despite still being unemployed and thus theoretically "freer" my reading has fallen off in kind of a big way - have mostly been circulating between 'the confessions of zeno' (which is v. funny) and a book about the NATO bombing of libya, probably neither of which fit yr present mood. my boyfriend liked that garth greenwell book that's been getting a fair amount of praise lately but i haven't read it yet

also hi gays! things are mostly kinda uneventful (recent TMI posts notwithstanding), but i'm going to nyc for the weekend for a dear friend's wedding and then i get to spend a few days in philly with a certain gay thread regular!!!

While we're near the beginning of the thread, I have a non-rhetorical question: are people here ok with this being a mixed-gender queer thread? If not, I don't want to intrude.

My favorite genre-ish queer text in a while (also read while unemployed; I don't know quite where it falls on the trash to high art spectrum) might be Torrey Peters's Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones, a strange, mordant novella about civilizational collapse and the internal tensions of trans lesbian separatism: the SF elements are a little sketchy, but the trans characters' relationships and toxic community dynamics are explored with painful acuity.

that sounds awesome. i'm always following your posts on i love books. i chose 'queer' to be more welcoming to people who fall outside of 'gay,' so yes, please keep posting.

bf and i watched Party Girl last night

So I broke it off with my Polydude last Sunday and it's been a week of heavy rain :(

He been calling our mutual friends and shit-talking me. Pumping my friends in NewCity about the NewGuy I'm dating. Calling me to tell me he's gonna tell NewGuy "the truth" about me. Telling me that his boyfriend hates me. Telling me everyone hates me and only hangs with me for status reasons (? ok). Telling me my ex hates me. Telling me I moved cross-country because I had sucked Montreal dry. Telling me that all the generosity I show people is just manipulation. And so on.

Today it reached a breaking point in terms of abusive screaming and I had to block him. I am sad, I genuinely love Polydude and I only broke it off for administrative reasons, really. This sucks and I feel crazy!

I think his anger is rooted in a clap scare we had last July. Could've just been a UTI, but we all took pills regardless. We didn't play any whodunnits about it.

But Polydude has been lying about hooking up with a friend of mine. He's been telling us that it was nothing; no, my friend says it was everything. Polydude has been lying about it, minimizing the facts to save his embarrassment and protect himself. Idk if that was what caused the clap. But Polydude blamed me for the clap scare because I'm dating NewGuy-- but NewGuy and I had done nothing before the scare except kiss and cuddle. So yeah. This whole thing feels like Shame IV.

I watched Shame the other day with NewGuy and I'm pretty sure I have a sex addiction. Or maybe I'm just bummed bc NewGuy and I aren't having sex? Is this normal? Do people date for months and not have sex or sleepovers? Have I been living in a weird parallel universe where boyfriends have sex as much as possible?

I had that once and it was weird, I wanted sex he didn't but we slept and cuddled and felt safe together

I'm glad we have a queer thread rather than a gay one (thanks maps) and I hope we can get some lassies in here or non binary or curious or whatever. Straight people too! My best friend is straight but identifies as queer.

Lass here; I'm not nonbinary, but I would just follow however that person described themself: some nb people might identify as nonbinary but also as aligned with a specific gender, others wouldn't.

cool, a little jealous to be honest! those are the kinds of friends i need / want.

i'm having a good time with a 24-yo phd student. he wanted to cuddle tonight but i demurred. i like sleeping alone in my bed dammit, anything else is a sacrifice. we're getting dinner friday night. i think the lesson from my previous relationship is always be fucking honest.

My boyfriend's mom passed away on Sunday after an extended period in hospice so the last several months and the last few days in particular have been something of a challenge. Still, we're getting through it and adapting where necessary. Real life, real adult shit, I guess.

Fine. I'm eating salted nuts at my desk.

Good. Back to school for my last round of course work ever. Taking a Queer and Transgender Studies course (for which I just started reading Epistemology of the Closet for the first time), along with a lit course on children.

Otherwise, the gayest thing I encountered all week was the cheetah in Zootopia.

(I just realized that was a rather odd introduction to the thread, lol)

I'm sure I'll date again btw but after so many failures fatigue inevitably sets in. I think it's good to take time to know yourself before you drag other people in.

Not a lot of distinctly queer-specific experience this week: I worried about the future, went to a noise demonstration in solidarity with the prison labor strike and felt dysphoric about my voice leading chants (I can't modulate it well while shouting; as a rule I assume that everyone can clock me anyway, but I still feel uncomfortable about it), had to hurriedly and somewhat awkwardly ascertain in the middle of the night that a roommate wasn't actually suicidal (her tumblr's evidence to the contrary), worked on an essay for a friend's collaborative zine, waited for the advent of scarf and sweater weather.

this week, like many weeks before, has been spent applying for jobs and never hearing back about any of them, good stuff

I finished Joseph and His Brothers, in which every character, including his dad Jacob, lusts after the title character.
