Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 15 December 2016 14:40 (seven years ago) link

Virus sounds like some sort of goth rock so far.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 15 December 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link

I wish I could get into Virus, because I am generally first in line for anything Carl-Michael Eide does

Dominique, Thursday, 15 December 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link

It's growing on me.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 15 December 2016 14:53 (seven years ago) link

ya it took me 3 listens for it to click. all about those basslines

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 15 December 2016 14:54 (seven years ago) link

its not like it doesnt sound like previous Virus albums so I assume imago and sund4r hadnt heard them before?

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 15:26 (seven years ago) link

had only heard them after the extreme metal...wait was it the 2015-present day poll....one of the polls this year

imago, Thursday, 15 December 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

I assume imago and sund4r hadnt heard them before

I hadn't, you're right.

blood incantation's starspawn is really growing on me

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 December 2016 15:34 (seven years ago) link

brad I think it was you who first alerted us to Anicon's Exegeses? I caught them on election night and now they are seared into my memory (and list) forever

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 December 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link

i have no idea what that is

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 December 2016 15:37 (seven years ago) link

oh wait, i do, but i completely forgot for some reason. great record

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 December 2016 15:38 (seven years ago) link

Cast a ballot for seven albums because I didn't want to listen to any more 2016 metal albums. I'll definitely listen to Oneida/Rhys Chatham when I get a chance, though.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 15 December 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

thanks, I think we're up to 15 ballots in with a day and a bit to go

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 16:37 (seven years ago) link

None of the regular lurkers have voted yet for some reason so if you're reading please vote.

I usually put lurkers welcome in the title but surely that wouldnt put anyone off because I didn't this time.

oh cronos smith still voted whoever he/she is. Would love to know who it is

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 16:38 (seven years ago) link

I voted :)

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 15 December 2016 16:44 (seven years ago) link

youre not a lurker. everyone invite friends to vote if you want

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:14 (seven years ago) link

I was just telling you I voted, bad timing on my part I guess

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

non-lurkers fuck off

imago, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link

Im trying hard to transition into lurker-ness

sushi and the banh mis (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

Anyways, big news from me is Forgotten Spell, which for all its weirdo rep, mostly for the frantic off time drumming that shows up here and there, is just a massively epic metal album. Totally killer.

Listening to Schammasch rn, not as into it, but its pretty good. I'm halfway thinking about putting together a tracks ballot for the main poll now just so I can put "Metanoia" on it... (...but I think this is finally the year I hold fast to my abstaining impulses wrt to that)

sushi and the banh mis (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link

Ok and "Above the Stars of God" just came on, second disc of Triangle is p much the sweet spot, huh, Kerr?

sushi and the banh mis (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:20 (seven years ago) link

oh btw I reiterate this pledge if anyone feels up for an extra layer of tomfoolery

FYI everyone I will be offering a **special metal mystery prize** to whoever most accurately guesses the top 20

*N. Americans only, fuck intercontinental postage

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:30 (seven years ago) link

yeah most favour the 2nd disc tho the 3rd ambient disc has almost as many fans
xp

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link

i hope you vote george. under 20 ballots with only one day to go

Any ballot 1 album to 50 albums welcome

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

Im not getting up early to check out a bunch of '16 metal albums only to not fill out a ballot ;)

You think seandalai will do his usual thing, where voting actually ends whenever he wakes up Saturday morning? All of a sudden I have to work Friday night, too :-/

sushi and the banh mis (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

quite possibly but if he's busy he might want to get the results done straight away how he used to (as did glenn before him) so its maybe best not to second guess as I really dont know.

We are on a strict schedule and need to get the rollout done before everyones packed up for holidays

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Hey did I rep the Volur album? Weird, folky doom prog with bass/drums/violin lineup, male and female vocals.

rudy githyanki (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

Nope but I think you just did..

Please more recs as clearly most people still have to vote so boosting might help!

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:20 (seven years ago) link

Just finished a long drive listening to Metallica and then the Desaster album twice - I already voted but mayb I should've placed the latter even higher. Clearly the best thrash record of the year, and playing it back to back with Hardwired (which I do like!) is interesting. Desaster might be a bit younger (and more indebted to Kreator than Bay Area style) but they've still been doing this for 20+ years, and they are so full-on heads-down aggressive and the singer puts in an amazing performance, the producton is so alive, it's really no contest.

Siegbran, Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:28 (seven years ago) link

Hey did I rep the Volur album? Weird, folky doom prog with bass/drums/violin lineup, male and female vocals.

What is THIS? So glad you remembered to rep for it.

The Disir are women, powerful spirits. Some wicked, some good, some benign. Mothers, daughters, lovers, murderers, widows and explorers... The white phantom appears as a vision through the forest and stills the hearts of men.

Great concept. Not enough terrifying women so far.

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link

I can think of one

imago, Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:45 (seven years ago) link

<3

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:45 (seven years ago) link

Seriously though, this Völur is stunning. Every doom release should heavily feature piercing violins.

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 21:52 (seven years ago) link

holy shit this is indeed kind of extraordinary

imago, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:40 (seven years ago) link

Just voted, managed a 24-album ballot although there are definitely some things towards the end I think are just 'OK with standout moments' and/or which I need to revisit.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:41 (seven years ago) link

Not enough terrifying women so far.

DO check out that Mutterlein album if you haven't!

Every doom release should heavily feature piercing violins.

Couldn't hurt! On the more crusty/black/sludgy side Blood Folke are pretty good and have viola.

rudy githyanki (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:57 (seven years ago) link

I did in fact check out the Mutterlein earlier. It had a great sound, but didn't quite resonate with my primal self like this Völur is doing.

Will certainly give Blood Folke a listen too. Running out of time!

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 23:04 (seven years ago) link

Oh that Blood Folke is from a couple of years ago, btw, just thought I'd mention it!

rudy githyanki (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 15 December 2016 23:15 (seven years ago) link

Shame it doesn't count. It sounds lovely

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 23:19 (seven years ago) link

what the actual hell is this forgotten spell stuff

yet to work out how much i like it but it's unlike anything else

imago, Thursday, 15 December 2016 23:34 (seven years ago) link

Feel like I'm just stating a lot of opinions with little substance behind them, but I'm loving Forgotten Spell. It's completely mad.

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link

obviously i like it very much, i cannot dislike or even feel neutral about anything this completely unhinged

imago, Thursday, 15 December 2016 23:43 (seven years ago) link

it's also making me think that i could make a metal album

but would it be this kickass

imago, Friday, 16 December 2016 00:11 (seven years ago) link

Voted

Steampig, Friday, 16 December 2016 00:25 (seven years ago) link

This would seriously be threatening the very top of my list had I heard it a couple of weeks earlier. Thank you ultros and DAM for highlighting it. Pure chaos. Weirdly inspiring.

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 16 December 2016 00:46 (seven years ago) link

yeah uh this was, in the end, the most metal album

imago, Friday, 16 December 2016 00:56 (seven years ago) link

i voted, with my somewhat uninformed ballot of 13 unholy albums

nomar, Friday, 16 December 2016 01:14 (seven years ago) link

Völur is pretty cool. Doom metal with no guitar is a weird idea.

jmm, Friday, 16 December 2016 01:24 (seven years ago) link

Om!
