99% no, 1% "The Sunny O's" (h/t trishyb)
― pleas to Nietzsche (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 June 2016 13:58 (seven years ago) link
It's pronounced 'Sunny D' iirc.

"Did you hear about the Scott O))) collaboration?"
"What, like a collaboration of Scotts?"
You need to say the forbidden vowel in this case.

I just say sunn but then I also call him stephen malley
― oh, amazonaws (wins), Monday, 20 June 2016 00:04 (seven years ago) link
It ain't a "vowel thing", it's a symbol/icon/graphic, like the Nike swoosh

Ha, I have a friend called that who is also a reasonably successful musician and I am constantly imagining the Malley/O'Malley supergroup.
― emil.y, Monday, 20 June 2016 01:23 (seven years ago) link
I say the O most of the time
― queen elseq of ærendelle (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 June 2016 01:34 (seven years ago) link
I don't pronounce it, but I kind of breathe it silently through my sinuses, like the 4th sound in the "Om"
― hardcore dilettante, Monday, 20 June 2016 02:13 (seven years ago) link
i recently found out the word 'bonafides' isn't pronounced the same way as the word 'bonafide' with an added s but i think i'll still continue to say it the wrong way because i think everyone else assumes it's pronounced that way

Yeah, that's one where saying it right makes you sound fussy and elitist. Plus "bo-na-fieds" is more fun.
I say "Sun" but will resort quickly to "Sun-O" if I can tell someone doesn't know who I'm talking about.

Yeah, there's def things you sound kind of like a dick for pronouncing correctly, like "phò"
― queen elseq of ærendelle (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 June 2016 03:58 (seven years ago) link
"Sunno" definitely works for lowering the pretention factor when talking about a brilliant but kind of absurd band
― queen elseq of ærendelle (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 June 2016 04:00 (seven years ago) link
Also, when I started listening to them, there was a major label band called "The Sun"
― queen elseq of ærendelle (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 20 June 2016 04:01 (seven years ago) link
Well, for one thing, it's not an "O". https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/b4/f2/1f/b4f21f63e758d1d837ceccf9f7195f81.jpg

That's not a band
― Mark G, Monday, 20 June 2016 06:42 (seven years ago) link
It's the source of their name though. Not written with an "O" on their sleeves either. http://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/7/6/4/1764.jpg

Sunn only. With weight on the nns to help differentiate from Shiny McYelloworb.
― lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 20 June 2016 07:14 (seven years ago) link
It's the source of their name though
Via the Earth album 'Sunn Amps & Smashed Guitars", which itself derived from a mishearing of the Be Bop Deluxe lyric "Sad amps and smashed guitars." Or so I have read.
So I think 'Sadd O)))' is probably the correct pronunciation.
― Noel Emits, Monday, 20 June 2016 09:02 (seven years ago) link
by appending it to the name they are definitely tempting you to pronounce the symbol, which I think is, like those gouranga things people leave on bridges, some sort of invocation of the cosmic they want to trick you into for you own good. the lack of a definitive answer makes having a go more appealing, this being my fav approach so far itt:
maybe you're supposed to say "sun" and then close your eyes and look into infinity
