Rany Jazayerli:
How unusual is Joe Maddon’s approach to defensive positioning? We had to invent a new metric to fully appreciate it — and to understand what it might mean for the Cubs’ World Series hopes.

a version of this could be posted every year, or at least every year that a clearly dominant team is in the postseason, but it's still worth reading for anyone who might assume that the best team will probably win the world series:

That line in the Cameron piece about how the Cubs probably don't feel lucky to have to go through Cueto and Bumgarner...I mean, too bad! I'm sure they're not griping about it.
Here's my argument in favor of "tournament baseball" - the team that plays better than the other team in a particular game usually wins that game.

― System, Saturday, 8 October 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link
the team that plays better than the other team in a particular game usually wins that game.
i'd agree with that if you mean "usually" as in like 51% of the time.
i mean, let's say both team's starting pitchers dominate. they don't allow any hits or runs. until the 9th inning. in the 8th inning, Team A gets two singles, then a home run. They're up 3-0. Team B bats in the bottom of the 9th. The first guy hits a home run. Then there are two singles, and then the ending ends. They lose 3-1. Both teams end up with 3 hits (2 singles and a home run). Did team A really play better?
versions of that happen all the time. sure there are plenty of games where one team makes a few terrible errors and the starting pitcher obviously doesn't have it. but there's a reason that even division-winning teams still lose 40% of the time, and it's not because they forget how to be good at baseball during 2/5 of their games

Managing the pitching/bullpen has been one of the Bochy/Righetti's forte, so much that they were confident about trading for Moore and paying good money to Samardzija. I don't know what they could have done to prevent his implosion, it does seem like since the end of August they have tried everything, I'm sure they'll have the ressources to fix this. They still have a lot of very good elements, and they gave us great moments this season.
Rooting for the Nats now, because you know.

I went to bed early with a headache last night so this was a pleasant surprise when I woke up. Watching the ninth inning now, I'd blame the SF defense before their relievers. There were a lot of ground balls past diving infielders, plus the botched double play.

can't imagine watching that as a Giants fan. brutal. in obvious hindsight, felt like you needed to leave one of those relievers in there. Like they would each throw 3 balls right away... needed to settle in a bit. props to the cubbies who I will hate all postseason & until i perish from the earth.

― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:17 (seven years ago) link
I was kind of looking forward to a game 5 and the Cueto/Bumgarner two-headed monster taking on the Cubs (obv. MadBum was coming in to save that if they had a lead).
Really only Zobrist's ball was hit hard in that inning, so yeah, maybe Bochy should have left one of his guys in to get settled.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link
This bit from Schoenfield's column really blew my mind:
We've never seen this happen before -- at least not in the postseason. Only three times in playoff history had a team rallied from a three-run deficit in the ninth inning, and all three of those games, amazingly, were in 1986. Those teams (the Angels in Game 4 of the ALCS, the Red Sox in Game 5 of the ALCS and the Mets over the Astros in Game 6 of the NLCS) all needed extra innings to pull off a win.
