2002 was really a poor year for mainstream hip-hop I suppose?

Van Horn Street, Monday, 27 June 2016 01:10 (seven years ago) link

guessing from the 2000 and 2001 polls, a hip-hop record need almost legendary status before featuring in an acclaimedmusic top 30.

At the time lots of these albums seemed monumental and I listened to them a ton. But I've barely played any of them in years, save for Interpol (I listen to it quite a lot still) and maybe Wilco and Sigur Ros.

I felt like this was a truly great year for singles and radio but albums didn't match them for intensity, at least in an "obvious classic".

Love The Streets, Missy Elliott, Sonic Youth, Boards of Canada, Sleater-Kinney, 2 Many DJs, DJ Shadow.

The most obvious classics - in both the subjective and objective senses - not here are Metro Area's album and Michael Mayer's Immer mix. There are people who dislike both but I feel like both of these have a pretty rock solid stature within dance music circles.

For me the private classics not listed are Tweet's Southern Hummingbird, Amerie's All I Have, Clipse's Lord Willin, Elephant Man's Higher Level, Sean Paul's Dutty Rock, Farben's Textstar and MRI's All That Glitters. Also I never listen to it as an album but JT's singles from Justified are total classic.

The Disintegration Loops is the best work of art made in response to 9/11. Not only is the concept brilliant - intellectually and emotionally - the pieces themselves beautiful, and more so than anything else I've ever seen or heard, it evokes exactly the mood of Manhattan in the fall of 2001.

I'll never understand what people hear in Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I've given that record a couple of chances and I find it to be mostly dull.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head 0
Eminem - The Eminem Show 0

Proud of us.

I like the fast(er) catchy stuff on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Heavy Metal Drummer, Pot Kettle Black

YHF one of the those records that if the melodies work for you the whole thing is majestic, if they don't it falls apart. Sometimes it is just about tone, I guess.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 01:51 (seven years ago) link

otm. love YHF, everything from Jim O's mix to the lyrics to the atmosphere and yeah the tunes. Summerteeth, YHF, and A Ghost is Born are amazing to me, but everything else they've ever done has left me cold.
