I've been a Lonergan evangelist for years IRL to absolutely no avail, but his new one seems to be catching on judging by the multiple people who've surprisingly brought it up in conversation lately.

I presumed, falsely, that Yoga Hosers was a Morbsism for something like, I dunno, The Neon Bible.

On that JW list, I'm curious about Tickled, mostly because it keeps coming up on Tom Scharpling's show. It sounds...deeply uncomfortable.

Also, I just realized that I forgot to PVR Roar when TCM aired it recently. Expecting far more of an intriguing novelty than an actual good film anyway.

BEST SCREENPLAY: Kenneth Lonergan for "Manchester by the Sea"

Manchester is the first Lonergan film where the directing might be underrated.

On Toni Erdmann, which I hadn't heard of until today (though I've seen Everyone Else), I'm having trouble reconciling these two things:

We had this discussion on his FB wall. He loved it, which shows how useless "overrated" is as taxonomy.

Manchester's a better film than Moonlight, but I understand why the latter's beloved.

Toni Erdmann is absolutely great. And that it's a 162 min long comedy is just one of the paradoxical things that make it so good.

I liked La La Land OK but so many modern musicals are stuck between tradition and modernity.

And the completely modern ones (a la Once) suck even worse

And here are the Broadcast Critics Choice nominations. As usual I'd say the nominations race is wrapped up.

And, as usual, the critics groups most whorily vested in being accurate predictors for Oscar nods don't bother to wait for the Scorsese.
