I'm also too lazy to look it up, but I'm pretty certain that at least 80% of the artists on your full list were covered by Pitchfork. Maybe not in their end-of-the-year list, but certainly in the album reviews. That's how I got to hear most of these albums. I think I discovered Stylus later on, maybe a year before they closed down.

Lots of good songs here, voted for Wordless Chorus over Fujiya & Miyagi, Isolee, Andrew Bird and The Clientele

I can only be positive that I've heard 4 of these songs

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 15:34 (seven years ago) link

not heard many of these before. That's a good Devendra pick, and the Fat Freddy's Drop track is their best song as far as I know (even though they're a boring band).

I loved and used to listen to the Digitalism and Vitalic tracks all the time back in the day but have no recollection of what they even sound like now. But thanks for the reminder.

Felt Tip 4EVA!!!

I was going to give that Wilderness my vote (I still love that album and it never went stale for me) BUT The Clientele is on the list and I can't lie.

I love the original album version of Bottle Rocket, but if this is 2005, then it's probably the remixed version with Ninja on the vocals which is not nearly as good.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 16:45 (seven years ago) link

What's up with the two different versions of bottle rocket btw? Is it a legal issue of sorts?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 16:57 (seven years ago) link

Broadcast. I'm not much arsed about anything else here.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 17:05 (seven years ago) link

Legal issues due to sample clearances and possibly some changes as a result of reissuing the album on a major label, Columbia, for North American audiences. There's definitely some changes in the mix that I don't think have to with replacing samples. I was kind of obsessed with the Go! Team at the time, so I took notice of these things.

Speaking of different versions, Jamie Lidell's "Multiply (In a Minor Key)" probably would've taken my vote--far superior to the album version.

voted junior senior
that album was so good

― nxd,

It's one of the most underrated albums of all time.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

Yes. That album is one of my favorites of the 2000s.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 19:11 (seven years ago) link

I like the first album fine but that was a massive step up. I was so disappointed how little reaction it got. There's at least five songs on there that should have been as big as Move Your Feet.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

It's been years since I heard that Le Volume Courbe record... I'm really getting into it again... I was thinking it sounds like some sort of Cocorosie and Hope Sandoval hybrid, and turns out Hope herself features in two songs... no idea if I already knew that but I completely forgot about it.

the answer is definitely "poney pt 1". i wish he had quit after that EP, tbh.

runner up: broadcast. great album

i like the ada ok too but it's prob my least favorite on blondie. another great album.

brimstead, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 20:32 (seven years ago) link

poney's from like 2000 or something in any case

brimstead, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 20:33 (seven years ago) link

ahhh "boney m down" is great too. downtempo tropical disco.. the live (non-sampled) drums and the overall sound really set it apart from yer average cocktail lounge electronica stuff that clogs up today's bargain bins.

brimstead, Tuesday, 18 October 2016 20:35 (seven years ago) link

I still really love that first Wilderness record - although that particular track probably wouldn't be in my top 5 off it! Fly Further to See still makes me damn near levitate.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Tuesday, 18 October 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

Agreed, though End of Freedom always felt the most powerful.

That whole album is great, why didn't I put it in my top 10 albums list upthread? I swear it was there... I think that was the actual album in there and not Devendra now that I think about it... I even bought it on vinyl and I only spend that amount of money on albums I love. Anyhoo... it's a very rewarding if you're patient or maybe high? I've never listened to it on drugs tbh... at any rate you have to be relaxed while listening to it. They do this trick almost in every track were they settle for a gorgeous loop with little variation and then they add layers of arrangements that change the whole mood of the track and sends it to outer space. I love their work as separate entities but I think this is the most concise album they've done together or apart.

I really liked that Fiery Furnaces grandma album at the time. I should listen to it again.
