I'm amazed this album didn't get nommmed, thought it was an ilm favourite and assumed it was a lock. Should have checked as I'd have thrown it in too

― ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, January 4, 2017 8:41 AM (five hours ago)

Yeah, I was putting my album list together from the final list and just assumed it had been nominated. Two of the KING related songs were picked (one of them by me!) but the album was sadly overlooked. I would have definitely given it some votes. It's a lovely record.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see any mention of the brilliant album by Cellars anywhere. The lead single, Nighttime Girl could well be my favourite song of the year. It's pure earworm and the harmonies on the wordless chorus are everything I love about pop music. https://youtu.be/yPCCioS75jY

Bombino - Timtar
A new discovery for the year. Psychedelic Tuareg goodness. Not dissimilar from Tinariwen, but with a fat, almost reggae-ish lope. Absolutely fantastic

Spotted another double in the tracks list:

Brita - Wrap Your Arms Around Me
Britta Phillips - Wrap Your Arms Around Me

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

Double Britney too ('Slumber Party' twice) which means I was wrong upthread and she only has a mere 5 tracks (yet somehow none of them are 'Clumsy' or 'Hard To Forget Ya' dam, best from her since 'Blackout' for sure)

For a full 5 minutes there I thought we'd somehow forgotten to nominate "We Are King"

seandalai has temporarily extended the nominations period to accomodate slackers, but the grace period ends at midnight UK time. Do that here.

Tomorrow, I'll harangue a mod to update the info in the top of this thread with correct links to finalized master lists for albums and tracks.

Back to campaigning.

Any of the four Kero Kero Bonito tracks nominated is worthy of your vote, but this paean to doing squat, with perfect accompanying video is my favourite.

I've found a better link for concretism's "Beneath the City Streets" on soundcloud (bandcamp had just a 44 second excerpt):

You can also subtract one track from Rihanna's total of ten, since "Nothing Is Promised" has also been nominated as the Mike Will Made-It track it actually is.

Can't believe 4 Underworld tracks were nominated and none of them are 'If Rah'

groovypanda, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 20:35 (seven years ago) link

I guess I could rep on the album I think no one else but me will vote, here's the title track:

Zalys - Fragments of Life

Zalys has made several albums of this kind of deep, droney space ambient, and her new one is not that different from the previous outout, maybe a bit darker... But if you like these kind of beatless, glacial & melody-free cosmic moodz, her music should certainly hit the sweet spot, so it's all good.

Gate's 'Saturday Night Fever' (from The Dead C's Michael Morley) deserves way more love than it is getting. A twisted, fractured, mutant take on the disco classic, all chopped up to pieces. Listen to Hijack, which sounds like Third Eye Foundation with Ian Curtis on vocals and William Basinski behind the wheel.

What album is this?

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 5 January 2017 18:37 (seven years ago) link

Either Corinne Bailey Rae or All Saints, but its a moot point since they both got in under the extended deadline

U2 (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 5 January 2017 18:46 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it was Corinne Bailey Rae. KING worked on four of the songs on the album. It's a lovely record that has now been nominated.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 January 2017 18:54 (seven years ago) link

Biggest discoveries from the nominated albums list for me so far.

Japanese Breakfast - Psychopomp (this is everything I want from indie music in 2017)
Bartosz Kruczynski - Baltic Beat (the title track is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time)
Noname - Telefone (not sure why it took me so long to give this a listen. Amazing production and she has so much personality)
Ngaiire - Blastoma (every year I discover something great that Monotony has recommended. It's a been a good year for mellow R&B)
Mitski - Puberty 2 (this didn't blow me away when I heard it earlier in the year, but hearing all the excellent songs on the playlist made me reconsider. Love it now)

I won't list the songs as I've been through the playlist and found around 80 songs that I'd never heard before that could all make my final tracks list. I always forget what hard work this is.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 January 2017 19:04 (seven years ago) link

I have to rep for Mogwai - Atomic. Their last few albums have been lackluster IMO, but this one is amazing. It runs the gamut from old school post-rock to dark synth prog. Very much worth a vote!

Another album I gotta stan for is Comet Control - Center of the Maze... It's kind of hard to describe. I'd say that it's upbeat psych-pop pretending to be heavy metal. The last track of the album, Artificial Light is especially good and was nominated.

As far as pop music goes, most of the stuff I liked this year is already well known to ILM ppl (Angel Olsen, Mitski, Tegan & Sara), but I never see Amason talked about much and they released one of my favorite tracks of the year, Airport. It has great female-fronted vocals and is extremely catchy. I've listened to it probably almost 100 times this year and it still hasn't gotten old.

Another cool track that I think is a bit obscure is Black Marble - Iron Lung. Really solid indie pop that has a New Order vibe. Another track I should mention is The Ravonettes - Where Are You Wild Horses. They did this thing where they released a new track every month in 2016, and that one is easily the best of them. I really like it.

I'll let imago evangelize for Mesarthim but they are also great: they're very much metal that people who aren't into metal will like.

OK that's my big campaigning post. I might mention more stuff later, but I really wanted to makes sure the above mentioned got some attention.

I would encourage people to listen to Tkay Maidza's album Tkay and particular "Simulation", which is the biggest and most joyous of her singles yet. She placed previously at #38 in the 2014 tracks poll and it would be wonderful to see her in the chart once again!

Sorry to be a humourless twat, but can someone please walk me through the Gaz Coombes joke? I've been vaguely puzzled at it for a year or so. Is it just "lolz indie music"?
