Siegbran how will you cut down your 500 album shortlist to 100?

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 21:42 (seven years ago) link

Ruthlessly.

Siegbran, Friday, 22 July 2016 21:43 (seven years ago) link

you will need to be ruthless. But it isn't easy.

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 23 July 2016 12:37 (seven years ago) link

Time for some listening. Has anyone added anything to the Spotify playlist?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 24 July 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link

Just re-voted. Please only use the newest one. Thank you. Sorry about that.

gman59, Sunday, 24 July 2016 22:32 (seven years ago) link

No probs. Will let seandalai know tomorrow just incase he isn't reading this thread

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 24 July 2016 23:12 (seven years ago) link

I let seandalai know

I'm listening to Vintersorg's Visions From the Spiral Generator now. I bought Till Fjälls back at least ten years ago but never really got into anything else they did-- I think someone from a forum I was on at the time suggested it as an indispensable metal album but I didn't even know they were still going in 2005, much less 2016. Spiral Generator is great so far, definitely going to end up in my bottom 30 or so (reserved for stuff I hadn't heard before assembling a ballot).

Tom Violence, Monday, 25 July 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

what year is that from?

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 12:02 (seven years ago) link

I think I've settled on my new top 10 in the wake of the new nominations.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 21:37 (seven years ago) link

xpost Spiral Generator was 2002, Till Fjälls was 1998.

Tom Violence, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 22:00 (seven years ago) link

One of the reasons I prefer Spiral Generator to his earlier albums is that it was the first to use outside musicians, rather than just two guys and a drum machine. And it doesn't hurt that the drummer was Asgeir Mickelson and the bassist was Steve DiGiorgio. (Not to say that the pre-Visons stuff wasn't great too.)

Kinda lost track of Vintersorg after Focusing Blur so one of these days I need to binge.

also obligatory fuck yeah for new Coroner

Devilock, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link

oh right, the Coroner mention was in the other thread; not used to having more than one metal thread floating around

Devilock, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 23:24 (seven years ago) link

It's a good thing though. ILM needs the M to be metal.

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 12:03 (seven years ago) link

Just had to check if Swallowed - Lunarterial made the list, glad it did 'cos I was listening to it last night and forgot how great it is. It really captures the spirit of those ugly early 90s Finndeath demos/albums but doesn't feel retro, it's violent and atmospheric and utterly horrible in the best way.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 18:04 (seven years ago) link

Listening to Oneida now. It sounds like Trans Am?

Tom Violence, Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link

Early Oneida was stoner rock then they went in a more Krauty direction

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 29 July 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link

You listening to Each One Teach One? That's the noisy krautrock masterpiece

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 29 July 2016 00:07 (seven years ago) link

I bet it was 'Secret Wars'

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 29 July 2016 16:40 (seven years ago) link

I dunno why C'mon Everybody Lets Rock wasn't nominated. That's a brilliant album.

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 30 July 2016 02:15 (seven years ago) link

So would anyone like to campaign for some albums? It's a great way to make sure lesser known albums get listened to and maybe voted into the poll.

For those who have only ever heard Boris 'Pink' or 'Smile' please check out the masterpieces
'Flood'
'At Last : Feedbacker'
'Akuma No Uta'
'Dronevil'

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 30 July 2016 17:08 (seven years ago) link

There's been some discussion of Imperial Triumphant's Abyssal Gods on this forum already but it seems like every time I play it for someone, they've never heard it before, and they're usually impressed, so I guess if anyone hasn't heard it, you should try it?

Tom Violence, Sunday, 31 July 2016 04:01 (seven years ago) link

Maybe I need to?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:49 (seven years ago) link

I played it the other night in plug.dj and you didn't like it due to the death metal vox. It's good stuff though, assuming you can deal with the singing.

Tom Violence, Sunday, 31 July 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Oh, them. Yeah I hated the vox

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 31 July 2016 23:23 (seven years ago) link

i lasted til they came in, sorry

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 August 2016 18:26 (seven years ago) link

I've been looking through some things I haven't heard of and noticed that I Shalt Become - Wanderings is from 1996, just to let people know. So far I've discovered Artificial Brain and Jumalhamara through this but I probably won't be familiar enough for them to make onto my ballot unless I have some space free.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 1 August 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

That Refused album came out in 1998, too, I just realized.

Tom Violence, Monday, 1 August 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link

ok please dont vote for those as they wont be counted.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 00:35 (seven years ago) link

think we have 18 ballots in so far. It's definitely time for everyone to start planning theirs now

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 16:16 (seven years ago) link

I'm working on it. The order become more and more arbitrary as it goes down; apart from anything else it's hard to compare, say, Melt-Banana and Agalloch since it depends what kind of mood I'm in.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

You can do mixed ballots where you can weight any number you like and have the rest unweighted where the unweighted albums will all receive the same number of (low) points. But your #100 album will get more points than it would get if it was weighted, but the higher ones wont get as many as if they were weighted.

Any questions ask seandalai

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 17:05 (seven years ago) link

OK cool. I'll think on it.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

♡♡♡ Each One Teach One + Secret Wars

mark e smith and brexit (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

was it you who nominated them?

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 4 August 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

bit quiet in the ballots this week. only one I think

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 August 2016 16:42 (seven years ago) link

Anyone started on their ballots yet? or was there no need for george's "study time" extended voting period as everyone leaves it to the last week anyway?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 6 August 2016 16:22 (seven years ago) link

Youuuuuu

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 6 August 2016 16:46 (seven years ago) link

I just realised I forgot to vote. I might have another look at my final list tho before doing so

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 03:05 (seven years ago) link

and ive no idea if any particular style of metal will dominate

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 03:12 (seven years ago) link

I voted!

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link

So who wants to rep for some albums that everyone can check out and maybe vote for?
Now is your chance to get your fave lesser known albums enough of a boost to get them into the rollout!

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 8 August 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link

Shoegaze fans check out Isis - Oceanic and Isis - Panopticon.

BM fans check out Weakling - Dead as Dreams.

Doom fans check out Warning - Watching From A Distance

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 8 August 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link

If you're into slooooow heavy music and haven't heard either of those Corrupted albums do yourself a favour and check them out!

And I think I've pushed them before, probably around when they came out, but Spectral Lore - III and Gris – À l'âme enflammée, l'âme constellée... are both modern black metal classics imo (but if you only like bm of the raw variety you probably wouldn't get much out of them)

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:19 (seven years ago) link

Also... I'm not sure if many metal thread regulars/lurkers are into avant-prog or whatever but I noticed Lapsus Linguae - You Got Me Fraiche is on the noms list, it's pretty to describe in genre terms: heavy, piano-led art-rock or something like that. Something of an obscure outlier but quite brilliant in parts.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:26 (seven years ago) link

have one guess who nominated it

imago, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

actually don't :D

imago, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

gonna throw together a ballot for this after revisiting all the stuff from the noms list that i've been into in the past

ciderpress, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 14:25 (seven years ago) link

I count about 49 of these that I have owned at one time or another, and of those about 33 that I could see myself voting for. Not sure if I'll have time to try and explore more of the list, but I could probably submit a ballot with just those.
