The Fatima Mansions seem like a good one. Microdisney as well, even though Microdisney feel more in tune with styles that people care about in 2016.I don't know if they are both better remembered in Ireland maybe?

I'm told that Martha and the Muffins - "Echo Beach" gets a lot of play in the UK but I've literally never heard it on Canadian radio, despite it going gold and winning a Juno.

In the UK you hear Echo Beach all over the place but never any other Martha & The Muffins songs, ever.

Can movies be discussed in this thread? I was just reflecting on the fact that "American Pie" was a gigantic smash hit, people quoted from it all the time, it was seen as the "Animal House" of its moment, and now? Kind of gone, right?

other than the 300 straight to DVD sequels under the name American Pie? hell local art movie house just showed it as a 'cult classic'. it's ubiquitous, people still say "oh, Stiffler's mom", MILF, an existing term, became part of mainstream lexicon and is still there. history enhanced, not erased it!

American Pie or its sequels seem to be on tv quite a bit on various channels. So yeah seems to be more staple than forgotten.

I think that in that in the UK Martha + the Muffins are regarded as a memorable one-hit wonder with a funny name, which afaict is how they have always been regarded here since 1979, I don't think there has been any change in their profile as such

the 3rd martha and the muffins album ('this is the ice age') is worth a listen - has an odd disconnected vibe to it, and is a bit eno-ish in places. one of the earlier daniel lanois productions fwiw (his sister was in the band at that point)

If you look through the NME albums-of-the-year list, which I think is a reasonable enough indication of stuff they thought was going to stand the test of time, the early 90s gives you albums by the 3rd Bass, Electribe 101, The Fatima Mansions, The Goats, Madder Rose and Gallon Drunk, none of whom afaik are listened to by anyone who wasn't there at the time or even referred to in 'lol early 90s' type articles.

The Viva Dead Ponies album became one of those "holy grail" used CDs for me. I used to check for it in every store I went into. By the time I finally tracked down a copy though, I didn't like it at all. I wonder if I'd enjoy it now?

Are High llamas any better remembered?
Sean O'Hagan the main guy was at least at one point the other major guy in Microdisney.

I see they have a new lp out this year that I don't remember hearing about. So must still have some recognition.

In my experience Sean O'Hagan is remembered, but his actual bands much less so.

Gallon Drunk are still going strong. Both live where they are very intense and on album. Their 2014 release "The Soul of the Hour" was great. Dark, hypnotic, aninmalistic grooves. Like "Exile on Main Street" but better.

Gallon Drunk at Phoenix 97 is still the best gig I've ever been to, don't seem to actually own any of their music though, used to have one CD but lost it somewhere.

Smithereens I think?

Good lord, yes. One of my all-time fave art rock records. I'm sure they're doing quite well with Echo Beach residuals but this is the work that should've defined Martha/Muffins/M+M.

i absoutely love the 'televise' album ..
they really were on the verge of crossing over for a short time, but things fell apart both re band and record label.
seem to recall they tried to get things going again a few years ago (myspace era !), but their time was over.
such a shame.

Was watching Buffy and there was a Lotion poster on the dorm wall.
