This is exciting. Thanks guys.

Isnt shoegaze metal like Deafheaven relatively new?

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:51 (seven years ago) link

haha only if it sold lots! Which it hasn't.

I imagine Five Finger Death Punch, soulfly and Devildriver sell way more though I doubt they sell a million copies either but that's where mainstream metal is these days (shite and noone likes it compared to previous decades)

xxpost to tom

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:52 (seven years ago) link

Just saying, I've never seen Darkthrone in a Best Buy display rack.

Tom Violence, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:52 (seven years ago) link

Crossing over in metal is relative, I guess?

Tom Violence, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link

I see a Hellacopters album on the list! Good band i havent heard them in ages

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link

shoegaze metal or blackgaze I suppose is new thanks to Alcest but it's still kinda an offshoot of post black metal, which obviously is an offshoot of black metal and post metal.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link

metal bands discovering my bloody valentine 20 years after the rest of us basically. But taking it shoegaze somewhere new I guess until they then just started making actual shoegaze without the metal

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:56 (seven years ago) link

If anyones wanting a tip for albums to check out i suggest

Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
Warning - Watching From a Distance
Aluk Todolo - Occult Rock
Weakling - Dead as Dreams
Isis - Oceanic/Panopticon (the latter is shoegazier for those into that)
Absu - Tara

for 'poppier' stuff

Torche
Ghost
Uncle Acid
Alcest

Rate Your Music has a best albums 2000-2010 list here
http://tinyurl.com/RYM-Best-Metal-Albums-2000-10

and 2000-16 so just ignore the 2016 albums

http://tinyurl.com/RYM-Best-Metal-Albums-2000-16

They should at least prove a guide for what to listen to but dig deep too if you can.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 23:08 (seven years ago) link

If you are a fan of Black Metal style vocals and harsh guitar sound but enjoy more mid-tempo or even slow riffs and such, and are also a big depressed saddo, you might enjoy the sub-genre of Suicidal Depressive Black Metal. Its a great "blackened" compliment to funeral doom (in fact there are a few bands that are being described as "Funeral Black Metal" but that's primarily last.fm tags).

My favorite SDBM bands are:
Nocturnal Depression
Forgotten Tomb
Lifelover
I Shalt Become

This sort of thing has really only become popular in the last 10 years or more recent. There's some crossover with it and the larger sub-genre of atmospheric black metal but with a major focus on themes of suicide, depression, human extinction, antinatalism, etc. I have found it to be quite cathartic at certain times!

Anyway, that's my big sub-genre plug.

Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link

haha not one for the pop fans! Except the xasthur albums he made with the folk stuff on it

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 00:15 (seven years ago) link

Remember to keep checking pastebin before voting. The nominations requested earlier will be added by seandalai. I have no access to pastebin

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 01:48 (seven years ago) link

Pop fans obv. should be reevaluating Andrew W.K., who I feel is chronically underrated and disrespected.

Frobisher, Monday, 18 July 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link

well, people should remember it's not just a metal poll , it's heavy rock too.

I've only ever heard a few songs by andrew wk that I like. What is his best album?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 02:47 (seven years ago) link

as for AWK here's my rundown: Mother of Mankind > The Wolf > Close Calls With Brick Walls > I Get Wet > his other things (soundtracks, piano stuff, etc.)

His best power ballads are on The Wolf, imo. Close Calls + MoMK was released as a double album at one point so if nothing else I'd say check that out it has a great mix of stuff. If you can get past the realization that his melodies and lyrics have the depth of nursery rhymes he's really really fun.

I suppose his advice article in the Village Voice is actually the best thing he's produced, but that's not music.

Frobisher, Monday, 18 July 2016 03:03 (seven years ago) link

A couple more duplicates in the list:
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Down Among the Deadmen
Dark Space III

Wrong album title:
Grand Supreme Blood Court - Bow Down Before The Blood Court

Siegbran, Monday, 18 July 2016 11:17 (seven years ago) link

Hoping that my policy of not nominating anything works out

imago, Monday, 18 July 2016 11:20 (seven years ago) link

well that was a silly policy

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 11:25 (seven years ago) link

I don't even remember metal

Best Beloved Trumppence (contenderizer), Monday, 18 July 2016 12:27 (seven years ago) link

Just realised no Deftones albums were nominated, was hoping to vote for them as my token nu-metal act.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 18 July 2016 12:34 (seven years ago) link

Well if you follow the Artist - Album format I can add it to google docs and seandalai will add it to the pastebin noms. But only request these things if you actually do at least consider voting for it.

I dont think seandalai has updated pastebin from yesterday so it shouldnt be a problem.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 12:51 (seven years ago) link

Cool, thanks:

Deftones - White Pony
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Deftones - Koi no yokan

Pretty sure all three of these will make my ballot.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 18 July 2016 12:54 (seven years ago) link

Ok, I dont know when seandalai will get round to adding them as he's a busy chap.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:05 (seven years ago) link

I managed to cut down my draft longlist from 150 to 100. Sorted out my provisional top 10. That was really really tough. I wish I had asked seandalai to make the top 15 get extra points not just the top 10.

Is that possible seandalai?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:13 (seven years ago) link

Limp Bizkit looked promising as the flag for nu-metal voters to rally around.

Siegbran, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:17 (seven years ago) link

If the top 15 or top 20 had extra weight then that would make it easier then everyone could then just fill upto 100 or whatever number they can manage and have that part unweighted so they get the same amount of points but those who love to rank 1-100 can do so too.

I hope everyone iwll try make the largest ballot they can. The two months voting period means noone has to rush in ballots and can use the time to listen or relisten to albums.

Which they can add on the playlist for everyone to check out

serious answers please

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:40 (seven years ago) link

I want to put a word in for that Plebeian Grandstand album I nominated - sort of discordant black metal/metalcore crossover (someone on RYM called them 'Deathscreamo Omega'). Really great.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 18 July 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link

Are EPs eligible as well? Or only full lengths?

calstars, Monday, 18 July 2016 15:52 (seven years ago) link

That was one for the nominations thread. I dont actually remember what was decided.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 16:49 (seven years ago) link

I nominated an EP and intend to vote for it.

new board description

Dominique, Monday, 18 July 2016 17:59 (seven years ago) link

Unlike the all-time poll, which everyone knew who would win (but not which album), I dont see any actual certain winner standing out.
There's about at least 20 classics could win but none have sold so much that it makes them overwhelming favourites.

I think the past 15 years has been a great time for metal and heavy rock has been making a comeback to as people get fed up with extremity for extremities sake.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

How is everyone deciding their tops tens? Most listened to albums? Or do you need to cut that shortlist down by ways such as 'game-changers'?

And how about the rest of the top 100 or whatever you choose to do?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link

Contenderizer and imago you always have convoluted ways of making ballots , how are you approaching this?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 19:09 (seven years ago) link

I'm just going to go through the nominations list and put the ones I've heard in order

imago, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link

Not going to use the time to re-listen or listen to albums you haven't heard?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link

The scope here is huge...danger of being too disparate for a consensus?

calstars, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link

Might not be a bad thing?

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:21 (seven years ago) link

ILM has a weird thing of wanting weird results unlike everywhere else who that has people who complains that *insert album here* isnt at #1 or whatever.

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link

I slogged through the As and only saw 14 albums I'd heard (and most of those were by Amon Amarth) so I'm gonna chalk this up to "ILM's version of metal is not metal as I understand it" once again and walk away.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 18 July 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

In before Cosmic Slop yells "IT'S NOT JUST A METAL POLL" again

Tom Violence, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link

yeah, a poll too disparate to achieve consensus is the best kind of poll. Nothing to reach against, no canon to alter -- just a list of the actual favorite albums by the people voting, where everyone is likely to be surprised and learn about new stuff
