sludge is a faster brutal form of doom. then theres stoner rock/metal which is fuzzier and more MC5/Stooges or psychedelic influenced doom.

and of course there is drone metal and if you like Sunn o))) then you should like Boris drone metal

I'm not really into doom much -- tho I think it is actually easier to approach than most other extreme metal. I can say I was into Electric Wizard, Sleep and Sunn O))) (let alone Black Sabbath or Trouble) before I was into, say, Autopsy or Darkthrone. Some of that stuff ended up on my ballot, and I actually voted for one funeral doom record too-- there are moments where it hits the spot. Most days tho I want something faster/harder.

As far as sludge, I didn't actually vote for any Melvins or Boris, but I like the early Melvins stuff just fine.

I wonder how Earth & Om will do. Popular albums in the EOY Metal polls but noone ever mentions them now

Pretty much all of the death metal fans on the rolling thread havent voted btw. So if there's a lack of DM in the results please blame them (unless you can persuade them to vote)

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

I voted for OM but not with any great amount of enthusiasm.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Friday, 9 September 2016 15:58 (seven years ago) link

I have a lot of almost inarticulable pickiness when it comes to metal. For instance, I don't like a lot of sludge vocals and I couldn't really say why. I also like my metal/psychedelia crossovers to be more esoteric and impenetrable than anything like the Stooges. Sunn0))) on my ballot a little though so I will definitely listen to these Boris tracks.

tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

btw folks if you are doing a mixed ranking , leave a space between the ranked part (at the top of the ballot) and the unranked part

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

What is it most crucial that I listen to out of:

Absu - Tara
Burzum - Belus
Burzum - Fallen
Daughters - Daughters
Elder - Lore
Esoteric - Paragon Of Dissonance
Magic Circle - Journey Blind
Ne Obliviscaris - The Aurora Veil
Warning - Watching From a Distance

Also, what is best for running to? (N.B. I have never been running before)

tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:24 (seven years ago) link

Warning - Watching From a Distance
Esoteric - Paragon Of Dissonance

but dont run to those but they are CLASSICS

run to Absu - Tara (its awesome)

smoke to Elder after the run

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

That definitely sounds like the right way to go about things. Thanks for the advice!

tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

don't listen to either of those burzum records

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 September 2016 17:41 (seven years ago) link

Belus wasnt too bad but why anyone would want to listen to any of them now is beyond me.

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 17:45 (seven years ago) link

the Elder record rules

ciderpress, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:52 (seven years ago) link

Yeah thats pretty good

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:53 (seven years ago) link

I wasn't sure what people made of contemporary Burzum, but thank you - I'll avoid. Will check out Elder before deadline too then.

tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:58 (seven years ago) link

Enjoying the Elder record. Absu left me a little, ah, cold and made me want to listen to Meshuggah.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

I really have no idea what will be in the top 10 as there's no consensus on the best albums 2000-15 is there?

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:08 (seven years ago) link

Have any metal albums that have critical acclaim also sold shitloads?
Its not like the 80s where you know Metallica or Slayer will win.

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:09 (seven years ago) link

ILX cant even agree on the best Jute Gyte or Darkspace albums, lol

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

whatever imago says it is everyone else argues it isnt! :)

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

Best Darkspace shouldn't be controversial

imago, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

No Darkspace is good Darkspace ;)

Drugs A. Money, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

otm

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:20 (seven years ago) link

you both dislike Darkspace?

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:23 (seven years ago) link

Three of their albums are pretty dull, but one is fucking spectacular

imago, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:24 (seven years ago) link

at least you all agree on Babymetal

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

don't listen to either of those burzum records

Purely on musical merits, Fallen is an excellent record front to back, Belus has its moments but too much filler. The rest of contemporary Burzum is extremely uneven.

Definitely listen to Absu and Esoteric.

Siegbran, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:29 (seven years ago) link

With Darkspace I'm firmly in the II camp.

Siegbran, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

I think they got better with each release but a lot of folks think III is best

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:31 (seven years ago) link

Should I listen to Paragon of Dissonance if The Maniacal Vale is quite high up my ballot?

imago, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

you havent already when it came out?
The ones before TMV are even better.

A band who has never made a less than great album imo

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:36 (seven years ago) link

this is already brilliant

imago, Friday, 9 September 2016 18:38 (seven years ago) link

told you so, but you really need to hear all of the 90s and 00s albums

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:47 (seven years ago) link

esp listen to Subconscious Dissolution Into the Continuum

LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

Running. Elder album is fucking incredible!

tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

Yes it is. Darkspace III didn't do much for me but I remember thinking the later material was good. Didn't know it well enough to vote for it, though.

Glaciation - Sur les falaises de marbre
Primordial - To the Nameless Dead

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Friday, 9 September 2016 19:57 (seven years ago) link

That Glaciation album is quite cool, but I think I settled on finding it a little too subtly atmospheric for my tastes in the end. I will add Primordial to my list!

The Esoteric album is sublime, btw

tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 20:05 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I see what you mean. I consider the last ambient-ish track to be just a nice way to settle down after the epic "real" tracks.
