So, Human Energy then. Haven't heard anything this guy's done before, and only found out about this record cos Dawn Richard is on it, but I'm two thirds of the way through and loving it.

two weeks pass...

So this is like... a pop album?

It's extremely brightly coloured, I didn't really expect this from him, closer to Glass Swords or the last Hudson Mohawke record than his previous records, but with the same frenetic approach to rhythm. I like it but some of it feels half-realised and it didn't quite live up to the frankly awesome promise of the first couple of minutes.

the song w/ jesse boykins is amazing

I feel like this is to current pop what the last Lone album was to classic rave.

Most of the vocals on this are really not to my taste. Shame cos there's some pretty spectacular production going on.

The new one that is, I love Room(s).

Theoretically I have mixed feelings abou my this Jamie XX move, but in practice I love it pretty unproblematically.

I don't really hear this as a Jamie XX move? That would imply this was grey, lifeless, limp, unengaging, etc. I can imagine this actually provoking a response.

this feels lively and fresh, compared to Vapor City. it sounds like he's moving beyond his regular template/formula, with more immediate pop elements and flashiness.. dig the bright, colorful, up front quality of the sounds. i read a lot of negative talk about the new album, pleasantly surprised

FWIW I'd be very happy with an entirely Machinedrum-produced Dawn album. They seem a pretty good fit for one another.

Well, that's what's you're getting (see Dawn thread)

:)

four months pass...

I've decided I don't like Human Energy, too much focus on pyrotechnics over atmosphere, too many cheesy arse singers. A lot of it sets my teeth on edge, as accomplished as it is.

check out Folding Time, the recent Sepalcure album.. it's got Machinedrum vibes, but more varied/dynamic--it's less exhausting

Cheers for the tip, sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Good suggestion on the Sepalcure. Human Energy tires me in the same way Prefuse 73 does (now).
