it was mentioned like 50 posts ago now but that Vanity Fair "alt-left" article has been roundly (and correctly) mocked, what a crock

James Wolcott's had his head up his own ass since at least Clinton's first term. One of the most buffoonish hacks around, utterly enraptured by his own "wit."

Probably a Russia spy. I heard.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:56 (seven years ago) link

it's exactly the sort of BS defense that Sessions himself would've torn apart

frogbs, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:57 (seven years ago) link

Couple more GOP endorsed call for tax returns, which means the yelling at town halls and making calls must be working.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:59 (seven years ago) link

would we be able to understand his tax returns, without getting all jealous of his success?

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:01 (seven years ago) link

Maybe he is hiding his tax returns so that we won't feel bad about not being as rich as him. Maybe he is just being considerate.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:22 (seven years ago) link

He's not hiding them to cover up the fact that he's nowhere near as successful as he makes out is he? I thought he was bankrupt several times over. or was that just a temporary excuse whenever he could get away with it.

Stevolende, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:34 (seven years ago) link

until all the Russia stuff came out I was pretty sure that was the reason

frogbs, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:40 (seven years ago) link

guys we've gone a whole 24 hours w out a major leak, I'm getting nervous. or maybe bored.

Οὖτις, Friday, 3 March 2017 22:45 (seven years ago) link

what's the point? why should the RNC Platform bother with anything beyond appeasing Putin?

nothing to see here :)

last year (march, 2016), the language comrade combover himself advocated for, five, six months before the Republican Convention. no biggie!

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 3 March 2017 22:55 (seven years ago) link

The administration is a little shook from the last two days, if they start feeling themselves again something will drop xxp

* A U.S. civilian was personally awarded by Vladimir Putin the medal of honor "Friend of Russia."

* That same U.S. civilian was so honored while negotiating a multi-billion-dollar oil deal with Russia.

* That same U.S. civilian was a CEO of Exxon.

* That same U.S. civilian with zero diplomat or government experience is now Secretary of State, the boss in charge of all our international diplomatic relations.

* Hours after inauguration, the President erased laws that banned unreported deals by U.S. citizens with other governments.

Does anyone else find this bizarre and under-discussed?

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 3 March 2017 23:05 (seven years ago) link

xpost He's currently busy with his charm offensive, talking quieter and more calmly, hanging with historic black colleges, going to elementary schools to pretend to cares about kids. He's trying to stick to the post-speech script despite everything going off-script. But his Russia tweet stuff shows it is bothering him and he can't help it.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 23:07 (seven years ago) link

Just like Nixon, he's taping everything.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 March 2017 23:24 (seven years ago) link

what does he have against tie clips, can his tiny hands not handle them or something

Οὖτις, Friday, 3 March 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link

Having seen Richard Painter on a couple of shows over the last couple of days has he got something wrong with his face. Like a stroke at some point or something, seems to not fully inhabit his face and talk out of the side of his mouth and stuff.

Nixon has pointed this out.

Maddow's show today was pretty good for anyone worried that the Russia stuff was gonna run out of steam

turns out the Russian dude who inexplicably paid Trump $100m for a $40m property had been following him around on campaign stops

frogbs, Saturday, 4 March 2017 04:04 (seven years ago) link

This is a reasonably good breakdown of the mansion strong:

http://www.politico.eu/article/donad-trump-and-the-oligarch-russia-dmitry-rybolovlev-house-vladimir-putin-us-presidential-election-america-2016/

Rybolovlev also bought NYC's most expensive apartment for his daughter, turning a $47m profit for the owner, Sandy Weill, a major Clinton donor.

He also sold an $88m Gaugun for $22m, this week - part of a $2bn art collection that he probably overpaid at least 25% for. Some of this was acquired via a front company to hide the real owner. A trust acting on behalf that of his daughter bought 66% of AS Monaco, invested €150m, overpaying for most, in new players and seems to have mostly lost interest in spending huge amount of money over the last few years (although the team is doing well with young players).

The general pattern looks like him being easily parted from his money in questionable deals but the underlying reason is almost certainly a scramble to divest himself of as much cash as possible ahead of a divorce in which his wife was initially awarded £4.5bn. It is probably worth looking in to whether the price advertised matches the actual price paid, or whether there were any kickbacks, but the 'Russia plot' angle is a dead end - he is not thought to be well liked in Russia or part of any inner circle.

I just went halfway down a rabbit hole trying to figure out this FISA warrant / "wiretapped Trump Tower" stuff, read an entire Andrew McCarthy piece, and was about to check out Heat Street before I was like NOPE DONT CARE

El Tomboto, Saturday, 4 March 2017 13:32 (seven years ago) link

Trump really thinks he got something good with this one. Going hard after Obama. This'll end well.

Oh and Tillerson's State Department buried their own annual human rights report. Nothing like eroding away the diplomatic corps

El Tomboto, Saturday, 4 March 2017 13:42 (seven years ago) link

Alfred: yes, but they say I have to take this serum every day for the rest of my life.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 4 March 2017 13:43 (seven years ago) link

I had wondered if this was Turnip responding to actual intelligence he'd received in his role as president or whether, as per usual, he was just parroting shit from his 'news' sources. Little of both? Who knows. But christ, yeah, singling out Obama seems particularly stupid for a number of reasons. Buuuuut that's our Turnip!

The Flautist of Flatus (Old Lunch), Saturday, 4 March 2017 13:45 (seven years ago) link

Whoa he just said "this is Nixon/Watergate" hope he's right!

I think Trump's only recourse is to arrest, prosecute and jail Obama along with Clinton, at least until he discovers what they did wrong.

Favorite online comment this morning:

Suddenly, early in the spring, an alarming thing was discovered. Snowball was secretly frequenting the farm by night! The animals were so disturbed that they could hardly sleep in their stalls. Every night, it was said, he came creeping in under cover of darkness and performed all kinds of mischief. He stole the corn, he upset the milk-pails, he broke the eggs, he trampled the seedbeds, he gnawed the bark off the fruit trees. Whenever anything went wrong it became usual to attribute it to Snowball. If a window was broken or a drain was blocked up, someone was certain to say that Snowball had come in the night and done it, and when the key of the store-shed was lost, the whole farm was convinced that Snowball had thrown it down the well. Curiously enough, they went on believing this even after the mislaid key was found under a sack of meal.

Οὖτις, Saturday, 4 March 2017 15:05 (seven years ago) link

I can't believe anyone was once worried about him tweeting too much. I want him to tweet more!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 4 March 2017 15:28 (seven years ago) link

big question here is whether this is purely a baseless accusation pulled from alt-right media or if there are actual transcripts about to drop containing details of Trump and team's communications with Russia and Trump is trying to get out in front of it

Just out: The same Russian Ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times last year alone.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 4 March 2017 15:41 (seven years ago) link

i don't think it's fair that the white house should have been meeting with envoys of foreign governments, if it's not okay the trump campaign met with them. why is everyone so unfair to poor donald? where's the birth certificate?
