Probably "Rain Dance" but I'll listen just to be sure. Such a great album.

The whole album is great, but "Rain Dance" still sounds like the future.

I accidentally voted for Hidden Shadows. Should've been Rain Dance. But I love this goddamn album.

hidden shadows sounds like a pimp walk where the pimp leans so far he looks like he's going to fall over every few steps, but then snaps right back to

I need to read teh book on the Mwandishi band still.
I picked up a few of the live sets by the band a while back so hope i still have them. Pretty open ended but I think all the ones I got were before they were heavily augmented with electronics.
there's a few live videos around of the main bandhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lTimyz9T7k
― Stevolende, Friday, 5 February 2021 12:47 (three years ago) link
That book was particularly good describing not only the band's musical changes, but also the business problems that led to Hancock disbanding them.
The Mwandishi band might be my favourite fusion group, but the sound of Headhunters just puts me off. Sextant started to go in that synth direction, "Hornets" gets on my nerves pretty quickly.

Got to learn not to postpone purchases from Book Depositary. Always seem to miss great reductions if I do. Just missed getting the Gluck for €20.Found a coupon that did take a little off it though but goshdarn missed the bargain.Well I'll have it next week hopefully and then I can let it float around the bed or read it eventually or something. Then buy the Miles Davis Lost Quintet etc book or something.

Just wanted to let those of you who have a 5.1 multichannel speakers know that the quadraphonic version of this has been reissued on SACD, and it sounds kinda amazing! Some of 1970s quadraphonic albums I've listened to are kinda lazily mixed or use the four channels merely as a novelty (sounds circling around from the speaker to speaker etc.), but with this one they clearly put some thought into the 4 channel mix - the spatial effects on "Rain Dance" especially are really cool without drawing too much attention away from the playing.
I didn't think I could find new ways to appreciate this album after listening to it regularly for over 20 years, but there it is.

consider this bump an extra vote for hidden shadows. how can a music, be that good

For clarity's sake, I heard Head Hunters a while back and liked it a lot without having my mind blown. Sextant a whole different story
― imago, Tuesday, 22 August 2023 16:32 (eight months ago) link
Sextant is the 3rd and last of his Mwandishi line-up so ypu need to listen to the other 2

Crossings can't be a 10/10 as well can it? That'd be outrageous. I can't go around handing out 10s like confetti. But also, why is it this good? It has everything I like about my favourite avant-metal, but it's a jazz fusion album from 1972
― imago, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:35 (eight months ago) link
Mwandishi is probably even better (and the 1st of the trilogy)
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 23 August 2023 22:40 (eight months ago) link
I heard that one earlier! It's great but these two are like, they ran a proof of concept and then set off for the fuckin cosmos

Eddie Henderson's Realization (1973) and Inside/Out (1974) are basically Mwandishi albums, same personnel with Henderson as leader
― Brad C., Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:06 (eight months ago) link
in my personal universe “sextant”, “crossings and “mwandishi” make up a “super session album” in the sense of “bitches brew”
re eddie henderson don’t forget “sunburst”, no herbie but it’s got bennie maupin, buster williams (!!), george duke, bobby hutcherson, julian priester and harvey mason on drums
― the late great, Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:20 (eight months ago) link
i like “realization” a lot, it’s maybe not as gaseous sounding or as nebular as mwandishi but it gets into some sweet modal-spiritual strata east vibes
― the late great, Thursday, 24 August 2023 01:22 (eight months ago) link
magnificent albums
Dont forget the Bennie Maupin - The Jewel In The Lotus

The book You'll Know When You get There by Bob Gluck was a pretty good read.
There are a number of live sets around by the band where they stretch out even further than the studio sets. plus a couple of bits of live footage, one from the Molde festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lTimyz9T7k
and one live in the studio which si a bit longerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xExCa3ybzYAthankyou French tv from the early 70s.
I remember reading about Mwandishi in The Wire when i wasn't very familiar with them and it mentioning some live material I think with teh electronics taht had me salivating and dying to hear it. I did have a load of the live material on my walkman which would turn up at random back when i was listening to music that way daily.
