speaking of, i am SHOCKED that we're not hearing calls for pence's resignation given his use of a private email server while he was governor. very very surprising that no one seems to care

WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union has today demanded documents from four federal agencies concerning a potential executive order that would sanction religiously motivated discrimination against LGBT people, members of minority faiths, women, and people seeking reproductive health care.

“The American people deserve to know whether this administration plans to protect the rights of all Americans or whether it will sanction discrimination,” said Louise Melling, deputy legal director for the ACLU. “The ACLU fights every day to defend religious freedom, but religious freedom does not mean the right to discriminate against or harm others. If President Trump signs an executive order that authorizes discrimination against women and LGBT people, we will see him in court.”

The Freedom of Information Act requests were filed with the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, Justice, and Treasury and seek any communications regarding the drafting of an executive order that would attempt to grant broad religious exemptions to organizations from rules barring discrimination. A draft version of the order leaked last month....

oh, nbd! it's just funny to see how conservatives don't even attempt to avoid the whiff of hypocrisy when the shoe is on the other foot.

That's part of the problem, but the bigger problem is the lying and the evading and the perjuring. So you met with the Russian ambassador, even prior to the election. So you do it on the record, and you admit to it when you're asked about it under oath, and you explain what you discussed. If you continue to act guilty, it's probably safe to assume that you're probably guilty even if we don't yet know exactly what you're guilty of.

Exactly, the whole administration is acting so strange that it's hard not to suspect that something big is amiss here. I mean what is this now, four resignations and one recusal from people that the administration still says "did nothing wrong"? If Sessions truly has no idea what they're talking about, as he claimed two nights ago, why is he amending the record now, after being caught?

frogbs, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:38 (seven years ago) link

people born into money, like donald trump, should never have to answer for anything. the more money, the more innocent. the awkwardness in all this is a sign of just how innocent donald trump ultimately is. now let's cut some taxes

Why isn't Yam itching to police the Deep State?

The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board... was created by Congress in 2004, at the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, to help the executive branch balance national security priorities with individual rights. After Bush administration officials heavily edited PCLOB’s first report, one member resigned, and Congress in 2007 turned it into an independent agency and expanded its writ to include oversight of congressional action. Still, the board remained obscure; some members of Congress seemed unaware of its existence even as documents from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden produced more privacy scandals.

PCLOB is supposed to have five members, no more than three of whom come from the same political party; to employ a full-time chairperson; to have regular access to the 17 intelligence agencies; and to publish unclassified versions of its evaluations of U.S. espionage powers.

But with just one part-time board member left, after another member’s term ended last week, the agency has very few formal powers to police the so-called “deep state” until President Trump nominates a new board, the emails reveal. Without the statutory quorum of three members, PCLOB “may not initiate new advice or oversight projects” or offer advice to the intelligence community, according to a list drawn up by Jen Burita, PCLOB’s public affairs and legislative officer, and shared by email with several congressional staffers who had raised questions about the impact of the attrition among board members.

Again, it's the full monty: No. I mean, I don't recall. I mean, yes, but I don't recall what we talked about. I mean, yes, I do recall what we talked about, but I don't recall specifically, just that it wasn't important. But I can't recall if it was important or not. Oh, and these are the people who were with me, though maybe they weren't.

I would love to see him and Page together. It would be all:

Couple more GOP endorsed call for tax returns, which means the yelling at town halls and making calls must be working.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:59 (seven years ago) link

would we be able to understand his tax returns, without getting all jealous of his success?

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:01 (seven years ago) link

Maybe he is hiding his tax returns so that we won't feel bad about not being as rich as him. Maybe he is just being considerate.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:22 (seven years ago) link

He's not hiding them to cover up the fact that he's nowhere near as successful as he makes out is he? I thought he was bankrupt several times over. or was that just a temporary excuse whenever he could get away with it.

* A U.S. civilian was personally awarded by Vladimir Putin the medal of honor "Friend of Russia."

* That same U.S. civilian was so honored while negotiating a multi-billion-dollar oil deal with Russia.

* That same U.S. civilian was a CEO of Exxon.

* That same U.S. civilian with zero diplomat or government experience is now Secretary of State, the boss in charge of all our international diplomatic relations.

* Hours after inauguration, the President erased laws that banned unreported deals by U.S. citizens with other governments.

Does anyone else find this bizarre and under-discussed?

Having seen Richard Painter on a couple of shows over the last couple of days has he got something wrong with his face. Like a stroke at some point or something, seems to not fully inhabit his face and talk out of the side of his mouth and stuff.

Maddow's show today was pretty good for anyone worried that the Russia stuff was gonna run out of steam

turns out the Russian dude who inexplicably paid Trump $100m for a $40m property had been following him around on campaign stops

frogbs, Saturday, 4 March 2017 04:04 (seven years ago) link

This is a reasonably good breakdown of the mansion strong:

http://www.politico.eu/article/donad-trump-and-the-oligarch-russia-dmitry-rybolovlev-house-vladimir-putin-us-presidential-election-america-2016/

Rybolovlev also bought NYC's most expensive apartment for his daughter, turning a $47m profit for the owner, Sandy Weill, a major Clinton donor.

He also sold an $88m Gaugun for $22m, this week - part of a $2bn art collection that he probably overpaid at least 25% for. Some of this was acquired via a front company to hide the real owner. A trust acting on behalf that of his daughter bought 66% of AS Monaco, invested €150m, overpaying for most, in new players and seems to have mostly lost interest in spending huge amount of money over the last few years (although the team is doing well with young players).

The general pattern looks like him being easily parted from his money in questionable deals but the underlying reason is almost certainly a scramble to divest himself of as much cash as possible ahead of a divorce in which his wife was initially awarded £4.5bn. It is probably worth looking in to whether the price advertised matches the actual price paid, or whether there were any kickbacks, but the 'Russia plot' angle is a dead end - he is not thought to be well liked in Russia or part of any inner circle.
