yep, we've all heard mac plus by now

clouds, Monday, 7 November 2016 13:33 (seven years ago) link

i find myself generally less interested in vaporwave than i am in the stuff vaporwave gets its inspiration from, particularly as a lot of vaporwave doesn't seem to actually do much with its source material. here's a good mix of '80s library music i've been enjoying recently:

IMO that's the punchline of the Macintosh Plus album - the source material is almost just as "vaporwave" as the album itself.

Been wondering about the 情報デスクVIRTUAL album; how much editing is done there exactly?

frogbs, Monday, 7 November 2016 19:06 (seven years ago) link

i like this mix

yeah but on the other hand, i appreciate 'instrumental edits + dash of fx' stuff like the Computer Dreams album. can't really take most of the stuff that keeps the vocals (although a lot of it ends up sounding like lost Tears For Fears tracks which is kind of cool)

i read somewhere (maybe on this thread) that the 情報デスクVIRTUAL album is sourced entirely from some Sega Saturn game.

thanks for posting that 80s library mix, btw, exactly the kind of stuff i've been wanting to dive into.. search: "Silicum" by Claude Larson (not on youtube unfortunately, rest of the album is wack, imo)

brimstead, Tuesday, 8 November 2016 18:51 (seven years ago) link

I think the Laserdisc Visions - New Dreams Ltd. album may be the one you're thinking of. Not just one game but several.

I recently d/l'd a cassette rip and it's a bit different - there is what sounds like Japanese talk radio running throughout the whole thing. Pretty cool.

that the one with a shopping mall on the front cover? can't remember it's name :/

The n mesh hallucinations album is a trip. I might be able to do with fewer tv interludes but overall it's very good.

calstars, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:29 (seven years ago) link

yeah but hearing the old Whatchamacallit ad all chopped n' screwed up is definitely worth it all

Is there a silver spoons drop on there somewhere?

ESPRIT 空想 kicks out the hams

calstars, Saturday, 26 November 2016 03:21 (seven years ago) link

re-reading that bandcamp article now and I'm even more confused, I don't really know what vaporwave is or isn't anymore

like Blank Banshee, who I think is great, seems only tangentially related to something like Floral Shoppe or FSV - not a huge difference between Banshee and say, Major Lazer, except BB uses Donkey Kong Country samples?

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 17:01 (seven years ago) link

been enjoying this over the last couple of days

sorta like a late 90s pop version of hit vibes by saint pepsi

ESPRIT 空想 kicks out the hams

been listening to George Clanton's other stuff over the last few weeks and he's a legitimately talented dude, he's like the son of Dave Gahan

indeed, I guess I kinda prefer the more vaporwave-adjacent stuff these days

fuckin' lol @ that "girls only" cover though

frogbs, Friday, 9 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

dude has a cassette with that stuff on it available. I do have a Walkman but am I really going to pull it out to rock out to some digital analog jams? Suppose it's possible.

calstars, Friday, 9 December 2016 21:10 (seven years ago) link

virtua.zip was just remastered with some bonus tracks which effectively double the length of it, it's a proper album now

https://espritfantasy.bandcamp.com/album/virtua-zip

kind of disappointed I missed out on the blue splatter vinyl, was gonna get myself one but then they sold out, like everything else on the site

I dig the lead harmonies here, they sound like tortoise's night air :

https://vektroid.bandcamp.com/track/odysseus-outdoor-mall

That whole album is pretty great

calstars, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

yessss I love that track

that album really is to me the end-all-be-all of that particular aspect of vaporwave, it's so kitschy and kinda awful in some ways, then there are some moments of real beauty out of nowhere. and though I have no clue where any of it is sampled from, the notion that actual humans played this music seems weird to me, since it feels so dead inside.

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

Word. I can't help but wonder about the origins as I listen. It's just slightly distracting from my full enjoyment of the tracks. Auditory uncanny valley. Like the copyright on the source shit is so unknown that by all intents it now belongs to Ramona. She's a sonic squatter.

calstars, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

Looks like Esprit is playing Shea in New York on the 15th. Any local vapor heads want to try to meet up and go?

calstars, Monday, 2 January 2017 22:14 (seven years ago) link

that would be awesome to go to - his live stream on twitch was really good, I've watched it several times

one thing I've come to love about this genre is how it evolves so quickly like those oddball meme groups on facebook, where stuff gets immediately run into the ground in amusing ways, with everyone trying to outdo each other all the time. I can't think of another genre that would produce something like this, for example.

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 18:00 (seven years ago) link

mmm. i wonder to what extent eating oneself is merely an externalization of self-loathing, and am suspicious of the impulse.

― a but (brimstead)

thinking less would prolly be healthier :)

thing is i _can_ think of other genres that would produce something like blank goofee, because meow the jewels is a thing. and at least part of vaporwave's precis seems to be to expose the empty rotted heart of consumerism. sorry if i'm breaking kayfabe by talking about the tension between that and "for the lulz", but that tension exists and it's a lot of what drives vaporwave.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 January 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link

well there you go. I'm sure the self-cannibalization is all over the place but I've not really seen any genre do this sort of thing to the extent vaporwave does. That Nmesh album ending with a vaporized remix of Fantano's infamous review of Floral Shoppe, for example. I feel like the genre is constantly fucking with people who take it too seriously, though most of its popular artists are obviously dedicating a big portion of their life to making it. It's like an entire genre where every artist is The Residents.

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:01 (seven years ago) link

i kind of hate "ha ha only serious" the way mormons hate bigamy. there's already a fascist offshoot of vaporwave- i think it's called "fashwave"- and I've seen this dialectic play out in so many forms before on the Internet. The fascists always win.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link

guess I shouldn't be surprised. most of the vaporwave artists I follow on Twitter seem to be cool people, at least

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link

fashwave is an offshoot of synthwave not vaporwave, also it is just a couple of yokels on twitter, not much of a "thing"
