mmm. i wonder to what extent eating oneself is merely an externalization of self-loathing, and am suspicious of the impulse.

thinking less would prolly be healthier :)

thing is i _can_ think of other genres that would produce something like blank goofee, because meow the jewels is a thing. and at least part of vaporwave's precis seems to be to expose the empty rotted heart of consumerism. sorry if i'm breaking kayfabe by talking about the tension between that and "for the lulz", but that tension exists and it's a lot of what drives vaporwave.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 January 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link

well there you go. I'm sure the self-cannibalization is all over the place but I've not really seen any genre do this sort of thing to the extent vaporwave does. That Nmesh album ending with a vaporized remix of Fantano's infamous review of Floral Shoppe, for example. I feel like the genre is constantly fucking with people who take it too seriously, though most of its popular artists are obviously dedicating a big portion of their life to making it. It's like an entire genre where every artist is The Residents.

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:01 (seven years ago) link

i kind of hate "ha ha only serious" the way mormons hate bigamy. there's already a fascist offshoot of vaporwave- i think it's called "fashwave"- and I've seen this dialectic play out in so many forms before on the Internet. The fascists always win.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link

guess I shouldn't be surprised. most of the vaporwave artists I follow on Twitter seem to be cool people, at least

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link

fashwave is an offshoot of synthwave not vaporwave, also it is just a couple of yokels on twitter, not much of a "thing"

"hardvapor" is such unredeemable shit

Going back and forth between 2814 and telepath

calstars, Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:41 (seven years ago) link

I have mixed feelings about the vaporwave trend of building tracks out of slowed down samples of 80s hits. The Eyes Without A Face one is pretty good. The Born in the USA one, not so much.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:44 (seven years ago) link

that's doing it wrong -- the point is to find the song-within-the-song, like the secret instrumental electro tracks that some 80s productions become when you remove the vocals

clouds, Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:48 (seven years ago) link

I agree but I do appreciate the random ultra slowed down "oh (baby)"

calstars, Sunday, 12 February 2017 17:13 (seven years ago) link

i cannot believe that cover art is from 1988!!!

yeah that's great too, but the stuff isn't supposed to be profound necessarily.. reminds me of the argument about how certain disco edits are "pointless" because they don't "add anything" to the original. good edits are usually about dancefloor functionalism not necessarily magical transformation (although it's great and interesting when that happens too).. similarly, the slowed-down 80s hits style is more about a kind of cheap "emotional functionalism" with context/respect getting ripped out/fucked with.. like it's besides the point that one could do these slow-down things on their own PC, the end product is just a product, the vaporwave creator/curator just happened to 'make' it but he's just the puppet in the 80s gods hands...

that probably doesn't make any sense, oh well

a but (brimstead), Sunday, 12 February 2017 19:24 (seven years ago) link

ugh i love "sea is a lady" so much

clouds, Sunday, 12 February 2017 22:28 (seven years ago) link

"dancefloor functionalism" is a subset of "magical transformation" imo

But I'm not sure what "Christian vaporwave" is

calstars, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

Alright, so we got this anonymous demo sent in & it's got like a christian rock theme to it. Now look, Joey & I aren't bible thumpers! We enjoy the riffs but we enjoy the sin too. Heaven does seem very glam-orous so hell yea! Rock on!
