For those who haven't heard the jurgen paape before and loved it: if you're interested in hearing more house and techno from the 00s here's the ilxor poll results for top 110 electronic tracks of the 00s:

interesting results as always, listening to this playlist and feel "Danger! High Voltage" got robbed.

I like LCD Soundsystem as much as the next guy but I don't get the sonic appeal of losing my edge

niels, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 07:08 (seven years ago) link

speaking as someone who voted for it, its more about its lyrics/humour than its "sonic appeal"

I don't mind these results as i like all 4 songs in the top but would have preferred:

Jurgen > Missy > Knife > LCD

I know the namedropping section that begins on the "have you seen my records?" it's meant to be satirical on "Losing my Edge" but those are frankly great artists and would be proud to have them in my collection. Is he trying to make people like me ashamed? It has sort of the opposite effect.

He also forgot to quote "Cardboard Lamb" by Crash Course in Science which seems to be the musical inspiration (bordering on rip-off) behind the song:

Guitars also could be a reference (or another rip-off? No idea if James Murphy ever mentioned the influence) to Killing Joke - change, a band he also doesn't mention.

I know it's not the most creative riff but there's also the drum break + guitar thing present on LME and considering the kind of band that LCD is, I don't think any of their music is accidental or coincidential ripping off but carefully chosen hommage.

The chance of hearing the inferior re-recorded versions of 'So weit wie noch nie' before the original are pretty high on Spotify (which doesn't differentiate between them currently) :(

nashwan, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 11:26 (seven years ago) link

I fell so hard for "All My Friends" in '07 that I sometimes forget how annoying I used to find James Murphy. A relisten confirms: "Losing My Edge," like "Daft Punk Are Playing At My House," is snarky, exclusionary and nowhere near as witty as it thinks it is. Why people hate hipsters, basically.
