Going back and forth between 2814 and telepath

calstars, Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:41 (seven years ago) link

I have mixed feelings about the vaporwave trend of building tracks out of slowed down samples of 80s hits. The Eyes Without A Face one is pretty good. The Born in the USA one, not so much.

that's doing it wrong -- the point is to find the song-within-the-song, like the secret instrumental electro tracks that some 80s productions become when you remove the vocals

clouds, Sunday, 12 February 2017 16:48 (seven years ago) link

I agree but I do appreciate the random ultra slowed down "oh (baby)"

calstars, Sunday, 12 February 2017 17:13 (seven years ago) link

i cannot believe that cover art is from 1988!!!

yeah that's great too, but the stuff isn't supposed to be profound necessarily.. reminds me of the argument about how certain disco edits are "pointless" because they don't "add anything" to the original. good edits are usually about dancefloor functionalism not necessarily magical transformation (although it's great and interesting when that happens too).. similarly, the slowed-down 80s hits style is more about a kind of cheap "emotional functionalism" with context/respect getting ripped out/fucked with.. like it's besides the point that one could do these slow-down things on their own PC, the end product is just a product, the vaporwave creator/curator just happened to 'make' it but he's just the puppet in the 80s gods hands...

that probably doesn't make any sense, oh well

a but (brimstead), Sunday, 12 February 2017 19:24 (seven years ago) link

ugh i love "sea is a lady" so much

clouds, Sunday, 12 February 2017 22:28 (seven years ago) link

"dancefloor functionalism" is a subset of "magical transformation" imo

Finalized the playlist for this thread and threw in the end of 2017 stuff for kicks.

The Eric taxxon is nice
But I'm not sure what "Christian vaporwave" is

calstars, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

Alright, so we got this anonymous demo sent in & it's got like a christian rock theme to it. Now look, Joey & I aren't bible thumpers! We enjoy the riffs but we enjoy the sin too. Heaven does seem very glam-orous so hell yea! Rock on!

a but (brimstead), Monday, 20 February 2017 20:31 (seven years ago) link

is there any good vaporwave with (original) vocals? cuz i've hated every example i've heard so far

nxd, Monday, 20 March 2017 11:03 (seven years ago) link

Yeah that's a good one
Almost could be also included on the synthwave outrun thread

calstars, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 11:13 (seven years ago) link

yeh totally
guess it's the nomenclature that really throws it into vw territory

nxd, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 11:15 (seven years ago) link

man I've been so obsessed with the last track on I'll Try Living Like This, legitimately think it's one of the greatest and most haunting things I've ever heard, then it turns out it's just a mash-up of two songs from Sonic-R. lol.

frogbs, Friday, 31 March 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link

Haha. Amazing track!

Feel like artists like V/vm and plunderphonics in general peaked too soon; they would florish under the vaporwave moniker.

On Some Faraday Beach (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 31 March 2017 22:21 (seven years ago) link

I searched down Mello Mist, an album by dang Olsen that's not on Spotify. Nice as expected and brief. 8 tracks in like 28 minutes which could as well be a single telepath track.

guess this is not quite vaporwave but if i post on the other rolling electronic/techno threads it'll just get buried

and i see that nxd already mentioned them upthread, lol

clouds, Sunday, 16 April 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link

I think some of Vektroid's releases are completely unaltered muzak tunes, not sampled, not looped, just the original song. I don't have a problem with this though

I know this is an old post but I've been thinking about this a bit. I've been listening to the 情報デスクVIRTUAL album quite a bit lately and I decided to listen to the originals (you can find most of them on whosampled.com). They aren't completely unaltered - everything seems to be pitched down 15% or so, there are a few loops, and most of the tracks are excerpts - but for the most part she's just sampling easy listening and New Age records. It isn't even muzak or infomercial stuff, it's like...John Tesh and David Sanborn. The whole thing is like a brilliant prank, attempting to get kids who hang out on /mu/ or reddit digging the same shit they'd make fun of their moms for listening to.

(and yes, I dig the album too)

beautiful

fairly new record from one half of death's dynamic shroud.wmv
https://dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/flight
"The follow up to 2012’s ‘Honeybee’ on Orange Milk, ‘Flight’ is a return to Webster’s progressive rock past with new ideals he has learned from his explorations in dds.wmv, taking the guitar-based experimentalism of the former and integrating the twisted audio manipulation of the latter to create something unique for the artist. Conceptually, it arrives from a similar place as ‘Honeybee’ too, in that HCMJ uses the music as an outlet for his own internal anxieties."

also new on dream catalogue, & very different to the above, ends with an almost wolfgang voigt esque movement
https://dreamcatalogue.bandcamp.com/album/integrating-clouds

away from dream - probs belongs on the future funk thread but i guess it goes down here too, hit vibes vibes obvs
