Wow. Missed the noms. No Idris Muhammed? Might need to have to submit a second list with the missing albums

octobeard, Monday, 10 October 2016 22:29 (seven years ago) link

This is really hard! Apart from a small number of albums that I can honestly say I've spent a lot of time with, I mostly know singles and other bits and pieces from a bunch of things. Not sure I've ever listened to a full album by the Temptations! Or The Isley Brothers! Or Ashford & Simpson!

No time like the present!

Wow. Missed the noms.

Serious question: how does one miss a thread that was in Site New Answers for four straight weeks, usually in the top 50 results? I left links in some of the biggest polling threads and in a couple relevant soul threads. Is there anything else I can do to make this thing known to people? Hack the server and put up a banner on every page maybe?

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 05:54 (seven years ago) link

Whoa that is one big list...I don't even know where to start

I considered nominating a couple of his albums, but in the end I decided voting for (mostly) instrumental jazz-funk isn't in the spirit of this poll. I don't think I'll vote for pure disco either, as much as I love it. We already had a ballot poll for disco.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 06:26 (seven years ago) link

I find I'm doing the same thing, more or less subconscious: after I put together a very quick first list, I noticed I had included only a few albums from the second half of the decade.
My ballot is going to be 90% soul, also because I've found that funk isn't really my thing.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 08:29 (seven years ago) link

We already had a ballot poll for disco?

simmel, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 10:54 (seven years ago) link

Yes, Tuomas did. One of the best polls I never participated in - I only got into disco earlier this year :(

Here are the relevant threads:

STRONGEST EMOTION, THE DISCO EXPLOSION: It's the Grand ILM Disco Poll nomination thread (nomination time ends on Friday, November 1st)

ILM Disco Poll campaigning thread

...AND THE BEAT GOES ON! The GRAND ILM DISCO POLL results are revealed!

Post your disco poll ballots here

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 11:25 (seven years ago) link

Oh yeah, remember that one. But we didn't poll albums then.

simmel, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 11:46 (seven years ago) link

Yes, I will throw votes to some disco albums this time for that reason, but expect my ballot to skew towards soul.

No funk. Cosmic Slop has run thousands* of polls about funk on here.

*I may be exaggerating slightly for effect

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 11:54 (seven years ago) link

Edd Hurt, I just noticed that 5up3rf1y is listed twice on your ballot. You can submit a new ballot, or give me a title to replace it with.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 13:53 (seven years ago) link

Turn This Mutha Out would be perfect for this poll, and would have been in my top 3-5.

I've been fairly present here in the last month but somehow missed the noms thread. Also we did already cover disco, but that included the 80's. I think this poll makes sense in that there's a lot of soul/funk/disco crossover, hopefully the same US disco hits that topped that ballot poll aren't all again picked here.

I just saw a flier for an upcoming local show with the delfonics, blue magic and the drifters. In 2016.

Heez, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 15:28 (seven years ago) link

Two of those three will be on my ballot.

Caston & Majors were mentioned before, but I only heard this last night - with my one-month old son laying on my chest. A perfect combination:

don't sleep on Heatwave, particularly the Hot Property record -- prime soul/disco/funk fusion with great production, and Rod Temperton songwriting from the exact same period he was writing for MJ's Off the Wall.

Idk if I'll be able to vote in this, i could just cobble together a ballot of albums i know well, but that's no fun

― ArchCarrier,

My first list was 165 albums! I left off so many brilliant albums in the end. So excited for the results.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 15 October 2016 19:06 (seven years ago) link

I knocked it down to 100, will send one this weekend

what's the usual number of ballots these days?

simmel, Sunday, 16 October 2016 14:33 (seven years ago) link

I don't know what's usual, but when I did the Sonic Youth poll three years ago 43 people voted. Now I'd be very happy if we get to 25.
I have already received 13 ballots, with at least three ballots still coming in.

70s Soul & Funk not that popular on ILX shock

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 16 October 2016 16:20 (seven years ago) link

not enough synths?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 16 October 2016 16:20 (seven years ago) link

70s Soul and Funk TRACKS a very big thing with me. It was the prospect of coming up with 25 albums that threw me off.

Not a diss on this poll, mind you--I'm looking forward to the results, mainly for the purposes of my education.

70s Soul & Funk not that popular on ILX shock

― Cosmic Slop,

The Motown and disco polls got got turn outs. Also, There's a Riot Goin' On did win the 70s poll back in the day. Curtis came close in the alternative 70s poll a few years ago too.

I think maybe the time to vote could have been a bit longer? A week isn't really a long time.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 16 October 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

The Motown and disco polls got got turn outs.

tracks poll?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 16 October 2016 17:49 (seven years ago) link

ime of running polls most people leave voting til the last minute so chances are a 2 or 3 week voting period would mean the 13 ballots so far wouldnt come in until the last few days.
People always put voting off until as late as possible.

the recent metal poll had 2 months voting period and 80% of votes came in the last 5 days

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 16 October 2016 17:52 (seven years ago) link

Plus, since we started with a nominations list that was more or less complete, you could say you had five weeks to put a ballot together and vote. I'll divide things differently next time, I think.

Anyway, one more ballot was sent in during the last hour (by a user whose name I don't recognize, so hi!). Less than 12 hours to go...

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 16 October 2016 18:14 (seven years ago) link

I will vote, but being busy has meant I'll only vote for albums I've heard before - and only for albums I've enjoyed as full albums, which isn't the way I know some artists best.

Het schaduwkabinet reshuffle (seandalai), Sunday, 16 October 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

sleeve, Monday, 17 October 2016 01:52 (seven years ago) link

I would definitely vote if we had another week or so, didn't get a chance to listen to much new stuff.

But if not I'll just send in a 10 album ballot or something

Ok, I quit dicking around and sent in a ballot. I couldn't decide between one and two (both by the same artist), so I consider it a virtual tie--gave the points to the one I think might not place as high
