i love the single. chorus is very tame impala. though the whole thing could have been released in 1986 apart from the 90s R&B breaks.

This album is good. I think the Pitchfork review way back when is pretty OTM slotting it in alongside the D'Angelo and Kendrick. It's not about songs as such but moods and themes. I think.

It's growing on me a bit, but still wish some of the songs tunes were as impressive as the moods, themes and what he seems to be going for.

Saw him last week.I took a friend who went in blind, and at first all the '80s style appropriation turned him off, but by the end he was pretty convinced. It's just delivered as this weird contrast of a really talented, compelling, confident guy playing and singing like he's still insecure and trying to figure things out, as an aesthetic, which comes off a little off-kilter and incomplete. But again, by design.

oof i cringed a little when i read that review, seemed like such a cheap and easy critical move to do just bc of some political vocal samples. i love this album but i really don't see it in the same vein as the BM or TBAP, it is very different, honestly i don't even view BM in the same vein as TBAP other than major albums w/ some persona/political themes by black americans?

because of my friend getting a babysitting call she can't refuse, I have come into a free ticket to this guy's performance of his 'score to the easternsports art installation' tonight at the whitney. I know literally nothing about him or his music. IDK sometimes these very random opportunities are great.

That was fucking cool. Basically a continuous ~1 hr solo instrumental piece starting on piano then moving to synth then back to piano then to EWI then finishing on piano, with backing tracks but not very many of them. Reminiscences at various times of McCoy Tyner, Reich, Penguin Cafe, and Vangelis (massive sawtooth sound controlled by EWI in a slow ecstatic solo, the high point of the performance)

was just thinking there was some reichy marimbas on the last album so this makes a lot of sense

on first listen the first half is some of his best work ever, especially Orlando, but it falls off by the end.
