grimes' ART ANGELS poll

My theory: She lost the original files, loved the song, had toremake the song either way because she needs the original files to play it live or something. Vinyl takes longer than CD/digital files to print so the original tracklist doesn't include Realiti at all. While waiting for the vinyl release she was still working on Realiti 2.0 and when she finished she said 'well, here it is, might as well add it in the cd/digital version'.

how is a demo less self-conscious than a studio recording?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 September 2016 22:07 (seven years ago) link

the two versions are very different. they're completely different songs that evoke different emotions.

Treeship, Monday, 26 September 2016 22:11 (seven years ago) link

the demo is languid and reflective and the album version is sung with conviction. the demo is great but it wouldn't fit on art angels, which imo is a major departure from her earlier sound.

Treeship, Monday, 26 September 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link

I'm glad we've reached consensus.

that's what i'm here for

hahaha

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 26 September 2016 22:19 (seven years ago) link

hmm interesting theory, moka, but it conspicuously fails to address the reptilians, seen here directly influencing grimes' decisions during the recording process.

when I get up, this is what I see

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Monday, 26 September 2016 22:23 (seven years ago) link

i understand where katherine is coming from. if people here were saying they liked grimes' "old stuff" better than her newer, riskier material (it was def risky for her to make an album that was more about expression than atmosphere, not to mention one that had been mostly stripped of wistful, melancholy moments) i would probably hit them. but i don't think that's the argument people are making.

Treeship, Monday, 26 September 2016 22:24 (seven years ago) link

By the way I completely agree the album version suits the album better, AND I love both Visions and Art Angels, AND I love the demo REALiTi and Grimes is one of my favourite and most respected artists.

MatthewK, Monday, 26 September 2016 22:27 (seven years ago) link

i feel like the word "genius" isn't applied to her often enough

Treeship, Monday, 26 September 2016 22:46 (seven years ago) link

in some ways it's a bankrupt concept, but like, if any working mainstream artist should have a reputation as a mad visionary, uniquely immune from certain ordinary limits, i think it's grimes

Treeship, Monday, 26 September 2016 22:47 (seven years ago) link

So just to wrap up my opinion:

REALiTi demo is the bridge between Visions and Art Angels. At that point that demo was, imho, the best song she had ever crafted, the peak of her pre-art angels sound. I don't know if Grimes thought the same about it but that was the last song she released before shifting her sound and ambitions for Art Angels. It's like she just said 'ok, I already know how to do this sort of music... it's been fun and all but let's move on to something trickier now'.

REALiTi 2.0 is, then, the sound of Grimes revisiting a previous sound but with her new found pop ambitions. Whereas I think REALiTi demo is the best of her pre-art angels songs, REALiTi 2.0 is one of the least exciting things in here, and it's not because we've heard the song before, it's because it's written differently than the rest of the material. In Art Angels she is working with much less restrictions than before - again I suck at technicalities so don't know how to explain this - while her previous albums sound very loop-based and are in turn limited by them, art angels is much more 'maximalist' so to speak.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 26 September 2016 22:49 (seven years ago) link

Oddly enough I don't think she's zany or crazy enough for the mainstream, but yes, she's quite talented and she does ticks all the boxes for huge mainstream recognition. I'd still prefer if she just stayed in between both worlds... having her as a pop tourist instead of a full-blown pop icon works better for her and her music I think.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 26 September 2016 23:03 (seven years ago) link

But hey, if she opens the way for like-minded pop artists to dominate the airwaves then bring it on.

Voted "World Princess Part II". "Venus Fly" is worthy of more love though.

There are just SO MANY GOOD SONGS ON ART ANGELS. Could make a case for most of them as "best".

conversation about literally any other track on this record >>>>>>>> conversation about realti demo vs realiti studio

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 05:50 (seven years ago) link

xp Alfred, a demo recording, like a first take, can be less self conscious in the sense that you don't yet know what it should or could sound like, and because you're not trying to get the definitive take

niels, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 06:10 (seven years ago) link

brad otfm can we please talk about Pin or something

Which songs will get no votes? Instrumental passages like 'Laughing and not being normal' and 'Life in the Vivid Dream' I suppose... and actual songs with low votes? Belly of the Beat and title track?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:26 (seven years ago) link

i voted for the title track

nomar, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:29 (seven years ago) link

I honestly cant remember what I voted for... I guess it was realiti if not that then easily or flesh

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Oh! or butterfly that one is amazing

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Realiti vs. Realiti was the best part of this poll.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:45 (seven years ago) link

If Belly of the Beat gets no votes I will be sad I voted for California.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:49 (seven years ago) link

whoa whoa whoa whoa Belly of the Beat is one of the best songs on here, I loved that song immediately. title track took a bit longer bc the gtr hook gave me early aughts adult contemporary pop PTSD

flappy bird, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link

idk why anyone would vote for laughing and not being normal. great song title wasted on an intro

flappy bird, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link

I voted for the title track and I'm surprised it doesn't get any love on this thread. The way it culminates with the ooooohs at the end is just euphoric!

LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 22:36 (seven years ago) link

Title track probably my second favourite after "Pin".

Wow, I did not expect that

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link

it's a deserving choice

Treeship, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 00:04 (seven years ago) link

It was my pick, but I didn't at all think it was so well loved given t g at most of the conversation here focused on other tracks.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link

*given that

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link

i voted for flesh w/out blood before i re-listened to the album for the first time in several months. i'm glad it did well but i feel some pangs of regret for not sending more love to the title track or pins.

another thing i noticed upon re-listening is that this is my favorite album from the last 10 years at least and i typically prefer music that's a little less, i dunno, polished?

dynamicinterface, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 01:12 (seven years ago) link

oh and the demo version of realiti is best

dynamicinterface, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 01:15 (seven years ago) link

I will rep for some of the "nil points" tracks - "Life in the Vivid Dream" is no way the best song on the album, but it gets me in the feels like none of the others. And "Belly of the Beat" is a perplexing no-show, it's so beautiful and enveloping. Yep, literally unable/unwilling to vote here.

MatthewK, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link

The fact that Belly of the Beat got shut out means this poll needs to be redone within the next year

flappy bird, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 12:07 (seven years ago) link

"Laughing and not being normal" was my second choice

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

so when is the demo vs album version poll? it's the only way to be sure.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:42 (seven years ago) link

the short tracks are great, intro works beautifully and life in the vivid dream has some of my fav moments on the album, would love to hear more grimes along those lines
