The other two songs you linked don't do much for me but I'll give you that I find "Public Apology" kind of catchy in a moronic way. Taking that much pride in saying "cunt" and "bitch" is obv pathetic, though. I'm somewhat intrigued by this phenomenon: I gather that they have a decent cult-sized audience and perform on rock album charts; however, I honestly don't know anyone who listens to them and have only really heard of them because of your posts on Rolling Metal.

Meanwhile, the only place I hear of most of the bands under discussion on Rolling Metal is...on Rolling Metal.

Well, yeah, but most of those bands are objectively obscure. This band seems to have a wider audience so I'm intrigued as to why I don't come across it.

Not surprised your students aren't into it sund4r. I expect them to prefer dream theater or opeth

I think what Phil is getting at is that these bands are what is popular across the US in smaller cities and towns etc . I dont know much about the geography of the usa but I guess what gets called midwest america and middle america? Not the metropolitan cities.

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:21 (seven years ago) link

i like slipknot. and that's it. as far as this stuff goes. kinda insane that this could even still be a thing in 2016. the lead guy's voice is beyond bad. and they do digi-death voices, right? like, they create them in the studio. which could be cool if it were even MORE over the top. i dunno, i can think of all kinds of ways that you could take all these elements and make them cooler. which is why i will stick with die antwoord. the budget gangsta lyfe stuff in the vids though...just so lame.

if someone gave me the money i would be more than happy to put together the perfect annoying edm/dubstep/atari teenage riot/heavy death/doom/soccer/oi/hardcore gang chorus cash cow.

Attila are from Atlanta, which is the ninth largest city in America. They're a Southern party-rock band, but they sell out mid-sized shows nationwide. They're about to launch a headlining US tour with Emmure and two other bands as support; the venue they're playing near me (in NJ) holds 2500 people. Bands like Trivium and Killswitch Engage headline there when they come through.

Fair enoughT but I did mean the fanbase. Most of the stuff on rolling metal probably has most fans in the cities but this stuff sells in provincial working class america (i live in provincial working class scotland tho not far from Glasgow but Scotland is tiny)

I still see loads of Slipknot tshirts and hoodies, dont see that ever going away now but dunno anyone who would listen to Emmure, Hell Yeah or Attila. But then again, im 43 and have no kids. None of my cousins weans are into metal. Metal isnt that popular just now here.

Is it any different in the US?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:36 (seven years ago) link

How many albums do these bands sell? I'd love to see a list of top 100 selling metal albums each year.

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:51 (seven years ago) link

mook metal/post-grunge/whatever may not be the massive cash cow it once was (but then what is?) but it has never died off in america. the rock songs chart is currently topped by (good lord) two twenty-one pilots songs but there's still a disturbed song lurking in the top ten.

a basset hound (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:53 (seven years ago) link

Metal is more popular in the US than in the UK, but that's always been the case. But Attila fans (who are mostly teenagers) don't consider them metal, I don't think. They get covered in Alternative Press more than Revolver.

Every Disturbed album since their second one has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:55 (seven years ago) link

never heard of two twenty-one pilot but I expect I can guess how they sound

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:55 (seven years ago) link

Lol, he means two songs by Twenty-One Pilots. And they do NOT sound like what I would expect the biggest rock band in America to sound like.

See, Disturbed and Slipknot are bands that I am exposed to irl.

640 million views on their biggest video and I only just learned about twenty one pilots today. A bit disconcerting.

to be fair that's only 30.5 million views per pilot

hey this thread isn't about the Mayhem vocalist at all! I've been hornswoggled!

oh well here's him doing Priest karaoke

I did watch the virtual lap dance video up there and, well, I can't really add to anything that's been said. A quick check of setlist.fm tells me this band has usually played my fav Atlanta venue (The Masquerade) and I'd managed to be unaware of their existence til now.

What do you think of King 810, Van Gorp?

the coyotes have taken over the town (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 25 September 2016 05:17 (seven years ago) link

The thing that's interesting to me about this band is that their lyrics are def a frothy mix of knuckle-dragging lowest-common denominator "party" music — a mix of post-NYHC pit mook, Sunset Strip glam metal badboy, and the lazy hip-hop tropes adopted by circa '07 MySpace Los Angeles "scene" bands, BUT unlike, say, Hollywood Undead they are definitely super ugly/extreme deathcore.... So, their lyrics are basically saying "we say the dumbest shit imaginable because want the most fans humanly possible" but their music is saying "this is very precise and well-rehearsed and ugly and off-putting."

Like imagine if it was 1992 and someone did a record where the music sounded like Cannibal Corpse but the lyrics were Winger's "17" and Slaughter's "Smooth Up in Ya." That's the best analogy I can come up with.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 25 September 2016 05:34 (seven years ago) link

That all said, this band is certainly more INTERESTING than, like, Parquet Courts. But I'm not exactly sure I'm ready to call them "good."

I guess this stands up in the sense that Parquet Courts have morphed into a band that could not possibly be less interesting, but at least they don't seem like reprehensible people who deserve syphilis.

What do you think of King 810, Van Gorp?

Taking into account that I still worked for Roadrunner when they were first signed...I like them. I think David Gunn is a good writer who comes up with some really great lines, and the band is capable of different sounds - they do the ultra-heavy nu-metal thing, but they also do semi-acoustic folk-country material really well. Also I like the fact that they're so relentlessly local and fixated on basically one subject: the shittiness of life in Flint, MI. I haven't heard the whole new album yet but I like the songs I have heard.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 25 September 2016 11:42 (seven years ago) link

They are interesting in a very Chuck Eddy way, like anything mook that has kinda trash aesthetics and is anti respectable and throws around genre signifiers and exists at some nexus of metal and hip hop or electronic and b yh all means most importantly can be used as Whiney just did as a way of tweaking some brand name respectable indie band, but I dunno like in this day and age 21 white dudes being assholes seems like literally the most boring shit ever and morally vacant and honestly this music just fucking sucks

Do you demand respectability and moral responsibility from all musicians, or just young white men?

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 25 September 2016 13:54 (seven years ago) link

No but it's like ok limp bizkit with slightly different metal and hip hop influences seems profoundly BORING I'll retract my moral comment because i don't and I feel like you're one post from dropping an "sjw" comment...

I have no doubt that these guys have enough money to live well, but the house in the video looks like a suburban orthodontist's house instead someplace where a metal band in Atlanta would live

New song sucks. Lyrics, for anyone who cares:

Don't give a fuck about the guidelines
Don't care bout pleasing all of you
I wanna watch the fucking world burn
I wanna burn you too
Push me to the edge cuz I welcome death

I don't wanna hear that smack
I don't even roll like that
Rather grab a rope and tie you up no slack
Better get back for I rack your ass
You can count on that WHAT
Wanna feel your brains, slice your veins
Toss you into the lake
I could take you out with no remorse
And bitch I won't even blink

Kiss the blade
Bite the curb
Maybe we should overdose
Say the word
I know you wanna watch me die
Watch me hurt
But legends always stay alive
Mark my words

Everything I see is red
Everything I see is dead
Bitch you know I need some head
Better keep me fed
Better make some bread
'Fore I spray this lead UH
I'm sick and tired of dreaming about the end I never know what's really real till the Bullet is in my head

All these days spent thinking of death
I'm gonna stab a fucking hole through your god damn chest
I want to see you fucking struggle till there's nothing left
I wanna put you in the grave I wanna take your flesh
I wanna wear your face

You will never cancel me I know you're just an enemy and if you're not a friend of me then you won't make the end of me
You wanna make me fucking break
But I've got nothing to take
Grab you by the throat and shake
Wanna feel your neck break motherfucker what
EEEEEEEEEEEEE
Get fucked
I wanna smash your fucking face in

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:42 (three years ago) link
