"the rat" but "little house of savages" is better
― Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 6 January 2017 06:55 (seven years ago) link
Looking at this list I think we can say that this year was pretty much rock music's last hurrah. Never again would it dominate charts like this. It had been going for a good sixty years, it had a hell of a run. Anyway, I'm voting for "Take Me Out" but I could've just as easily gone for "The Rat" or "Somebody Told Me" or "Can't Stand Me Now". All great stuff. Where's "Mr. Brightside"? Was that not 2004?
"Since U Been Gone" still sounds like it was made today.
― Mr. Snrub, Friday, 6 January 2017 07:51 (seven years ago) link
Yea "Mr. Brightside" was '04 but I think acclaimed music includes it with '05 singles.
I remember this era lasting a few years past 2004, but I guess everyone has their own perception. 2000-2003 had very few college-rock crossovers. Actual chart toppers were douchey bullshit like Vertical Horizon, Crazy Town, Nickleback. Then suddenly for no apparently reason, 2004-2006 launched a brief era where Top 40 programmers added collegey stuff to their playlists, like "Take Me Out," "Float On," The Killers, Green Day, "Beverly Hills," "Feel Good Inc." It wasn't like "buzz clips" all over again, but the small handful was refreshing. By 2007, the Fueled By Ramen bands were still kicking around Top 40, but Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse were long gone.

Galang vs Heartbeat vs Mushaboom for me.
― boxedjoy, Friday, 6 January 2017 09:32 (seven years ago) link
A sprinkling of good stuff. Annie probably wins. Not crazy about the official version but I LOVE the demo of 'Mushaboom'.

Definitely a weaker list than the previous '00s ones (nos. 32 and 35 are two of my least favourite songs ever) but there's still a fair amount of great stuff here:

Jesus Walks narrowly takes it for me but very close between that and Heartbeat for the bit when the live disco drumming comes in and of course the unabashed sweetness of the vocal melody. Jesus Walks is just wonderful though.

I still love Art Brut, even if the whole project was an extended knowing wink to a particular crowd of arty hipsters.

"Galang" would probably be the most startling song on the list in 2004, but "Heartbeat" is the easiest choice now.

That Walkmen song is good but I never really got how it always beats out all these other singles. Pretty sure it made p4k's top 20 in their 2000s list.
