anyway i should rep for my favorite track of the year:

A-WA - Habib Galbi: 3 israeli sisters (incidentally w/ the last name haim) mix heritage yemenite music w/ electronic + hip-hop influences (youtube music video for 'habib galbi' first Arabic song to go #1 on israeli pop charts)
Noura Mint Seymali - Arbina: amazing singer from Mauritania does Moorish pop w/ her husband on guitars and it's blissful psych desert-blues ('Na Sane' music video)

First read the Dori Freeman blurb as "beautiful appalachian americana about logging" and thought that sounds pretty cool. Longing is a bit played out as a theme but I'll give it a listen.

If I'm going to campaign for one underheard thing this year, it will be Sidibe's mini-LP 'You Got the Luck'. 7 tracks of glorious 80s/90s style pop/r&b from a singer whose voice reminds me at times of Carly Rae and whose musical inclinations draw from Janet and Sade.

I just nominated the whole thing in Albums because I couldn't settle on a single track.

Barli is another find (so far) from the playlist.

I have a theory about Barli, and it's that she previously recorded under the name Ruby Goe, but there are a couple reasons I don't want to state that as fact...

All of Ruby Goe's previous internet presence has been wiped (except for tracks on streaming services).
I don't want to be accused of some "all black women singers look the same to you?!" shit.

But for real, I'm 99.95% sure Barli = Ruby Goe.

Not that it matters much but I'm pretty sure C. Diab's No Perfect Wave first came out in 2015. Actually yeah I even nominated it back then.

Finally finished going through the tracks playlist this morning, lots of great discoveries all the way through, good work everyone! I'm definitely finding it harder to get my ballot down to 25 than in the last couple of years, even with a self-imposed ban on overlaps with my albums list.

MJ Guider - Evencycle (dream techno that takes you up into MIND CONTROL MIND CONTROL MIND CONTROL)

my favorite discovery from the nominations thread was Andrew Pekler's Tristes Tropiques. worth a listen for anyone who's into experimental electronic/ambient music.

sorry "experimental" is a lame descriptor. idk. it's good.

This is what I wrote about Tristes Tropiques:

I saw Pekler’s music described not as “ambient electronic” but as “abstract electronic” and I can’t think of a better descriptor. It’s a broken soundscape that feels vaguely familiar while never settling into place. It’s like a video game with bad draw-in problems; paths and surroundings shift and appear from nothing, are granted solidity, and they fade back to grey mist. Tristes Tropiques is another album I would have given time nor attention to before this year. With a constantly changing present it pulls the attention to the now. No prediction is safe or right or true.

I used to love Pekler's Sad Rockets jazz project, but I haven't listened to him in 15 years, could check this one out.

I love that Hazel English track. My friend Adam went to see her show a few weeks ago and said she was the tiniest person he's ever seen.

"2 bad" is a very pretty track, but putting it at the top of a list just seems gauche. as a rarity it's charming, as an anthem it's cloying

i agree that listing "2 Bad" at the top of the RA poll puts too much of a spotlight on it, but I don't think in general they rep for tracks that could be described as anthems, do they? I really liked the whole 28 min EP that it's from, 2 The Sky

since we're talking about the original track, does anybody know what the string sample is in the gammal mungolian mix of "fuglekongen" is? it's killing me

"2 The Sky" from that Dj Metatron EP is so good. Have that on constant loop.
