the song that muse ripped off is so hilariously ripped off and I had not noticed
― Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 10 February 2017 02:09 (seven years ago) link
wait, what
― I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Friday, 10 February 2017 02:21 (seven years ago) link
'starlight' rips 'the crystal lake'
― Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 10 February 2017 02:36 (seven years ago) link
oh yeah kind of. not as egregious as some but there's certainly the same mouthfeel
― I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Friday, 10 February 2017 03:16 (seven years ago) link
Starlight is definitely more caffeinated, but the piano bit is similar to the gyitar bit and those arpeggios...
― Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 10 February 2017 03:23 (seven years ago) link
album is quite dear <3

how are the melodies?

It's not their strongest album but the highs (the preview tracks + This Is The Part) are delightful. Turns out A Lost Machine is kind of amazing
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:02 (seven years ago) link
I like the first tracks very much. They remind me of the first time I heard grandaddy and excitedly played Sophtware/Sumday all night through headphones on an iRiver mp3 player. 'A Lost Machine' is not working for me yet.
― Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link
Oh yeah the first three are great. Whole album growing with each listen

Maybe Evermore is the standout?
was definitely the immediate standout for me. I am open to others growing on me, though, as that's usually how this works.
― Sufjan Grafton, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:35 (seven years ago) link
Eight now my thinking is it doesn't need the two tracks with long titles, everything else is golden

Not a single standout on this great great album for me. Such an amazing hangover of an album. After the sophtware died, and they tried and failed to sober up, and this is what happened. It's like getting a blue screen after a hard reset. Head aching and hung over on the porch, in the scorching sun. Passed out in a Datsun. I will defend this album to the teeth.

(that was abt Sumday btw)
― Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 3 March 2017 23:55 (seven years ago) link
oh. new one is good.
― akm, Saturday, 4 March 2017 16:22 (seven years ago) link
new one is pretty good! "Evermore" is instantly one of their best songs
― ciderpress, Saturday, 4 March 2017 18:11 (seven years ago) link
it's nice iin that this album just feels like a logical next album, not like some big reunion thing after years with loads of expectations
― akm, Saturday, 4 March 2017 18:33 (seven years ago) link
"you grieve like a freeway tree" is a pretty great line
― calstars, Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:21 (seven years ago) link
album kind of sounds like deserter's songs vol II
― calstars, Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:26 (seven years ago) link
much, much better than that
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link
Sumday was the first Grandaddy album I disliked. Just listened again and don't get it. The Sophtware Slump was their high point for me.
― Duke, Sunday, 5 March 2017 21:11 (seven years ago) link
New album is mediocre at best. 'Evermore' a sordid attempt at grasping at past heights. Saying it's Deserter's Songs II and much, much better than that is just challops.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:12 (seven years ago) link
when have they ever used such krautrock keyboards before??
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:14 (seven years ago) link
anyway, all of their albums are growers
― an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link
It's totally depressing somehow
― calstars, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link
I guess that's the charm
Yeah, I am not getting the hype for the new album at all. I can't find one memorable song on there. Sumday is enjoyable, but was a massive step down after Under The Western Freeway and The Sophtware Slump.
― kitchen person, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link
"Krautrock keyboards", really?
I wished much better for these guys instead of this hook-free, dread-free, forgettable return.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 5 March 2017 23:51 (seven years ago) link
it is good that is all yeesh you whiners
