my own preference is that in an eleventh hour surprise jaime leads the lannister army charging in, to ramsay's delight and jon's chagrin, but in the end they actually charge into and decimate the bolton army bc jaime has found his heart or something thanks to brienne or whatever. i suspect that would be too awesome to actually happen though.

nomar, Thursday, 16 June 2016 19:59 (seven years ago) link

nah, jaime goes back to kings landing, and cersei has killed their last remaining child in a fire, and she dies too, and he has a change of heart, and then Arya kills him

I don't understand why the Freys were so cool with Ramsay killing Walda, btw. Perhaps they'll be helping Snow?

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link

Considering the build-up to this battle has been stretched out over half a season, it's remarkable so little we know about it.

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:05 (seven years ago) link

think the house words of House Frey are "¯\(°_o)/¯ I'll get another one"

This is also presumably why Walder would have been fine with Jaime catapulting his only attractive daughter's baby son into a castle to fuck with Edmure

In the books there are so many Frey heirs that Walder doesn't care if a few of them get killed, and the heirs are happy to have their ranks thinned a little to improve their own standing, maybe something similar with Walda?

Or maybe the writers haven't thought things through, hmmm.

Interpretive Jigglypuffery (Leee), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

there hasn't been an official Frey response re: the murder. They're preoccupied with gaining control over Riverrun.

sarahell, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

They can't get HBO where they live. Waiting for DVDs.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

they have ramsey killfiled

sarahell, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

I thought Frey was very serious about the marriages and children with other prestigious houses.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:13 (seven years ago) link

It's not just that she's a Frey, but the half-Frey baby was heir to the warden of the north. It was a pretty great thing for that house.

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

I did wonder whether Edmure might respond to Jaime's threats by being kind of like "I have never actually met my son because I've been imprisoned since the night of his conception, and in retrospect I feel somewhat ambivalent about the way my marriage was actually a sham to facilitate the murder of my family"

but he seemed pretty shaken, so job done I guess

tbf jamie gave him a p comfortable out compared to his current accommodations too

lag∞n, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link

i expected a bit more out of a character played by Tobias Menzies ... sigh

sarahell, Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link

I thought the Frey baby was "poisoned by our enemies".

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 16 June 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

think cersei might kill jamie tbh

People are really mad about the Arya storyline

Arya is my favourite character. She has been away from the main action for at least 2 seasons more than she should have been but it was obvious a long time ago that she was going to come back north so the haters can gtf afaic.

For bodies we are ready to build pyramids (wtev), Friday, 17 June 2016 22:07 (seven years ago) link

that's nuts. the more rory mccann the better.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Friday, 17 June 2016 22:13 (seven years ago) link

In the last two episodes, Arya kept flipping between being a badass with everything worked out and being an idiot on the verge of death.

Her Braavos story went on too long with too little of a payoff.

Feel bad that my friend named his daughter after someone who cut a person's face off

because moms and because dads (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 17 June 2016 23:08 (seven years ago) link

I kind of wonder if Arya really was bleeding after she jumped into the fruit market -- because in addition to oranges you see some red fruits, and the red you see on her shirt is because she squashed some fruit.

Interpretive Jigglypuffery (Leee), Friday, 17 June 2016 23:11 (seven years ago) link

if we ever needed a time for Benioff and Weiss to explain something post-show, "so yes Arya tricked the waif with blood orange juice" instead of being like "durr durr Brienne and Jaime have a mutual connection and respect"

nomar, Friday, 17 June 2016 23:17 (seven years ago) link

thought it was clear she crushed some fruits up personally

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 June 2016 03:22 (seven years ago) link

of course fruit juice looks nothing like blood but w/e

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 June 2016 03:23 (seven years ago) link

The waif just wanted to feast on some sweet tropical fruits

, Saturday, 18 June 2016 03:55 (seven years ago) link

the waif is big into juicing

lag∞n, Saturday, 18 June 2016 03:56 (seven years ago) link

the waif has no face how do u like yr juice now hmm

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 18 June 2016 05:03 (seven years ago) link

Doesn't matter, she can't drink juice without a face.

Interpretive Jigglypuffery (Leee), Saturday, 18 June 2016 07:53 (seven years ago) link

If you look closely, Sean Bean's decapitated head was actually a fruit basket. That is, the very same fruit basket Littlefinger sent the Lannisters as congrats to Joffery, who was secretly a Baratheon, which we know is the name of Sean Bean's best friend in season 1.

I almost expected Gandalf to show up next to Sansa.

all that aside, the episode seemed to have a really striking visual style that I wish was present in more episodes.

ryan, Monday, 20 June 2016 03:04 (seven years ago) link

Yeah this episode looked great. It was directed by the guy who did "Hardhome" last year.

bummed about the giant. hope he shows up alive with an eye patch

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 20 June 2016 04:05 (seven years ago) link

some weird implausibles yet again but I'm just going with it from now on.

but seriously: why rickon doesn't run zig-zig in that situation!? I'd be running around like looney tunes.

ryan, Monday, 20 June 2016 04:14 (seven years ago) link

no you wouldn't, no one ever would. we would all run fastest to a to b.

betting they off'd the giant from a purely CGI/budget reason

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 20 June 2016 04:38 (seven years ago) link

i hope sansa sends a raven to theon just to give him a heads up that ramsay got his face chewed off by his own hounds. "took care of that thing for you" etc.

nomar, Monday, 20 June 2016 05:14 (seven years ago) link

I loved a lot of things in the fight, but not a lot of surprises overall

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 20 June 2016 05:29 (seven years ago) link

this was an artfully done episode meant to satisfy a lot of viewer wishes imo more than it was meant to be surprising or interesting. i did think as a battle scene that this was pretty tight, i actually thought this episode might end up as jon snow's little big horn.

nomar, Monday, 20 June 2016 05:30 (seven years ago) link

the fact that it wasn't super surprising or narratively interesting doesn't meant that it wasn't also dope, i thought this was some good shit.

nomar, Monday, 20 June 2016 05:31 (seven years ago) link

Liked Sansa's mind meld with the hounds

So that Meereen situation didn't last long. What was Tyrion's plan again? and how did it differ from killing them all?

The "maybe it's the budget?" Theories are among my least favorite of all nitpicks

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 20 June 2016 09:28 (seven years ago) link

Great ep, very formally well done, thought it was great how the battle really hammered home the luck involved (undercutting the notion of Fate) in Jon snow's success; actually have enjoyed that about his resurrection as well, they treat it not as a foregone conclusion but as an accident
