God, we're about to go down 2-0 having only given up four runs.

clemenza, Saturday, 15 October 2016 22:38 (seven years ago) link

Hopeless.

Forget about Bauer, they should have started Miller in game 3.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 15 October 2016 22:38 (seven years ago) link

The idea on talk radio the before this series started was that our offense was back to something resembling last year. No--we had one big game and one big inning against Texas. We remain mired in the same slump we've been in for the rest of that series, for the wild card, and for all of September. (Don't mean to take anything away from Cleveland's stellar pitching.)

brownie, Sunday, 16 October 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link

do these playoffs feel more broken than usual or am i just imagining things are different? if cleveland and LAD both win there'll be like 40% of a single actual big league rotation between them.

and beyond that there just seems to be a lack of strong teams this year. like there's the cubs, who are freakishly good at everything, and then every other team has glaring weaknesses. i guess the red sox were pretty balanced. but the giants, orioles, rangers just weren't very good, and the nats and mets and aforementioned teams are broken, and the dodgers aren't built to win championships anyway in this era of the specialist. and then there's a blue jays, who seem like the iffiest team of too-olds and too-youngs.

idk, just feels like the cubs and sox are the only teams that 'feel' like a contender

qualx, Sunday, 16 October 2016 00:10 (seven years ago) link

cubs are super stacked obv
sox didnt/dont have pitching i trust
jays/tribe are decent teams
dodgers are def kinda broken rn but wont be shocked if theyre competitive w cubes

johnny crunch, Sunday, 16 October 2016 00:18 (seven years ago) link

sox were 8th in pitching WAR, had porky and price (and apparently wright if they made the ALCS) and at least a hypothetically great pen. not the best but not horrible, enough to say they're a balanced team

qualx, Sunday, 16 October 2016 00:29 (seven years ago) link

@MLBastian
Bauer brought his drone to the press conference. Said his passion for them was fueled by his love of Star Wars (speeder bikes on Endor).

Have I ever told ILX my stories of working at WKNR and getting to listen to all of Hamilton and Score's off-air convos?

GUNSHOW POOPHOLE (Phil D.), Monday, 17 October 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

Although my favorite Hamilton thing was actually an on-air one. Tribe was playing the Yankees in NY, and at one point during the game, Hamilton said something to the effect of, "We're here at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. And I have to tell you, Herb, I would no sooner bring my family here than I'd bring them to Harlem."

I have never seen that many phone lines light up that quickly.

Andy K, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:16 (seven years ago) link

Would have been a good catch, not "spectacular," and I think he should have had it.

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:17 (seven years ago) link

Yes, let's zoom in on the blood.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:27 (seven years ago) link

Legitimately feel bad for Cleveland (conceding that the injury's self-inflicted--just the plight of their rotation in general). And if Toronto can't take advantage of this, that'll be sad.

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:31 (seven years ago) link

The ball was in and out of Bautista's glove. He should have caught it.

In boxing they have cut men that can close a cut in one minute, Cleveland had three days to stitch or glue up Bauer and couldn't do it? And then they let him start anyway?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:33 (seven years ago) link

Well I think in boxing they allow bandages and the like?

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:35 (seven years ago) link

You're not allowed to have glue on the hand.

GUNSHOW POOPHOLE (Phil D.), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 00:38 (seven years ago) link

We're making Cleveland's pitchers look like they're the 1970 Orioles or something.

It's starting to look like Francona will change pitchers every inning until it's Miller time.

Four solid shutdown pitches by Stroman.

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 01:57 (seven years ago) link

Stroman has pitched pretty good but lordy they clubbed the two pitches he hung.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 01:59 (seven years ago) link

Big boy was hustling.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link

Gibbons pulled his SP an inning too late as per his usual. He's now rocking a "I think we're fucked now" look in the dugout for the first time this postseason.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 02:13 (seven years ago) link

i can understand that ron darling is tired of saying 'postseason' but that doesn't mean it's okay to say 'the post'

mookieproof, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 02:14 (seven years ago) link

Miller's not available? Confused.

Coco Crisp with the biggest catch of the series.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 02:54 (seven years ago) link

I guess I shouldn't be stunned after the Boston sweep, but I am.

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 03:13 (seven years ago) link

What's the most anemic post-season series ever for an offense? '66 Dodgers?

clemenza, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 03:17 (seven years ago) link

'54 Indians surely?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 03:34 (seven years ago) link

What a pathetic display. 2 runs against a team that lost their starter in the first.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 03:35 (seven years ago) link

What a game!!

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 03:35 (seven years ago) link

'54 Indians scored 9 runs in a 4-game series. We've scored 3 so far, but we're safe--'66 Dodgers scored 2.

Everyone looks awful when you're losing, and we look really, really old right now.

Andrew Miller: 28 batters faced, 18 strikeouts.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 03:43 (seven years ago) link

andrew miller's FIP this postseason coming into tonight was -0.51. (yes, that's a negative sign.) tonight he actually lowered that, with 3 Ks in 1.1 innings for a FIP on the night of -(negative)1.35

k3vin k., Tuesday, 18 October 2016 04:51 (seven years ago) link

please to ilxors can explain to me why Indians and Blue Jays have to play another game? I thought it was just best of 5, and they've already won 3 ?

"Stop researching my life" (Ste), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 13:19 (seven years ago) link

Best of 7. Best of 5 was the last series.

brownie, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 13:24 (seven years ago) link

can't believe Cleveland's going to win 2 titles in a calendar year

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 13:25 (seven years ago) link

Speaking of which...

Don't mean to insult any Cleveland fans, and I may regret saying so, but I'm much rather the Jays have to face the Indians if they advance. So I'll root for them.

mookieproof, Thursday, 20 October 2016 00:13 (seven years ago) link

KC kind of showed that you got a shutdown pen, you can dominate a short series.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 October 2016 02:57 (seven years ago) link

Most depressing Jays post-season series since they got swept by the Twins in '91 (endpoint of their underachieving years).

Actually yeah, that's a good reference point. In both cases it should have been an even matchup but the Jays looked completely out of place and were never really in the series.

I was hoping they could at least make an exciting game of it today, but instead they looked terrible at the plate by and large, wasted the few scoring opportunities they had, and got dominated by Cleveland's bullpen yet again.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 20 October 2016 03:31 (seven years ago) link

Miller was unbelievable.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 20 October 2016 04:23 (seven years ago) link

Did he drop his leg kick when he became a full-time reliever?

Can't think of a pitcher with such lousy-to-dominant statistical contrast. I mean... http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millean01.shtml
