I finally am playing through MGS V after buying a PS4 this year, starting it, and detouring for a while. Is the online mode good? Any idea if it's... still good? I'm probably doing too many side missions to build things up since I'm only halfway through the main missions.

MGO? eh, it's fine for what it is. not entirely my cup of tea though.
FOB on the other hand is just great. MGSV has a lot of overpowered tools that make the game a little too easy at times (mainly D-Dog) and FOB is a good way to get the challenge back. i've probably played hundreds of FOB missions and i still regularly get caught almost immediately at 40+ FOBs -- it's tough!

I'm on mission 19 so FOB is coming soon!

It's like going to see some band from the seventies and realizing that the drummer is the only original member still in the band and they only play new stuff that sounds nothing like the original band but, hey, they still have the same name!

2017? does that mean the two games were concurrently in development? or are they seriously trying to churn out a modern triple-a in two years?

MGS1 because there are just a lot of factors (the novelty of it + those wobbly underwater PS1 graphics + memories of being an upright hominid on earth in the 1990s) that make me forgive how misguided and embarrassing it all is when you think about it.
I like 2 and 3 well enough. But right after 1 it gets a little cringeworthy with the professional wrestling bad guys and hour long cutscenes and Kojima's Jaden Smith level profundity.

aim for the big pods on it
find the tank and the rocket launcher vehicle, tho you may still get jacked up
develop the most advanced RPG there is, the one that has multiple homing warheads
run around like an idiot

there's no way in the game to find out where you get tech specialists other than looking at mission descriptions and interrogating randos, right? the only straightforward way is to look on the web. kind of ridiculous.
it'd be cool if you could tell Ocelot to scout for a sleeping gas specialist or w/e and after a couple outings he'd contact you with a lead

I'm guessing some of these dudes were ones I did extract in particular missions but didn't understand the direct contract system yet.

playing MGS3. i think it is my pick for the best one overall. there really is a mythical nature to all of the characters in this game. if they were to make a movie based on any of the games this one would be my pick.
just defeated The Fury. he is the Cobra member i think of the least, but the fight is pretty good and his intro/outro cinematics are so cool. i guess his backstory is that he was an early test astronaut? they start playing audio from a test flight right before he kills himself, engulfing himself in a ball of flame, thinking he is coming home to Earth. then he turns into a giant face made of fire.

yeah no game has made me think im tripping like MGS2 has, but MGS3 is just the most solid all-around, and the level design has it beat.

I was obsessed with MGS and played it many times, but never even tried the sequels. I'm worried they'd be a letdown.
I'm guessing the movie is going to be completely stripped of everything that makes the game so weird and magical.

Play Phantom Pain. It came out too late to be polled here but it's just the best. And very nicely balanced, difficulty-wise (as I am also kind of shit wrt the old MGS games). See discussion upthread and, I'm sure, elsewhere on the board.

in a way i prefer ground zeroes. it’s almost like an arcade game. same layout +tweaked objectives = totally different levels. you can do speed runs even.
