the media calls ‘conversion therapy.’” It is unclear whether Yiannopoulos remains legally married: “The guy I live with has been demoted to housemate.” And he took some time during the interview to indulge in transphobia as well, claiming “trannies are demonic.”

Describing what he called a “Christian renaissance” occurring in the US, Yiannopoulos said fundraising for the effort was taking off considerably, citing a backlash against establishment LGBTQ political activism.

“This has been the easiest thing to raise money for that I’ve ever done. There is an enormous demand for this among people who believe they’ve been led astray by — it sounds silly to call it this — but you know, the gay establishment,” Yiannopoulos said.

He clarifies his coming out as "ex-gay" as trolling:

“‘Ex-gay’ is a silly expression but it has the virtues of slotting into a print headline neatly and absolutely enraging the opposition. Celibacy is a modest and achievable middle term goal; naturally, in the end, my aspiration would be to take it all the way,” he said.

“Conversion therapy has a terrible reputation for precisely the reason that a lot of other things associated closely with either the religious right or the nationalist right have a terrible reputation,” Milo alleged, “Because they’ve been lied about consistently and strategically for decades.

“We don’t know very much for sure, we have a relatively clear idea about a lot of it, but here’s the thing: since the eighties and nineties, we haven’t really been able to do any research that doesn’t conform to the propaganda because you cannot get funding for anything other than finding the gay gene,” he said. “So we’re operating in a gray area.”
