Bionic Commando would have been a nice addition too, I liked that one. Maybe Rush N Attack. Tetris seems like sort of a glaring omission, but I assume there was something to the decision-making process here other than "what are the 20 most classic NES games."

There shouldn't be any arcade conversions on this thing, I could make an exception for donkey kong I guess but does anyone really want to play pac man this way? Or ghosts n goblins?

Lack of Bionic Commando and River City Ransom means the nostalgia value of the mini-NES is unfortunately close to 0 for me.

Granted, the one and only true RCR experience for this guy is playing it with the Sony Trinitron on mute while a cassette of Technotronic's Pump Up The Jam: The Album is on repeat. Fairly sure modern technology would find this completely impossible to emulate.

Zelda ii was great, only problem was that if the game wanted you to do something it would just throw up a big wall without explaining what task it was you didn't complete

Setting aside the pros and cons of Zelda II - I'm a defender, but we got into it on Will M.'s fabulous poll thread - this thing will sell well but is kinda disappointing IMO. Especially since the Nintendo label still stands for some kind of 'quality' in my brain... feels strange to see this kind of mall-kiosk / behind-the-counter-at-Walgreens kind of item being put forth. It's going to make money, but you kind of hope they would burn the midnight oil making a masterpiece retro system rather than an adequate one.

Seems weird they didn't go with something that could connect to the internet and let you buy more games - now that would be interesting. My understanding is that you can basically do that by buying a discount Wii and going nuts, but I imagine that would not occur to a lot of people in the target market for this thing. Or they could have, IDK, put a USB slot on the side and sold 'expansion packs' or something with more games. I mean I don't know how hardware or software work at all, but it would be nice. Beyond nostalgia play of old favorites, or introducing them to the kids or whatever, emulation also gives you the chance to play all the crazy obscure games you never had, but have been hearing about for years.

Now, if I accept the 'fixed lineup' model, I guess I could still see myself getting one of these at some point... it's a crazy price point given the number of games that actually would justify serious hours put into them. I unloaded my NES a few years ago, and this would replace MOST of the games I actually kind of miss having around. And it's not like it having Mario Bros. and Ice Climber takes up space on my shelf that could go to something else. Still, while it's a legit solid "greatest hits" nostalgia package, everybody's nostalgia is a little different. I remember visiting kids' houses and all they had was Mario/Duck Hunt, baseball games, Pro Wrestling, Bad Dudes, Bayou Billy, and two weird games you never heard of. So they're probably not captured by this.

And even for a GOAT kind of list, you look at Will M.'s callbacks to the ballot poll top twenty and it's like, woah, no RCR, no Ducktales, no Contra, that's weird. I get that they weren't going to cram Earthbound Zero onto this, and accept a sort of 'best of the bunch' logic for including only Mega Man II. Going outside the top 20 of that poll, you hit a bunch of things that I think most NES-heads would consider classics. Here's the ones that seem most 'missing' to me:

22. Marble Madness
25. Castlevania III
26. Blaster Master
29. Life Force
33. Jackal
36. Dragon Warrior
45. Duck Hunt (OK obviously this thing wasn't going to have the light gun)
47. Adventures of Lolo

and maybe

23. Metal Gear
33. TMNT 1 (kind of a bullshit game but there's an audience for it)
35. Rampage
84. Rygar (OK this is just me, I admit it)
96. Batman

Frankly, there's an interesting thought-exercise here, how do you capture the 'pure essence' of a very popular system with a huge library? Greatest-games countdowns may make for a better collection of games, but when nostalgia's at play, do you cave and include Ghosts 'n' Goblins? Or Bayou Billy? Best-seller lists might over-weight bad licensed games, or early games that benefited from the dearth of titles (Kung Fu, say). Letting people just buy $1 "virtual cartridges" over the Internet, or even $20 "packs" of miscellaneous titles, would have solved everything, but perhaps the licensing/contracts for that would just be an impossible nightmare, I have no idea.

Rygar was great, a long game with permadeath and no saves. after I won it felt like I could coast the rest of my life on that, tell the grandkids about it, glory days

lag∞n, Monday, 25 July 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link

the whole no saves/permadeath thing was just the norm for so long and completely foreign to most of the modern video game experience

here kid, this is super mario brothers, you get three lives. no, you have to complete all eight worlds right now, or leave the console running on the pause screen or something. just finish it already!

someone's hacked an "every nintendo game, one cartridge" type of thing together, right? I think my friend had one, but maybe that was for snes

my friend with a full standing neo geo arcade system has one of those but with like 50 neo geo games on it. metal slug, king of monsters, puzzle de pon, all a couple button pushes away.

Had a dream that someone had released a mini c64, which worked as a wireless keyboard for PCs. It was cylinderical in shape and about the size of a tv remote, but the keys wrapped all the way around it making it completely unusable.

Remember?

They're using the same tactic for NES Classic. Every store that got them in stock to sell today only had somewhere between 3-12 total... mostly leaning towards the lower end of that.

Evan, Friday, 11 November 2016 16:03 (seven years ago) link

its been a while since they had to make more than 5 consoles at a time, maybe they forgot how to!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 11 November 2016 16:10 (seven years ago) link

Well, they apparently didn't do it with Wii U! From what I hear.
