DETROIT -- It was a curious time for a bunt, with two men out and the bases loaded in the third inning.

When Detroit Tigers shortstop Andrew Romine laid the ball down in front of the plate, pitcher Peter Moylan quickly flipped it to the catcher for a force-out at home.

Was Romine instructed to bunt? Did someone miss a signal?

No and no, said manager Brad Ausmus.

"He just did that on his own," Ausmus said.

Why, particularly in that situation?

"You'd have to ask him," Ausmus said. "I can't say what he was thinking."

Romine chose not to say, either, declining to talk to media after the game.

@cmccosky
Andrew Romine on attempting bases-loaded, 2-out bunt: "I thought it was the right move, only because the third baseman was back."

And you...bunted it straight to the pitcher.

@cmccosky
Romine: "If I get on, get a run in and bring top of lineup up, with Kinsler, I don't think anybody would be questioning me there."

Ah, hadn't thought about that. *tips cap*

Castellanos activated and presumably working on bunt situations -- bases loaded/two outs, etc. -- right now.

Fulmer began this game needing 6.1 IP to qualify for the ERA title. Rain delay after three innings (and 68 pitches). Not looking good.

@cmccosky
Fulmer throwing in the bullpen. He will be back for the fourth.

Interesting.

They couldn't play because Romine tried to drive through flood water and got stuck.

"If I make it to the ballpark, I don't think anybody would be questioning me there."

.@JUST_JUP's 12 homers in September are the most by a Tiger since Hank Greenberg hit 16 homers in September, 1946.

GET IN THE VAN

@DetroitTigersPR
With tonight's start, @DanielNorris18 has allowed 3 earned runs-or-fewer in 19 straight starts, the longest active streak in the AL.

Ha, right -- which sent St. Louis to Detroit and started what is now ELEVEN years of unfinished business.

Figured this team was good for 86-88 wins and a shot at the wild card. Given all the injuries, I'd say they overachieved.

Sorta too bad they won't play game 162 against Cleveland. Fulmer was due to start. Had he thrown 3.1 scoreless innings, he would have qualified and squeaked by Sanchez for the ERA title at 2.99.

Looks Verlander led the AL in Ks and WHIP. Wasn't expecting that.

Ausmus and the Tigers seem really thrilled with one another.

Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila said he saw no reason to give manager Brad Ausmus a multiyear contract.

Before Friday night’s game in Atlanta, Ausmus was asked about Braves interim manager Brian Snitker. He joked: “I’ve been an interim manager for three years.”

@BradGalli
Al Avila: "To hire a rookie guy, how we did it back then, you look back and say, 'Maybe we could have done it differently.' I'd admit that."

Cool!

Fulmer, offseason plumber, said he might place trophy in office at his house. "I don't really do any desk work in my home," he said.
